Do LUMI keys play like a piano?

LUMI keys by ROLI are an exciting new addition to the piano key world. They have DS 5.5 keys (5.5" octave) which means they are more accessible to the average female hand than the standard 6.5" octave keys. But do they play like a piano? Are they the next digital piano you can take to a gig? Watch and find out :-)

Would LOVE to see you review the French "Piano de Voyage" travel piano; it's built in 2-octave sections just like the Lumi, but not as a midi controller, looks like a real piano as far as key depth; 2 sections are ~ €629.

It was just amazing and wonderful to watch you play. Thanks for the review. Now I am sure that I didn't do a mistake by buying two of them. Me too I was thinking about 3. My Yamaha Clavinova CLP 320 is 88 keys. My Casio CT-S1 is 61. Now with two of these. I will get to 48. We will see. I just did not understand how to manage to play a sheet of music with just 24 keys. That's why I did bought two.

YES!!! Omg I 100% agree!! I also have small hands and can only reach an octave. Btw, I have always dreamed of a portable keyboard that would come apart like this Lumi one does, if only it were weighted and thicker! I still might go for it though because I’m more of a singer/songwriter so I can probably get away with some chords being messy.

Totally understand how you feel and happy to see a pianist's perspective on this. I just had to request a refund after receiving my LUMI keys today... I was so excited, but I'm very disappointed with how the keys feel. This is the reason I gave to ROLI: "I found the velocity of the keys to be really inconsistent. Sometimes when playing a scale, one note will be very loud, another will be very soft, sometimes notes will be missed all together. Especially if I am playing softer, there will be many notes missing. The key response is just disappointing, and without the basic feel of playing being solid, the keyboard doesn't feel worth the price tag at all. It looks beautiful and there are some cool features, but I can't stand having to adjust my playing so much to compensate for the velocity measurement being all over the place."

Hey! This is a great video! I'm not a pianist, I've been making electronic music as a hobby since I was a teenager and I'm 38 years old now. I've been learning classical piano for more than a year now and I also felt the same way on these keys. Especially when you play deep into the keys, it's too much effort to strike the key. I have a KZfaq channel (2.6K subs) and I wanted to know if you would be ok with me mentioning this video. I'm making a review as well with some of the updates of the app. I'll put a link so people can find you as well.

Im not sure if you are aware but the extra travel that the keys go down that takes more resistence is aftertouch. Aftertouch is used for synthesizers and as you press the key further down a parameter changes on the synthesizer.
@PlayPianoChords
@PlayPianoChords Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I am aware of aftertouch and what it does on a synth. The aftertouch on a grand piano is different than the aftertouch on a synth. The aftertouch on a LUMI is different from both. It is quite firm and this KZfaq was answering the question, Do the LUMI keys feel like a digital piano, and the answer is no, it doesn't.

Thank you for this wonderful review. I have three kids who took classical piano for two years. Their teacher was overly strict with a lot of negative reinforcement but they learned a lot. They were only allowed to play classical songs and so after so much pressure and her telling them how awful they were they quit. Then covid happened. I feel really terrible that they might lose all they’ve learned. Do you think the lumi would be good for them to pick it back up again? We have a real piano in the house that they could switch back to. I think half the battle in getting more kids to play piano is for them to actually enjoy what they’re doing. They wanted to venture out to pop songs but they just could not. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
@PlayPianoChords
@PlayPianoChords 3 жыл бұрын
Finding the right teacher for your kids can be a challenge. Some parents want a strict classical training for their kids and some (like yourself) want them to play more current tunes in addition to learning all the traditional stuff. I agree, everyone learns more when they are having fun! I don't know where you live but there are more good online options now because of Covid. I have no affiliation with LUMI and while they are fun, I am not sure if they would be more effective than just learning fun pop tunes on your regular piano. A portable keyboard is great for taking over to a friends house if you have a garage band but the LUMI keys are pretty specific to their software and don't function like a portable keyboard. You are welcome to check out my online piano chording classes. I like to teach pop, jazz and improv and find it also benefits classical learning in regards to ear, rhythm and form. play-piano-chords-today.teachable.com/courses There are more courses being uploaded all the time and they are suitable for teens and adults. I wish you and your kids the best of luck in their musical journey!

