Do fuel system cleaners work? BG 44K Chevron Techron Seafoam Berrymans Gasoline Lucas Fuel System Cleaner go head to head in the battle of the fuel system cleaners.
20 KZfaq Repair channels to watch in 2020: blog.feedspot.com/auto_repair...
Professional mechanics and do-it-yourselfers everywhere rely on this product every day. Sea Foam Motor Treatment dissolves and cleans fuel and oil residues and deposits, stabilizes fuel, controls moisture, and lubricates upper cylinders. Safe and effective when added to gasoline and diesel fuel and oil crankcases - Just pour it in!
Berryman's B-12 Quickly disperses moisture and dissolves gum, varnish, and other fuel residues from the entire fuel system, fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel injectors, valves, rings and pistons with H.E.S.T. Regular use ensures higher compression, fewer repairs, lower operating costs, and increased spark plug and injector life. Available in both consumer and commercial sizes. Catalytic converter and oxygen sensor-safe.
HEST - “High Energy Solvent Technology,” a Berryman exclusive, incorporates the use of strong solvents, as opposed to weak carriers and diluents such as mineral spirits or kerosene. As a “tip of the cap” to our HEST technology, positive feedback regarding any of our products is affectionately referred to as a HESTimonial.
Lucas Deep Clean is blended with an exclusive Lucas additive package and specific carrier fluid that contains no diesel fuel, kerosene or anything else that can be harmful or useless to an engine. It also reduces NOx emissions, eliminates the need for higher octane fuel and deep cleans the entire fuel system and combustion chamber.
Filling up with a Techron fuel is always an upgrade, because our research and development never stops. At the Richmond Technology Center, our team of chemists and engineers test and retest Techron's effectiveness in all kinds of engine and vehicle conditions-to bring you results that are far from standard.
If you regularly use a high-quality gasoline such as Chevron, Texaco and Caltex, you probably don't need Techron Concentrate Plus. However, should you occasionally fill up with lower quality gasoline, you may need Techron Concentrate Plus to help clean up deposits that can build up over time. In addition, if you have an engine that is sensitive to deposit formation, or if your vehicle is regularly used under severe conditions, you may also benefit from using Techron Concentrate Plus.

I've always used Berryman's B-12 over the past 50 years because it works and is very affordable when purchased in 1 gallon cans. I did use Techron Concentrate once to see if would free-up my sticky fuel level sender. It did loosen up enough of the crud to get it working much better with the detergents in top tier gas finishing the job.

I keep all of my lawn equipment running like a top by pouring a little 44K in my gasoline tanks each Spring.. My mower is 26 years old and never had any carb work.. I also use 44K in my vehicles.. GREAT STUFF but the price seems to go up regularly..

I've been using the Techron for the last 25 years and trusted this formula since Chevron began putting this in their Fuels. I now add 1-2 small drops for each fillup in my Lawn Tractor. Last week I decided to replace my Spark Plug in my Tractor and it was just as clean as a new plug, worn out but clean! I also add one container in each of my Jeeps after the third fillup. MPG inproved by 2-3 gallons. Power also inproved. I do know Chevron works best during combustion!

Sometimes chemical reactions take activation energy to proceed, so just because a cleaner is great at room temperature doesnt mean its better than a cleaner that did less so at room temp for this test. A different cleaner at the higher temperature may outperform others during actual warmed conditions. The best way to test these is conduct the experiments in an electric heating oven with lots of fire safety, fume evacuation...etc. The product that works best at room temperature may break down at high heat or not react at all or other results as experiments will only be able to show. Also, a product that works at 'room' temperature might perform better in northen climates or colder regions as one may see the thermostat at normal temperature, but the top of the engine where the cold air adjacent to the valves are might cool down to room temperature quick and thus the 'room temp cleaner' would be a better product.

This is a great test! Fuel lines are not the same as gloves, B12 will not hurt them. Mixing any of these cleaners with fuel only dilutes them. Running it through the injectors under pressure only gives the diluted cleaner less time to work. And for the guy that said no one uses the cleaner straight, I say why not ? I pulled my injectors and filled them up with B12. It works! Also had some injectors that had sat for years with fuel in them and were completely clogged solid. I was able to dissolve that and get them to flow like new.

