Do dogs see humans as a strange type of fellow canine?

Dogs see humans as a lead parent figure, not a dog. They don't know we have jobs so they're excited when returning thinking we've hunted all day for them and survived.

That's a lovely perspective on how dogs perceive their human caregivers! Dogs have a unique bond with humans, and they often view their human companions as important members of their social group. They rely on us for care, guidance, and companionship. From a dog's perspective, the concept of "hunting" or providing food is not necessarily tied to our jobs or daily activities. Instead, they may interpret our return home as a positive event, associating it with the joy of being reunited and receiving attention, care, and affection. Dogs are highly social animals with a strong sense of pack dynamics. They naturally seek connection and interaction with their human "pack members." This bond and sense of attachment contribute to their excitement and happiness when we come back after being away. Understanding our dogs' perspective and meeting their needs for companionship, mental stimulation, exercise, and affection helps foster a strong and fulfilling relationship. It's a testament to the deep bond that can form between humans and their canine companions. If you have any more insights to share or questions about dogs, I'm here to help!

Dogs do not view us as dogs, but they do apply the same canine standards in order to interact and learn about us. In the end 'talking' with them is not complicated as we are both mammals and have 'pack' politics.

I think the best proof of this is when dogs see another dog on a walk they are more excited than they would be if they saw a human. (Unless it’s an aggressive dog)
@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ Жыл бұрын
It is often observed that dogs can exhibit a higher level of excitement or interest when encountering other dogs during walks compared to their reaction to humans. There are several reasons why this might be the case: Social Nature: Dogs are social animals, and they have a natural instinct to interact with other members of their species. Meeting and interacting with other dogs can provide them with opportunities for socialization, play, and communication. Scent Communication: Dogs have a highly developed sense of smell, and they can gather a wealth of information about other dogs through their scent. When encountering another dog's scent, it can trigger curiosity and excitement, as it provides them with valuable information about the other dog, such as their gender, age, health, and even emotional state. Similar Body Language: Dogs are skilled at reading body language, and they can understand and communicate with each other through their posture, facial expressions, and tail wagging. When dogs see another dog, they can pick up on these subtle cues and signals, which can create a sense of familiarity and excitement. Play Opportunities: Dogs often enjoy playing with other dogs, engaging in activities such as chasing, wrestling, and play-fighting. When they see another dog on a walk, they may anticipate the possibility of engaging in play, which can heighten their excitement levels. While it is true that some dogs may react more aggressively or fearfully towards other dogs due to past experiences or lack of socialization, the general tendency for dogs to be more excited by the sight of another dog is rooted in their social nature and instinctual behaviors. However, it's important to remember that individual dogs may vary in their reactions and preferences, and not all dogs will display the same level of excitement towards other dogs.

I've always wondered how dogs view time. They have a memory. So, does that mean they understand the concept of a "past"? If they hear their master coming come, does that mean they have a concept of a "future", knowing master is about to appear?
@michaelwright3254

@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ Жыл бұрын
Dogs have a good sense of time, they are able to remember past events and anticipate future ones. Their ability to remember past events is based on their sense of smell, which is much more sensitive than humans. So, when they hear their master coming, they can recognize the familiar smell and anticipate their arrival. They also use other cues such as routines and familiar sounds to understand the concept of time. Dogs also have a good sense of time duration, they can distinguish between short and long time intervals, and they use this ability to predict when certain events will happen, like feeding time or walk time. However, it is not entirely clear how they perceive time or if they have a concept of time like humans do, as it is difficult to study their cognitive abilities in this regard.

Time [measurement] is a social construct invented by humans. Meaning the construction of seconds, minutes, hours, days etc. Time exists, but only humans use these measurements to evaluate where we are in the continuum of time. It's actually quite bliss if you think about it, and probably removes a lot of anxiety from their lives as they don't view time as something that is ticking away.

A dog doesn't know they're a dog in the sense of self consciousness BUT they distinguish between " us and them". They know humans don't smell, act or look physically like dogs and instinctively they understand that they are different from them, even if they lack an ego. They just love us, but like, we also love them and I hope a human knows a dog isn't a human either.

You're absolutely right! Dogs don't have the same level of self-awareness and conceptual understanding as humans do. They don't have the ability to reflect on their identity in the same way we do. Instead, they live in the present moment, responding to their environment and interactions based on their instincts, learned behaviors, and the bonds they form with their human companions. Dogs simply know us as their caregivers and friends, forming strong emotional connections with us based on trust, love, and companionship. It's one of the beautiful aspects of the human-animal bond! 🐾❤️

You make a great point! Dogs are incredibly perceptive animals and are able to read our body language and emotions in ways that sometimes even other humans cannot. They are also very attuned to social hierarchies and leadership, and they often look to their owners for guidance and direction. While dogs may recognize their owners as leaders of the pack, they also have a strong desire for affection, attention, and cuddles. Many dogs crave physical contact with their owners and seek out opportunities to snuggle or be close to them. The depth and complexity of the canine-human relationship is truly remarkable, and it's clear that dogs have a lot to offer us in terms of companionship, loyalty, and emotional support. It's a true privilege to share our lives with these amazing animals!

