Today they can be found all over the world but only come close enough to shore certain times a year to reproduce. However timing these events can be hard to predict and it was only be mere chance that the Brave Wilderness team was able to happen upon one of these bizarre arthropods.

Super late to the party, but FYI sand fleas aren't fleas, they're tiny immature barrel-shaped crabs that live in the sand along the waterline and jump like fleas when disturbed. They are harmless, and they grow to be about as big as a small shrimp. As a kid we used to find their holes by the bubbles and try to dig them up before they could dig themselves deeper and get away. On the other hand, you have sea LICE, which is just the term for microscopic baby jellyfish that give you an itchy rash when you swim in tropical waters during the summer.

Fun fact: Horseshoe crabs are in the same subphylum as spiders, Cheilcerata. This makes horseshoe crabs more closely related to spiders than they are even to other crabs. Like spiders, horseshoe crabs do not have a mandible and instead have chelicerae in front of their mouth parts.

Horseshoe crabs are really common along the North Shore of Long Island, near the shores of the beaches of the Long Island Sound. I used to see them, and even pick them up, often as a kid. they never harmed me, but they always bewildered me. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized they were arachnids!! Fascinating creatures!!

I've spent countless hours wading through freezing low tide, getting crabs and clams and stuff like that. I've killed a small shark. I'm still more worried about sand fleas since they can get in your boots and your clothes and your hair. Trust me, it's no fun getting home, seeing something out of the corner of your eye, looking in a mirror, and seeing a big bug crawling around in your beard an inch from your eye and your mouth.

Interesting how broadly the term “sand flea” is given to different species. I’ve always thought of the term being in reference to mole crabs (also super neat critters) The little jumpy bois were just called “sand hoppers”. Neat.