I did my own personal studies with different products over the years. So far Tech Ron is the best monthly use and BG44k I use every six months as a booster. Nothing truly cleans first time around but with monthly usage, you see the results. Techron and BG44k in a RAM with over 200,000 miles is my pick.

Techron is what Chevron puts in its gasolines. I would use Techron before messing with Berrymans. Berrymans has acetone in it and that’s the chemical they put in fingernail polish. It’s very strong. I believe Techron is the best stuff to use. Top Tier gasolines won’t hurt either.

@Steve Silvas see the Project Farm KZfaq videos for maintenance tests. He comes up with better test methods. I use the Berryman B-12 Chemtool, and he got good results for Restore in the engine oil for old worn out lawnmower engines. Fuel system gaskets are made to be more resistant to fuel and fuel cleaners, especially newer vehicles made to run 10 percent ethanol gasoline. For winter storage I use Startron from the Walmart boat section, it seems to work a little better than the Seafoam I used to use for this. The Berryman B-12 Chemtool has more carbon dissolved in the liquid in the jar, instead of still on the valve.

Why does nobody ever test how they clean FUEL INJECTORS. Im sure most people care more about that than valves.....
@kamendimitrov3884
@kamendimitrov3884 4 жыл бұрын
Most people are wrong... If you're with your right mind, you WOULD care MORE about valves... Any injection cleaner does the job... Very few, if any valve cleaners do anything whatsoever... And once you get carbon buildup on your intake valves, the rest is a landslide... All the way up to rebuilding your engine... To present day, on DIE only walnut blasting sorts the carbon buildup issues in a satisfactory manner. The rest is either make believe or postponing the inevitable...

@bundysgarage 4 жыл бұрын
Your talking about gasoline direct injection with walnut cleaning. No fuel additive in the world will clean that. It’s a design flaw caused by a lot of the manufacturers. Fuel is no longer sprayed across the top of the valve. It is injected right into the cylinder now. Toyota is the only only one that has 2 fuel injectors per cylinder. One sprays on top of the valve to help combat carbon deposits and then the other injector is sprayed right into the combustion chamber. Other manufactures are catching on now but the first few years of the GDI engines were piss poor.

@@bundysgarage Been rebuilding my Audi's 2.0T FSI... and at 113k it had over a quarter-inch thick chunky carbon on the exhaust side, which reduced the holed from about an inch in diameter to a half inch, and about an 8th inch thick on the intake side because of the PVC and EGR systems... Direct injection is complete crap. Just redid the exhaust manifold and intake gaskets on my Suburban, and saw less than 1/4 the total carbon buildup at 240k miles... it's basically just a surface scale, in a 5.3 liter. Yeah, they need to stop designing engines to fail...

The additives are designed to react with the gasoline. The Berrymens B12 would be diluted in the gasoline and probably not eat your glove. Also they may need heat to help get their cleaning mojo going. If they're fuel injection cleaners, they will work better under pressure. But it was a entertaining video. Well produced. I would have to agree on the limitations of this test. These are not mixed and diluted with fuel and heat is definitely an issue since they can change with heat. With this test you could have had a pure water control jar and it would have removed the carbon, but nobody is going to put a can of water in their gas tank.

First time I was made aware of Berryman B12 was like in 1974. I had just filled up with gas at like a Fast Gas place, cause it was much cheaper. Well onway home after a bit, I was going up hill, and my 1972 350 engine started running real rough, shaking the car (a 1972 Monte Carlo) and I looked in rear view mirror and frigging smoke (was night so don't know the color of smoke) was all behind my car. Freaked me out..... then got past hill and I don't recall more smoke, but the engine continued running rough allway home. I went in and told my dad about it, and said I got bad gas... apparently had water in it. He said I needed to get some B12 and put in it. So I did, let it sit overnight, next day got in car, and it was running just fine then... so never went back to Fast Gas, only used name brand gas in car. Never had that kind of issue since. But I still use B12 in the '72's I drive to the day. Have never owned any other kind of car than a 1st Gen Monte Carlo... Way more economical to drive... Ok, I do not get 42 miles to the gallon... but what your paying for a new car, hell... that would buy a lot of gas, roflol. Plus... your "good car" you drive.... Sure would like to see that driven everyday for 50 years and see what kind of shape that yellow headlight car would be in right now!!