No, it needs an app (either LUMI or Garage Band or something like that) and a speaker to make a sound. My frustration is the action was unsatisfying. I have heard they have tweaked it but I needed more of a piano action than they were offering. I am using my LUMI keys as a silent practice keyboard mostly and I have worked with a team to create a custom 5.5 digital keyboard with 88 keys that has a lovely action. @@PlayPianoChords then it won't work with Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement because with the thumb and little finger on black keys, and the index, middle, or ring finger need to press down on another black key, then it is very close to the "felt" area (or is further back). I know you are not a synth player (assumption) but you should check out the Expensive E Osmose for their very expressive keys. They are different than a Piano ofcourse but they are bigger and have a newer technology keybed for classical expression in the digital sound world. Lumi: I believe you can adjust sensitivity in the app but don't quote me on that because I don't own any.
@lindaraegould
@lindaraegould Жыл бұрын
I do play synths and yes, they are changing in their sensitivity. The LUMI keys didn’t have a sensitivity issue, they had an issue where the key was almost impossible to push down at the back. Synth and piano keys need to be easy to push down at all points so their fulcrum was off. I tried the new LUMI keys recently at the NAMM show and there was a modest improvement but still not what you need to really play the keys.

I got the pre-order of Lumi Keys 1 and it looks like they may have fixed your main problem with it. I'm really hoping so! From their website: playlumi.com/lumi-whats-new - Better key action Key action, or the way that keys respond when pressed and released, varied across a small number of Kickstarter Edition models. As part of the keyboard's internal redesign, we’ve made key action more consistent by stiffening the chassis, improving the sensor design and tightening key alignment tolerances. Key sensitivity also is even more precise than before.

Very honest review. Portability is not the flagship for this one. The main reason for this MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) is that they has special features like (1) Pitch (when bending horizontally the key), (2) aftertouch (to increase the volumen for example, in strings), (3) hit the key to get a different sound and (4) release suddenly (like if it was a spring and let it jump) to get an inverted sound (reversely). roli.com/products/blocks/lumi-keys-studio-edition here you may see how it works

Thanks for the amazing video, this was exactly what I was trying to find out. Does lumi keys have a port where you can connect a sustain pedal? Are the keys velocity sensitive? I'm also wondering if I put 4 lumi keys together, if the 96 key thing would be super weird if I only need 88 :). I am a concert pianist and composer who travels internationally, and my dream is to fit my touring gear only in a carry on. I would absolutely love to not need to check my 88 key midi controller every time I travel, and then trying to get it in a taxi when it's too long for the trunk...and then lugging it through the airport....and then carrying it through cobblestone streets...etc etc. I absolutely love the idea of a midi controller that fits in a backpack, and I love the idea that you can connect multiple pieces. I totally agree we need a portable midi controller geared for concert pianists and professionals. It seems like lumi keys is almost there, it's so close. The requirements I have are: (1) playability, it needs to feel like I'm playing a real piano, not a toy (2) midi compatibility with all logic pro plugins including NI Kontakt, Spitfire Audio, etc. that works the same way a standard midi controller would work, plug and play, etc (3) keys need to be velocity sensitive (it's impossible to play deep emotional pieces when no matter how hard you hit the key, it's all one volume lol) (4) needs to accommodate sustain pedal, and ideally have a port for an additional expression pedal as well (5) 88 keys, ideally without extra octaves hanging off :) (6) portable enough to fit in a backpack or carry on. I'm so grateful the technology is almost there, I absolutely love the lights and the rainbow lighting. As you said, if they could just use the same technology to make one geared for professionals, that would be a dream come true. Thank you again for this video!

I agree, they are so close and I share all your keyboard desires! Yes the keys are somewhat velocity sensitive but they do not feel like a real piano or even a digital piano. No, they don't accommodate a sustain pedal. Sigh. I thought the idea of 96 keys was pretty amazing but think I'll stick with just the two sections for now. Good luck with everything!

I like the critics, but its not as right as its supposed to be. I mean, ofc its not gonna feel as good as a real piano, because its a 4D touch keyboard. That means it has a certain pressure on the keys for when you play Synths on the keyboard, and not the original piano sound. Plus, for the other points that you mentioned, i think its mostly because its a small MIDI keyboard that explains all of the rest
