When you do two runs down a trail, don't be surprised that your second run is faster. While I like testing this idea, a real test with a bigger sample size is needed to come to any sort of real conclusion.

Hi Phil, We'd already done a number of runs to film, shoot and ride. The times were taken after 5 runs then the 6th on the tracks... I don't generally ride flat pedals and this was my first time in 6 months so I think in some sense and very interestingly the results do speak for themselves. We've got some more ideas on testing them both so watch this space! Surprised that on the climb there was nothing in it! Cheers, Scott

Coming from BMX street where pure bike control is valued above anything. I can say that riding flats will increase bike control exponentially. A lot of BMX street riders use plastic pedals without pins and some how manage to stay on the bike through massive impacts with no suspension. When you learn to really feel the bike and anticipate it's movements you make adjustments without thinking about it and you can ride with awkward foot position at times. If you are always locked into the same position without variation it can limit the amount of control you have in any given situation.

Ahh sweet redemption! I used to race XC and DH with flats back in the nineties when clipless pedals reigned supreme and no one even considered flats an option, the big debate back then was clipped vs clipless. People would look at me like I had lost my mind when I would show up on my flats wearing Vans for a race, yet I would regularly podium. The thing is as you get used to riding flats you get really good at keeping you feet glued to them and even though if you're used to clipless pedals you can get your foot out pretty quick for a dab, on flats you can dab and have your foot back on the pedal in a split-second. It's also a myth that you can't pull up on your back foot with flats, maybe not quite as efficiently as clipless but you totally can.
@viarix06
@viarix06 8 жыл бұрын
As a bike guide who regularly teaches beginners, I swear by flats. Obviously for beginners but for myself as well, the idea that you and the bike are two different things working together gets lost when riding clips. Having your feet locked in a position where you can't rotate their position makes the bike so much less maneuverable when leaning the bike into corners. Obviously they are more efficient when climbing but with the right pedal-shoe combo I can get just as much upwards pull out of my flats
@tweed0929

Exactly what I'm experienced myself... on the road bike (surprise). I can't control the bike the way I like for shit with clips, because I'm used to let the bike do the job 50% of time. I'm spinning the pedals, setting the direction by turning the bars or leaning and controling the line by using the centre of gravity. Everything else does my bike. As two different physical objects, we work together in synergy. Those little movements on flats when the leg seeks for better position at this given sector of the road are priceless. When I'm clipped in, the steering becomes a pain in the ass.

I agree, the amount of injuries I've heard about due to lipless is insane, I tried them for about 4 months and got used to them but never felt safe at junctions with cars or steep sections next to drop offs. Flats just give me more confidence in all scenarios and I feel I wont break my hip or collarbone if I come off like many people do with clipless.

@@mysterymete Sometimes you can't UN-forget you're riding clipped in... which causes you to ride like a timid granny because you know if you fuck up you are going to be the meat in a sandwich between a rock garden on bottom and a 30 pound bike on top. That said, I do ride clipped in a lot, but not on really technical stuff. Flat/clip combination pedals are a pretty decent alternative to be able to ride either way without swapping pedals. Of course, they can also be a pain in the ass at times as well.

But many people win competitions without clipless so I say why even bother doing clipless. Its just a gimmick to be honest to make you buy the shoes and pedals. Slightly more efficient maybe but the amount of people that hurt themselves with clipless outweighs the efficiency for me to tell people they are good. In road cycling yes but even then the deaths and injuries caused by clipless is insane.

Then at the end you say does this mean I'll be switching to flats? "Well no, clips are just a little more efficient". It's like you don't believe your own test. Just say that you prefer clipping in! GBN did a similar test on the treadmill as you guys with same results! I don't care what anyone rides but myself and I'm not saying anyone that likes clips should switch to flats. But stop proving one thing only to finish the test with your personal opinion that clips are still faster.

