Do it yourself Welding Table with Sliding Extensions

Here is my movable welding table on casters with sliding extensions. This will be an ongoing project and I do plan on adding a shelf underneath with some draws. Pretty happy with how this came out and the end result came out with a nice flat surface to carry out future projects.
Main materials are 40x40x2.5 SHS and 50x25x2.5 RHS.
The SHS used for the slides are 40x40x2 and 35x35x2.

I'm tempted to fill the tubes with concrete. Also I would add extra support bars to keep them from bending with clamping pressure.

Great design. I miss being able to weld/work outside all year round in Australia. In Canada, you get maybe 6 months if you're lucky. Currently -4C outside, and we all know how much of a pain welding cold steel is

Very nice job, the table extension is a great idea, only thing is I would slide the extension back and lock it against the cutting saw to make sure it doesn't vibrate off the extension. good on you I subscribing so I can see you work.

Sweet bench, I bought an old hospital bed, its foot pump operated type so can raise and lower it without worrying about frying anything and cost me $50. I like that slat top though for clamps and such so might have to redo the top of it maybe like that as it has a flat sheet metal top, it already has the extension wing on it which I hadn't really come up with a use for beside supporting longer stuff but I like how you mounted the cut off saw too, something else to mess with. 👍👍

The slats are really handy for clamping things down. I think I will make a top that will slide into them so that I can also use it as a work bench.

you should add a "pocket" at the legs so that you can hang a disk polisher/cutter with its supporting handle, that's what I added to mine.

Your middle support should had been from the base of each leg to stop the bowing what you have done is a short term fix . Ps love the style of table

Nice work bro. I have sugestion maby if you support frame in the middle you can avoid bending table and flat problem will be gone. I am building welding table also and i have also that problem. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱

Very happy with how it turned out. Nice and simple. Make sure you put in the center support post to get the table flat otherwise it will dip in the middle I found.

Hey Mate. Its holding up great. I use it just about everyday im working in the workshop. The top needs a good scuff back and re coated in a wax paste but other than it works really well. I want to add a few additions to it when I get the time.

Thanks for the Sub Mate. The steel to make this I actually have no idea as I had some laying around and I got some more delivered. At a very rough guess maybe around 400.

That blue steel you can weld through. Does not need to be cleaned. You will need something more to support that cut off so it does not fall though.

I took the blue paint off so it was a nice steel on steel contact to try and get the top as flat as possible. As for the cold cut saw the sliding extensions can be pushed together to secure the saw in nicely and locked using the locking bolts.

Hey Mate I used 40x40 SHS x 2mm wall. Inner was 35x35 SHS and any wall thickness is fine

Hey Mate so the bench top dimensions are (including extensions) 1770mm long, 820mm width and height is 905 (60mm height adjustment). The slats are 50x25 RHS and I used 22 lengths at 820. 35mm spacing in between each slat.

what with people having painted steel from suppliers. mine all comes bare...its it something they do outside US?

Ha I did notice that when watching videos from the States that all your steel looked bare metal. So here in Aus the steel mostly comes coated in a blue coating. I believe its some kind of primer.

Ideally hole top would be better but you need pretty thick heavy plate to do that. If I was doing a lot more fabrication and fit up work I would look at the hole top. This was just an easy way of making a fab table to suit my needs.

The slats are for being able to position an F clamp to any position on the table to clamp metal down to reduce any distortion and get nice square joins.

I just priced up one that is roughly this design and the steel was around $350 from a steel supplier.

I would say steel would cost about 300 - 400 bucks and 50 bucks for the casters. Then Obviously your labor. 2 - 3 days to make.

Not sure if its just an Australian thing but our steel comes coated in a primer. Its weld through so no issues with welding it.

Well, my comment has disappeared and I think I wrote that this is good work and helps me have confidence for my new hobby. The bad about this video . . . camera work. Far, far too much movement. The technique to use is move, pause, move, pause, rinse and repeat as they say. As it is now I have to stop, I'm am getting dizzy . . and I am honestly not exaggerating. I like your table design and am now considering doing something much like it. I think I might go for thicker steel for all the bottom frame. A good foundation makes for a strurdier build. Yours is what it is and you might find extra bracing is required going forward. I was wondering about the negative clamp though. With just tacks holding the cross members, if you used the table to be negative it would have to travel through tacks too. The one other thing I am concerned about is the top of the table. It needs to be a smooth as a baby's bum all over. I can't see it in your video if you have gone the extra and sanded the steel to a smooth satin finish. You mentioned wax so maybe you did but does wax conduct electricity? Anyway, 2 years on who cares eh?

Hello.. This was one of my first videos and was new to making them and the whole KZfaq thing. I have since invested in a gimbal as I recognised my camera work was not the best. All a part of learning. As for the steel thickness I am very happy with the thickness and if I were to make it again I would use that same thickness. I have never had issues with earthing due to the tacks. Thanks for the concerns.
