Am I the only one who finds it faszinating, that Americans never say, that they are from America but instead say the state ane the city?

It's true. For some reason we think that people outside of the US cares or even knows different cities and states. LOL.

it's because America is different worlds haha. ONE state in in the USA (California) is larger than all of Japan, and even then, most people say NorCal or SoCal because the divide is so massive. So If someone said "America" it wouldn't fit because someone from Texas is entirely different than someone from New York culturally

So it's okay for me to say, I am from Nizhny Novgorod in Nizhegorodskaya oblast? Because the state is twice as big as Germany and the city is the 5th biggest city in Russia?

Yes, yes you can lmao. I live in Japan and plenty of people say they're from Sydney Australia, or Sao Paulo. Like you're not proving a point. American's speak to each other like that when someone asks where they're from, and there's nothing wrong with that habit. Who knows maybe someone knows where you're from? From my experience, every time I say I'm from America, if I bring up I'm from California everyone's fascinated if I came from Los Angeles or San Francisco. It's just all in good fun.

I think your summary didn't really represent what people actually said. Both sides were present and there wasn't really a conclusion. My personal experience is that 1. many Japanese people are too shy to speak English even if they know some, and 2. in most cases, their English is pretty limited. But I 100% agree that no matter how much or little English they speak, they always try their very best to help you out! That's what matters. 🙂

S. S. Because learning an entirely nee language for a one-time visit to a country is ridiculous. You should know the basics like how to ask for directions, but the basics don’t get you very far. And especially in the case of English which is spoken around the world. It’s much more reasonable for an English speaker to speak English in Japan than a Russian to speak Russian in Mexico, for example.

I've never had an issue with the Japanese people I've interacted with. Obviously, my in person interactions haven't taken place in Japan, since I haven't been, yet. But, I've interacted with a lot of Japanese tourists and visitors, over the years, and they've always had some degree of English down. And all my Japanese friends, who do live in Japan, are pretty good with English. The only issue I encounter, is people being shy to use English, because they don't think they speak it very well, or are just self conscious/overall shy about using it.

@@romangonzalezadrianmaurici6302 I also happen to be Japanese American(Ainu), so I have family in Japan. I speak almost exclusively in Japanese with them, because I don’t want to lose my language, but I’ve not had an issue with English with any of my Japanese friends and family, including those who have never even left Japan. My experiences are my own “bottle”, if you will, but it’s also the only experiences I have to go on. It’s not bias, it’s simply that I can only go by my own experiences.

It's the 21st century, in most developed countries you'll have a significant amount of the population able to speak at least a basic level of English, if you go to somewhere like the Netherlands for example then it's basically taken for granted that everyone speaks English, there's nothing wrong with most Japanese people having poor English, they don't need it for the most part after all. But to say it's unexpected isn't true, it should be expected that a country as affluent, well educated and modern as Japan speaks the global language.

English is never be a universal language. Coz more people Worldwide cannot understand and speak english than the total population of the World who can understand english. English is unnecessary in your country, if most of your countrymen cannot understand english.

I recently vistied Osaka Japan. To my surprise I noticed a lot of people their especially working at shops and restuarants speak fluent Mandarin than English. Why is that?

Maybe they are Chinese who live in Japan, and it might be a little easier for Japanese people to learn Chinese than English.

Japanese "When in rome do as the romans do". Foreigners "Japanese is a difficult language, and a boring language that does not need to be learned. In the first place, Japan is part of the United States of America. Japanese people have to speak English. Senior citizens like us don't need to be told what to do by the Japanese. English is a global language."

Interesting that Russian lady is on enemy soil, as an interesting fact, Russia and Japan never signed a peace treaty for fighting each other in WW2 so there technically still at war, so watch out Ruski 😂😂

@@denischadima1175 Thank you for your comment. Regretfully, no I have not ever lived in Japan but when I visited Osaka in 1997, they were very accommodating of the English language. Perhaps, it was because they were friends of my family members that did live in Japan. Collectively, I may be biased. Thank you very much for bringing that to my attention. I still regard their culture as an intelligent one; any disagreements upon that conclusion Denis ?