It makes sense that clips would be slightly more efficient because they allow you to pull the pedal back up, so unlike a flat you are not only pushing down and you are able to utilize all of the muscles in your legs. But to be quite honest, why worry about it, just ride whatever is comfortable.

I think I saw in some article that one does not actually ever pull on the pedals, even if clipped in. I would guess the advantage comes from less effort staying on the pedals and also the ability to move the bike around easier.

I've used both kinds of pedals a lot. They are both fantastic in their own ways. One thing I don't like about clip-ins is the mechanical feel. Our knees and ankles aren't perfectly square bending, and I've noticed joint fatigue with clip-in pedals.

Whichever you master, makes you comfortable and confident will be quicker imo. I personally used clips in the 90s and that was good. Then SPD was a game changer to me in the 2000s. Now I am back riding after 10+ years again and some people said flats are the “new” cool 🤷‍♂️ To me it is still hard to use flats, I just simply not comfortable with it. If I spend the same amount of time on both, I’ll probably be still quicker on SPD only because that feels more comfortable. Personal preference imo, it is good to ride both and see which work better for You. But hey, I am not a pro rider 🙂

Of course whatever you find most comfortable is best. On long climbs clips are awesome, being able to get smooth pedal rotation by using your upstroke makes climbs much faster- for me that is

I raced on clips for bmx for about 15 years, clips on the road and flats for mountain biking. I just have a lot more fun on flats than clips on the mountain. But it all comes down to what you’re comfortable with and how you want to ride.

clipless is more efficient, but your seat would be down for a downhill, so pedaling efficency is thrown out the window at that point, I feel thats what made the difference

A more interesting variation could be Shimano SPD clipless (less float) vs. "Crank Bros." style pedals, which can be highly variable from multi-sided (4 or 2). As we know the former is favoured by Epic racers, XC racers (XT/XTR pedal users) vs. More downhill oriented riders (crank). Overall for me, clipless (SPD or Crank) is perceptively better for maintaining a "consistent" power delivery around the whole revolution of the crank, great to avoid the "stamping" up hills tendency that is easy to get into with flats. There is always a learning curve, but if you love getting into that smooth flow on trails or all day riding, ask a friend to borrow their spare shoes and pedals for a few weeks and learn what it's like to not ever want to put a foot down again.

I ride a hardtail and the trails here where I live are super rooty. I am not good by any standard, which is why I am obviously way more comfortable and confident with flat pedals. But from time to time I like to throw on my classic SPD clip pedals, just cause without the rear suspension, I am constantly adjusting my foot position, cause even with really long and sharp studs on my pedals, my feet just get vibrated out of position.

what have we learnt? that you're faster on your second run than your first! this test needs to be done on two stages with one pedal going first on one stage and the other going first on the next. The time on the climb is interesting but it could just be down to using the same technique for both pedals and not taking advantage of the clips..... Despite all the above.... Flats for the win in my book! :P

I am not even close to being pro but I use clips for certain trials that are less technical with more climbs and easy downhills and flats on the more technical trails. I like being able to take my foot off the pedal quickly with flats but the clips for me are quicker on climbs. My local trails are all up and down and I spend more time going uphill than down. I thinks its all what you're the most comfortable with

You don't see Motocross or BMX riders clipping their feet to bike. I think it's pretty simple with your feet clipped to pedals it limits your ability to shift your center of gravity which is what you're doing when you throw your leg out. So the tighter the terrain the greater the advantage to flats over clips. If you think about it clips were invented for road bikes who's courses are paved with no jumps or tight turns. Being securely locked on to the pedal is a good thing on a road bike.

i would say that clips are more for straight runs because in curves u need to unclip and if the trail has many, close to eachother curves you need to stay unclipped so flats are better for difficult trails, bmx, and street biking but its all to what you like anyways

Track familiarity has to come into play. The only way to properly test that would be to have another individual ride with flats first, followed by clips. Then compare the two differences. One users experience doesn't mean anything.
