I feel like the first guy is definitely correct that it makes it feel like it's easier to connect with the music when it's in a different language and you don't necessarily understand the lyrics (so you don't realize if they're cringy) and just listen to the sound of the music. That's why he said he enjoys Jpop, and I feel like it's also why a lot of non-Korean speakers enjoy Kpop. It might even be why Koreans seem to enjoy Western pop so much. I really don't understand the guy who said he thinks Kpop songs all sound too similar but he listens to pop (I'm assuming that means Western pop)...because to me Western pop all sounds similar. And honestly, I don't think foreigners who are educated about Korea at least a little bit have a stereotype that Koreans all listen to Kpop...I think it's pretty well known that ballads, hip hop and for the older generation trot seem to be the most dominant genres. I am kind of amused by the number of times you heard New Jeans in the responses, you could probably predict what people would say by that point.

@@ElwynnForest I'm sorry but I don't agree. I don't think the voices in Kpop sound similar at all, and honestly I think you'd find the variety in it if you looked into it more. It's a bit different with Kpop in that a single group can be doing many different genres in their songs, as opposed to Western artists just sticking to one genre so you have to listen to more artists if you want more genres. However, I would agree a lot of Kpop TITLE tracks might have a kind of similar sound because they're meant to be catchy. If you want variety you NEED to dig into the entire album, not just the title tracks. To me, if I put on a pop radio station in America, every song is going to sound very similar to my ears. It is funny seeing how foreigners feel kpop is edgy, different, more creative than western pop, and that western pop has become boring. But when it comes to the koreans interviewed, they feel kpop is bland and boring, where as western pop is more creative and diverse. Funny how that works. I guess that's where growing up in a certain pop culture comes to play. Koreans are used to korean pop culture and are looking for something different, where as the comments I read appear to be used to western pop culture and so are also looking for something different as well.

If you look at the Korean music charts, three major genre occupy the top 100. Hip-hop or hip-hop r&b, ballad, idol music. In addition, English pop songs and trot songs often appear on the charts. Here, idol music is commonly recognized as K-pop. Especially overseas, it seems to be recognized like this. Perhaps it is because K-pop idols have so many overseas fans. The reason why these K-pop idols' music is on the charts is mostly because of their fandom. It's far from popular. Of course, some songs from girl groups such as New Jeans, Lesserafim, and ive aespa have also been popular. Even my friends in their 30s know about it. However, except for BTS, boy groups in particular are really not well-known in Korea. Their song is not popular without fan's support. This is because the song itself is far from popular. It is different from previous generation boy groups. It is closer to the taste preferred abroad. In Korea, even Fifty Fifty's songs weren't very popular in Korea. Koreans don't listen to synthpop. As generations pass, the songs of K-pop groups become more experimental and seem to be made to suit the tastes of overseas fans. I think that's much more prominent in boy groups. Not that this is bad. K-pop has always evolved. However, it may feel unfamiliar to the Korean public

I 100% agree. As somone that listens to kpop but also to a lot of other genres it really seems like back then kpop groups rlly "copied" western pop/hip hop to make it likeable for Koreans since that was their target group cuz kpop was pretty much only known to korea and maybe some other east Asian countries (that might also be the reason why so many 2nd gen kpop songs sound so nostalgic to me even tho ive never listened to kpop when i was a kid) but now that their target group is so diverse n mostly foreign they actually do the opposite and make it "sound" more like kpop cuz that's what attracts foreigners to kpop oftentimes (because many kpop fans r tired of the same old pop etc. and got into kpop cuz its sounds so different)

K-pop, which is referred to in foreign countries, is idol dance music. In every country, younger people enjoy dance music more than older people. @ERICASHANNON9 ай бұрын
I noticed that also, that it’s what is at the top of the charts is what they listen to not because they like it. Only a few can actually define what they like and choose to listen to it even if it’s not trending. Korean’s decision making for everything really is based on trends. This becomes problematic when it comes to the music charts because automatically, the underdog will never have a chance not matter how talented theory may be. The charts only shows who is popular because of trends, which is contingent on the size of their agency not actually admiration of vocal ability or content. BTS is proof of that. You think they would have learned from that mistake.