I thought this was a great idea to be able to measure out the B12. By the next morning when I went into the garage that jug was laying in the floor. It had fallen off the shelf. Why did it fall off the shelf ?? Because the MMO jug was now the consistency of a water balloon lol. The B12 overnight had softened the plastic MMO bottle to where it had zero rigidity left. i think the berrymans works better .. i had a car that had hesitatation with the acceleration and i used one bottle on a tank ful and it made a noticeable difference in performance and better gas mileage .. i just wonder if its ok to use it in a regular basis or not .. your thoughts ?

Good video work, the effort is clear. But the reason those valves are essentially spotless to begin with is the gas contains a PEA detergent designed to work at the extreme temperatures and pressures of an internal combustion engine. You can't clean up what is already clean, and you can't replicate an internal combustion engine test in a jar....well...you could.... but it is better known as a Molotov cocktail.

I've been using Marine outboard two cycle TCW3 oil for almost two years. It works like Lucas fuel conditioner and MMO. Google. Been Testing Oil LS1 GTO. It has the write up on testing and results. Its 1 oz oil per 5 gallons of gas. Works great try a few tanks.

Berryman's has acetone and toluene. Those are very strong dissolvers of softer plastics and rubber like gloves. Good for fuel systems diluted with gasoline.

This is a better test, seems like they all work , other people test , keep saying they don't work as advertised but my personal option , you run a car for hundreds of miles with build up and expecting it to be clean with just one try, is expecting too much ,

Roger Chien You won't notice any change if your engine isn't filthy to begin with. Even then, that's assuming it gets in the way of its running. My old Toyota runs about the same after as before, but now she doesn't misfire if I put my foot down in lean burn mode (one of those quirky 7A-FEs :D)

What would be the best test is to take heads off and show the valves first. Then put back together use the treatment and see which treatment works in an actual running engine..

be careful with making assumptions about the results where heat would cause better cleaning performance... remember that during combustion these products produce their own oxides but you are right that the operating temperature activates the product. I subbed and enjoyed the video. Thanks for doing this test. Anything with petroleum in it will eat a latex glove.

So isn't the combustion itself also a part of the cleaning? In terms of the additives will/would react during the heat and pressure?

BG 44K is VERY GOOD. However, the fuel additives designed to release dissolved hydrogen gas are the best !! The hydrogen gas ignites and creates a high combustion temperature which knocks off the carbon deposits which condensed at lower engine temperatures.

@bfg9000d1
@bfg9000d1 3 жыл бұрын
Simple, only use it on a long trip. So you can run the stuff fast through your fuel system. This will also give you the best results. I have never had fuel system issues when using it in this matter. If you can't take a long trip add it to half a tank of gas and run up and down the high way till the gas light comes on. B12 chemtool will clean your system. If your really concern about the fuel system run a small bottle of marvel mystery oil through afterwards. Years ago. They use to sell a dip can of b-12 for mechanics to do overnight soaking of parts. It was miracle stuff for mechanics back in the day. If a mechanic could not find the part readily available and the customer needed the car back soon. They would throw the part in the can and hope for the best. 9 times out of 10 it would fix it.

There's a huge difference in chemical resistance between nitrile, vinyl, latex, and rubber. For example, a chemical that melts latex won't do a thing to the others. Just because a chemical melted his glove doesn't mean it will melt components in your fuel system.

Sea Foam and Lucas look like they're the ones I would go for. But gas also seems to remove some buildup as well. Like anything, it can take a few cleanings to remove buildup of carbon, deposits, etc. so I'm wondering if some of the bottles should be changed to reflect that their cleaner works but due to varying amounts of carbon or whatever, it may take more than one treatment or a certain number of treatments for full dissolving/cleansing to occur. Thanks for testing the products and showing the degrees to which the cleaners are effective under cold conditions.

Tulene is a solvent and octane booster. They use it for paint thinner for the thick parking lot paint so it will run in the sprayer. It will clean fuel systems and increase the octane. I used to run two cups per 5 gallons of gas in my crotch rockets. Exhaust smells like bandaids or gauze. My pipes always smelt like freshly wielded metal it's high octane booster and cleaner burns all the carbon out

This test does not duplicate interior conditions of the valves while and engine is running. Many of these will have chemistry designed to work with heat. In fairness, this is an incredibly difficult test to duplicate operating conditions fairly without buying 5 new valves to run in 5 cylinders while swapping out the 6th valve with 1 of these valves at a time while running a tank of gas with each product.
