I feel like when i graduate (i barely started studying my first semester in environmental science) i would like to go work traveling but later on in life would like to settle down and not travel as much

As someone who works as an environmental scientist at a global company in the U.S., my field excursions usually don't last longer than a week. I think the longest I've been in the field is 2 weeks. My field to office ratio is about 30/70, if anyone is curious. The company that we are consulting to pays for just about everything, like Kristina said. The only thing that various is food, which as Kristina said, is on a "per diem" which the going rate in the U.S. varies but is usually $55 dollars per day. Which if you don't use the whole $55, that goes in your pocket tax free. Not saying skimp by, but it can be nice. Everything else (hotel, airfare, rental car/truck, gas) is all paid for by the company we are consulting to. This has just been my experience.

That's super useful to get your perspective! That's basically my experience too, except for length of time in the field because in Canada consulting companies often work in remote far north locations so sometimes it makes more sense to be out for longer and have longer shifts

I have always wanted to follow my passion, the study of ecossystems and following something in the field of environmental biology and conservation. Im turning 18 and about to head to university and super nervous because everyone tells me that its a dying field and i will be left jobless for thr rest of my life anyone got advice?

With climate change disasters looming I hardly think helping the planet is a dying field but quite the opposite! One piece of advice though - work your butt off to graduate with a stellar resume with tons of internships and you'll be in a good place for applying to entry level jobs after school. You might have to do a few years of entry level seasonal work to get ahead, so try to keep student loans minimal and your lifestyle simple so you can take the lower paid positions for the first few years. If you want to do a master's degree first, grades and professor recommendations are really important as well. After the first few years of experience, finding a good job will be a lot easier. If it's your passion, you can do it!

It's NOT a dying field, environmental science is actually growing at a very high rate. Dying fields would be like petroleum engineering and similar fields.

I would say this is hardly the case. Environmental regulations are only going to increase as climate change exacerbates our finite resources; an increase in regulations is a GOOD thing, regardless of what politicians want to tell you. With more regulations= more jobs in environmental science. This can be a fulfilling job, I would stick with it and go to school for ecology and environmental science.

What a nice cat you have there! I’m in the process of applying for some entry level positions in environmental consulting, how often does the company tell you to travel by your own means to the contract location?

Pretty common for consulting to have to get to the contract location yourself, or at least the city that is posted on the job posting if it's remote enough you won't be able to arrange your own travel easily. Usually it will say in the position posting otherwise. Just my experience!

Quick question! Do you ever personally use Organic Chemistry in your career? If so how important is it? It is really not my thing so it is difficult for me to focus on the subject, whereas in my Ecology classes I love what I am learning and find it easy to retain the knowledge! I guess one other corresponding question would be: what seems to be the most important topics of o chem that you use? Thanks!!!

Hey lovely video.. Is there a job that can take you to inspect Or visit any natural preserves of the world. Like can an ecologist do that?

Ecologists often work in nature reserves, rarely is the job just visiting but it's often detailed research and structured environmental studies with a purpose. :) While there are some jobs where you jump around to multiple regions in the world with the same company, it's pretty rare - typically you'd be studying a specific area for a specific reason and using set survey protocols based on your organization. If you want to hop around to different regions, contract work, international NGOs or consulting companies with an international presence might be up your alley! It's good to keep in mind too that the more "glamorous" the job is the more competition you have!

Also I actually had this thing in mind.. Like I had always wanted to do something in the field of ecology along with my mainstream course of neuroscience. Like I wud love to once in a year at least for sometime do somthng in this field and contribute to it.. So any advices that u can give?

The chances of you answering this is about 1/1,0000, but here goes nothing. I'm a sophomore in a small-town high school. I'm really uncertain about what I want to do in my future. I know I'm going to ramble a bit, but hear me out. I've been watching your videos (amazing by the way!), and I was looking for advice. I don't know of anyone around me who wants the same career choices as me. I don't know what I want to major in either, but I would love to work with wildlife. I'd like to do as much fieldwork as possible, but I'd still like a bit of commitment time for my home life. I'm not really picky about what I do in the future, but I want to give myself the best chances of succeeding with the limited amount of jobs available. Any advice?

Hi I’m not the girl in the video but even I want to do environmental work but I live an more urban place which is London. If you live in a small town or rural area I wouldn’t advise it because the demand won’t be there as much as an urban area because there isn’t as much pollution. I suggest if you still want to work in the environment do something more in demand in your area like water or environmental policy and law in my opinion :)

I wouldn't say it's common, no. I'm not sure how that would work unless kids weren't in school and spouses didn't work and you were staying at a hotel instead of a field camp (non-workers aren't usually allowed at field camps)

Yea there are some people that go that route! If you check out seasonal jobs, honestly living in a van is an ideal situation and you can just drive to where the work is

Yes, you can..Many of the environmental sciences involve modeling of the natural world, which require physics. For example, we may model a plume of pollution as it moves downwind, or the hydraulics of water in a river in order to estimate erosion...we are talking about environmental sciences (plural), which is inclusive of many applied scientific specialties, and the deeper you go into them, very often the further you get into chemistry and physics.