Listening to Korean music since like, 2008, I got burnt out on it in 2014 before it even exploded globally, but I've been listening to some newer groups that made their debut after. It's really interesting to see how things have evolved, but you'll also notice how things go in cycles for each generation. BlackPink is basically the replacement for 2NE1, Twice the new version of Girls Generation etc. This is why J-pop has a lot of longevity for me with individual artists since it's hard to replace trendsetters like Namie Amuro or even Ayumi Hamasaki. That kind of individualistic style is a little harder to find in K-pop.
@MrSuperjam7898 ай бұрын
Also, J-pop is very diverse musically as well. That might be tough for a newcomer but once you dive in, there's so much stuff to find. With K-pop, idols are very overrepresented, so it tends to crowd out non-idols. I will say the one thing that J-pop currently lacks is a new diva like Namie Amuro, Hikaru Utada and Koda Kumi. Like, the only one I can think of at the moment is Aimyon but her music is different from the people mention(still love her stuff though).

Like I'm bilingual, so I gotta find music that's not cringe (in the 2 languages I speak) & which actually make sense. I'm a 'too much' music person, so like I really do love lots of variety in music, but yeah I'm slowly losing interest in kpop, like it was good when I first got into it, but I think that was mostly because the whole music was kinda different(since I didn't know the language). Tho I have an Ult boygroup that I stan(I used to like lots of boygroups, but this is the only one that I still like) & I love their music, so I'm pretty sure I'll still listen to them even if I do loose interest in the rest of kpop. Oh & the only thing that's stopping me is that the new girlgroup songs are really good! like I have never been a fan of girlgroups but the new girlgroups are actually making good music imo & it's quite vibeyy. So, if they still keep up with it, I might not leave kpop.

As an American, I listen to SHINee and hope they tour the US. I also like SF9. Kpop has such a great beat to dance to. I'm more of a music fan than a lyric fan. Prefer the guy groups over the girl bands, plus I like the way the guys dance. The guys have such wonderful voices, yet the girls are too high pitched. I'm surprised that HipHop came up so often, as a preference to many Koreans.

Interesting content :) Many thanks. Nice variety of people. I esp. appreciated the J-pop fan interview. I also like Korean songs because I don't understand the lyrics. But I always check the translation and Korean songs are often pretty clean which is great. Kpop-wise, Seventeen rules: I think I have "liked" 40 of their songs. Which . is . quite . unbelievable. I have a now crush on the pink shirt guy you interviewed, such a nice smily expressive face. The interviewer looks too good though, it is distracting kkk Good thing I had to focus on the subtitles ^^

i never get the vibes of idol's music, and i feel mostly these artists are not doing their music with a heart and soul. they get it produced ( and even other artists getting it produced ) but the sicnificang difference is that the k- pop artists are so connected with their management, that in every single interview or performance i simple cannot feel their own idendity but just an empty soul that dance on the stage cause someone order them to do so, same goes for their music, their style, their fashion, the interview and what they talk on their interviews. music should be freedome and give an inspiration about freedome. but k-pop and idol music in my eyes had absolutely nothing to do with freedome and own decisions and own experiences its an entire machinery of someone higher people order you how to act to sing to answer to dance to behavior. and in end " how much to weight " forcing to change appearnece... by surgerys it gives me vibes of..... beeing an empty soul having no idendity. and because of that i simply cannot get along with k-pop. it has zero uniqueness.

It might not be that way anymore but when I was living in Korea in 2014-2018 a LOT of Koreans liked hip hop. It's why 쇼미 and 고등래퍼 were popular for years and any time rappers released songs on 쇼미they would hit the charts. There was a time 'Mommae' and similar songs played all on the streets and you couldn't escape them. Rappers like Amine had a better reception in Korea than even in the US. Koreans have always seemed to love ballads. Hip hop doesn't seem trendy anymore but there was definitely a hip hop influence before. A lot of my Korean friends who are now in their mid to late 20s still only listen to Khiphop/R&B/indie and the odd kpop song here and there.

Why do people follow what's popular? Are you a sheep? Where is your individuality? You should listen to your soul, get to know the real you by giving opportunities to diversity. I used to listen to both K-pop and A-pop, but now it's not enjoyable. I don't know if they seem to be making songs for idiots or if they think people are idiots. Both K-pop and A-pop used to be great, now they're both terrible.

Some say that K-Pop songs sound the same but I don't agree at all. There are so many different styles that K-Pop group release. I discovered K-pop in 2010 cause I was sick and tired hearing English in songs. I wanted to hear another language. like the Korean language a lot and I like K-pop songs a lot. Not all things of course. My favourite groups are ATEEZ, MONSTA X, A.C.E, ONEUS, Dreamcatcher, MAMAMOO. And then some solo singers like Kim Junsu (XIA), Kisu, Taemin, Henry..... Another reason why I like K-Pop is the choreos and the beautiful clothes they wear. My advice for Koreans would be, give K-Pop a listen and you will find amazing music
