I would think the amount of water to re-hydrate would remain constant regardless of altitude. It will take "more time" for water to boil, at higher elevations, not more water.

Yes, the Peak Refuel bags are food safe, and meant for pouring boiling water into for you to rehydrate the meal. This is the best way to “cook” a peak meal.

That's what I've been doing AFTER discovering I didn't have the capacity to eat all the food in an entire foil pouch in one meal. As a normal routine, I open the foil pouches at home, carefully weigh out 2 equal portions, pour the portion into 1qt FREEZER ziplock baggies. When I'm ready to eat I boil water in a 750ml Titanium cup, insert the cup& boiling water into a self-made Koozie, pour the meal out of the ziplock baggie & into the cup of boiling water, put the cup's cover on the cup, wait 15 minutes; I then have a HOT HOT meal good to the last sporkful. Those foil pouches dissipate too much heat & the food at the bottom of the pouch is barely lukewarm by the time I get to it + my hands & spork is messy with food. I use a short foldup spork to eat my food out of my 750ml cup. No problem getting my hand/spork messy with food.

Be careful what you wish for. Mountain House has reduced the quantity of food in their pouches by approximately 1/3 with the new packaging, yet the pouches are still selling for the same price.

My understanding is just the simple fact that there’s way less preservatives and soy type fillers in the meals. Real meat and just quality ingredients.

They haven’t been around long enough as a company to get the 30 year lab certifications YET….But I’m sure the longer they are around, the longer their shelf life will be.

I just checked. As of now, the Reno store doesn't have any of the 3 new meals on the shelves nor are they available from REI online.

Still not available on the shelves of REI stores & no one knows if or when the new meals will be stocked.

Right on! I've been doing the same in my recent trips to take less food but still get the calories that I need to stay fueled.

Yeah, the funny thing is that some of the meals are plenty of food as a single serving, while others are packed and when split are more single serving.

A single serving meal? What's that? A single serving varies from person to person. I normally open the food pouches at home & weigh out 2 equal portions of food, put them in 1 qt Freezer ziplock baggies. That is just right for MEeee. It may not be enough for you or others.

Certainly you can spend less money for food you take backpacking. Knorr sides and ramen, or even fresh options. So you do you, but within the industry of food like this, $10-$14 is pretty standard.

Peak Refuel meals cost a lot less for more nutritional value than you'll ever get when you go buy a FAT PILL (Bacon Cheeseburger with fries) at any fast-food franchise. Think about that. You'll part with a $15.00 bill most any time you buy much of anything at any fast-food franchise - talk about being EXPENSIVE & all you get is a little protein with lots of salt, fat, or sugar.

@@lakorai2 When a person is physically active, the body needs more salt & fat. Granted, it is unhealthy for a with a sedentary lifestyle like having a job sitting in front of a computer or sitting in a call center answering phones all day. People that work in call centers have obviously been eating themselves into obesity & diabetes most of their adult life. Same with computer programmers, same with most fat, overweight Americans. Not necessarily... $10-$13 is pretty standard for entree meals from any of the popular food brands. Mtn House, Pack It Gourmet, Backpackers Pantry, Good To Go, etc, ALL have meals in the $10-$13 price point.

I used to think this too, and I still agree when compared to stuff like Ramen and Knorr type products you can get at a 10th of the cost at your local supermarket. But next to other convenience brands already mentioned, this stuff seems to be a fair deal. Factor in the lesser water needed, which means less fuel needed, which leads to some money savings over time there. Add on Devin's discount code and that will also bring the cost down to be neck and neck with an average Mountain House. Still, it's not the kind of backpacking meal I can afford for every meal on all my trips, but it's certainly a brand I enjoy eating for a luxury, almost restaurant quality, convenience meal every now and then and worth the occasional "splurge" in my opinion.