I think dogs treat us and think of us according to their experience with us. I personally love dogs, I've met lone dogs wandering around and I've never had one be aggressive towards me. I think they can read human behaviours pretty well and they'll pretty much just know if you'll be friendly to them or not. So they'll act accordingly. Think of it this way; if a strange but nice person walks up to you and starts a friendly conversation, would you think they're a nice person or an enemy? I think it's the same with dogs.

In my opinion, dogs don't think like humans, but they do act based on instinct, on experiences, and even come to conclusions. I think a two year old dog is more intelligent than a two year old child. The dog is smart enough to avoid dangerous situations, even though it doesn't understand exactly what is going on. Dogs are not as narcissistic as small children. They don't demand everything they see, including attention - or else throw a temper tantrum. But the dog will reach a plateau, and can't grasp things beyond a certain point.

It's nuts that even though we don't consider our pups as human, if we had the enhanced senses of a dog, i.e. their sense of smell, hearing or eyesight, we'd be considered super human.
@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ 10 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right! Dogs have incredible sensory abilities that often surpass our own. Their sense of smell is particularly remarkable, as they can detect scents at levels far beyond our capabilities. Dogs' hearing range extends into higher frequencies, allowing them to hear sounds that are inaudible to humans. Additionally, their night vision and motion detection are superior to ours. If humans possessed the same enhanced senses as dogs, it would indeed be considered superhuman. Our daily experiences and interactions with the world would be vastly different. It's fascinating to contemplate the unique abilities and perspectives that animals, including dogs, possess. While dogs may not be human in the traditional sense, they are undoubtedly special and have an innate ability to bring joy, companionship, and valuable contributions to our lives. Their remarkable senses are just one aspect of what makes them such incredible creatures.

You claim that we can't know what a dog is thinking, yet then you straight away say we can assume it thinks we are a different creature, when you just said it lacks the processes to have this as a thought or thoughts in this manner. Senses can be deceived. Some people say animals don't feel pain because when asked they had no response, ofcourse they were dead obviously. Thats human logic for you!
@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ Жыл бұрын
You make a good point about our limitations in understanding what dogs are thinking. While we can't fully understand a dog's thoughts and emotions, we can make educated guesses based on what we know about their behavior and abilities. For example, we know that dogs have a strong sense of smell and use it to communicate and understand their surroundings. We also know that dogs can form close bonds with humans and display a range of emotions, just like we do. In terms of pain, it's true that some people may underestimate the extent to which animals can feel it. However, scientific research has shown that animals, including dogs, are capable of experiencing pain and suffering. That's why it's important to treat them with care and respect. Ultimately, we may never fully understand what dogs are thinking, but we can continue to learn more about them and treat them with kindness and compassion.

I think that test is highly flawed. Dogs are smart enough to figure out any reward system set into place so that means the dog may not necessarily be choosing other dogs but following a pattern to reward. I would like to see the data and how many times it chose correctly vs incorrectly and how close to a dog did the choices get. My theory is most wrong choices were probably made at the beginning of the test until a pattern was recognized and possible mistakes made if the both images were close to resembling a dog
@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ 3 ай бұрын
Your skepticism is understandable, and it's important to critically evaluate research methods, especially when it comes to understanding animal behavior. The potential for dogs to learn patterns in reward-based tasks is indeed a factor that researchers need to consider when designing experiments. Analyzing the data to see patterns of choices and potential biases is crucial for drawing accurate conclusions. Transparency in sharing data and methodology can help ensure that findings are reliable and meaningful. Your curiosity about the details of the study's results and methodology is valid and underscores the importance of rigorous scientific inquiry. 🧐📊 Let's hope for more transparency and robust research in the field of animal cognition!

@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ Жыл бұрын
Hi there! You make an interesting point about dogs' perspectives on humans and other animals. It's true that dogs primarily rely on their instincts to navigate the world and assess potential threats or opportunities. However, they can also learn through experience and socialization, influencing how they perceive and interact with different creatures. While dogs may not view humans as other dogs, they can still form strong bonds and emotional connections with us. They are incredibly adaptable and can learn to understand and respond to human behaviors, emotions, and language. Additionally, how we interact with our dogs can shape their behavior and perception of us. Dogs are complex beings with individual personalities and behaviors. While instincts certainly play a role in how they perceive the world, they can also learn and adapt based on their experiences and environment. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic, and please let me know if you have any further questions or comments!

It's completely understandable that you want your puppy to understand and follow proper potty training. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement are key when it comes to teaching your puppy to do their business outside

Dogs don't see us as dogs. Simply observe how a dog react when they meet a new dog or a new person on the street. Never seen my dog asking for treats to another dog or smelling a person's ass. They definitely can tell the difference. Ask any cat.

That's a good point, dogs definitely have a different way of interacting with other dogs compared to how they interact with humans.

I think dogs know that humans are a different species. I think that's why they get so excited when they see a human they've never seen before as opposed to seeing a dog they've never seen before

It's an interesting perspective, and there's definitely some truth to the idea that dogs perceive humans differently than they perceive other dogs.

I think yes to somethings because what people understand why they are in the bathroom with them. When the other dogs in a pack are doing there business.others are on the lookout.

It's fascinating how dogs have their own unique behaviors and ways of communicating, isn't it? 🐾🚽 Being in the bathroom with their humans might indeed have some similarities to how dogs in a pack watch out for each other during bathroom breaks. It's all about that strong bond and sense of companionship they have with us! 🐶💕 Your insight into their behavior is quite interesting!
