Everyone wants the strong version of the CD transmission

A little late to the party, but some important things to know here: CD00x transmissions are DE only, the transmissions in the video are from HR/VHR's and aren't CD gear boxes but they are virtually the same where it counts. All CD transmissions will have an external slave cylinder on the bellhousing. When we are looking to ID a transmission, we look at VIN on the plate first. This tells us what vehicle they came out of, based on production date we can narrow that down with our reference chart that I'll link below. If you don't have a VIN # you can look at the shifter support bracket at the rear that you point out on your G37 transmission. If the mounting points are rubber isolated with small bushings like the one you have, then chances are you have a CD009 transmission. There was a month or two change in production where early CD009 transmissions still had the early solid mounted shifter support bracket, but that is very rare to see. These aren't easily swapped so I highly doubt you'll ever come across a transmission where someone has swapped those around. Also, do not rely on casting numbers on the bellhousing to help you identify the model, the CD#1 markings that you see are irrelevant. There was no CD001 transmission. As was previously mentioned, the transmissions in the video are NOT a CD00x. This is important to know because they are not interchangeable, the bell housings are different and cannot be swapped. If you're using this transmission on a different engine (not a VQ) and plan on cutting the bellhousing than it really doesn't matter since everything else is virtually the same between DE and HR transmissions, but if you have a DE 350Z or G35 you DO NOT WANT an HR or VHR transmission. www.z1motorsports.com/upload/Z1_VQ_Transmission_Guide.pdf

To sum up what you say, it's a very likely scenario that you have a cd009 if the shifter bracket has isolated mounted bushings, and has an external slave. The casting numbers on the left side of the bell housing are non reliable, but the ID plate on the right is a sure fire way to confirm what year/vehicle the trans came out of. Correct? Seems like neither of the trans in this vid are good swap candidates as they are from the later gen z34/g37 which have different bell housing mounting points. Most swap kits use the same mounting points, and only require trimming 14-15mm off the face vs cutting the bell housing off for say a mazworx or jim wolf type adapter Correct?

@@nicetimeracing3544 Correct, if you have isolated bushing mounts for the shifter support bracket 9/10 times that's a CD009. In fact, can't say we've ever seen one that wasn't. The casting #'s are basically useless, we would rely on the VIN plate to ID the vehicle it came from. That way guarantees we'll get the information correct. The 370Z and G37 transmissions are still great swap candidates if you're cutting the bellhousing because they're the same in every other area, the front cover over the input shaft will need to be swapped if you plan on running an external slave.

Just an FYI to anyone watching this, the internal slave front plate will bolt on the older transmissions but will not fully seat. The input shaft bearing OD is larger on the external slave transmission so the bearing does not go the 1/8" or so into the cover. So from a distance it could be stuck on there but there will be a 1/8" gap or so between the cover and the case. I bought an early CD transmission for mockup earlier this year that had the internal slave cover bolted on just to hold the internals in the case but had this gap. After some research I learned the input shaft bearing OD is larger on the external slave transmissions and was reduced in size slightly when the internal slave was added.

From my experience only way to truly confirm the transmission is from the vin plate on the passenger side of transmission. Case number and shifter bracket can’t confirm that, I’ve had 2 cd009’s out of 2006 350z and g35. Both had cd0 #2 stamping.

Good video. Only I've got 1 question I cannot for the life of me get an answer to. I'm looking at these for a turbo ls swap cuz I like the gear ratios much better. Now I know that alot depends on how well maintained these trans are in relation to the amount of horsepower they'll actually take. But it's not really Horsepower that'll break a trans it's overall torque that'll make or break it. Boosted v6's do put down great numbers for both hp/tq when in boost, but not the constant 400-500 ft lbs a v8 will make constant w no boost. That's what I'm trying to find out, will this hold up to a destroked 6.0 v8(425-475ft lbs constant -650-700ft lbs under boost)?

imOJ it’s a very strong transmission, you can’t go wrong choosing it. I personally prefer the external slave just cause if it ever goes bad I can easily replace it and not have to remove the transmission to replace the slave. But you can get a 370z for a really good deal, go for it! I wouldn’t pay over $1000 for it though.

imOJ try finding a crashed 05 to 07 350z or g35, they have the cd009 with external slave. Try checking out LKQ salvage yards, check out their website, I have found plenty of them and them transmissions are super cheap, you just gotta pull them out yourself.

I believe all G37's and 370z's have the good transmission, the CD009 or JK40, whatever you want to call it. As to how much power it can handle, that's kind of up in the air. I've seen videos of 350z's putting out 1000HP on the stock transmission. But you can always blow up a transmission even at stock power depending on how you maintain it and how rough you drive it.

Dakota Digital has a box that uses signal from something like an abs sensor for a feed, then you used a GPS to get your speed whilst driving, then adjust the box up or down to calibrate the speedo right.

@@whocares5188 Lmao the 500hp isn't hard in fact you can get it by not even removing the engine. A simple "3-way" catch can would solve the oil burning issue if you didn't want to change the pistons out. Problem is most people only use a 2-way (One in one out) catch can & still ends up sucking oil. Even with a LS you'll still require a catch can for high hp applications.
