I was talking to her in English but she kept on answering in bahasa and I said I'm sorry but I don't understand Bahasa and she was like angry and told me to (learn bahasa then) in a rude accent with rude expression on her face. Northern European and lived in Malaysia for a decade and Malaysia is the only country i have experienced aggressive racism and other forms of racism both from institutions and individuals multiple times. As with everything it's a minority of people. 1. Hot accused of being Persian and got jumped by 3 guys with weapons, luckily for me they weren't good fighters, luckily for them i was tired and emotional. The PDRM returned their weapons back to them! At same time we (police and I) witnessed a bag snatching and they did nothing as the victim was ethnic chinese and the perpetrator looked sub-saharan african. 2. Dual pricing system, official and unofficial. Taxi drivers getting violent when u refuse to not pay off meter!! (Not an issue now thx Grab) And any museum, park etc etc etc 3. Taxation WITHOUT representation. 4. Government workers obsession in knowing the ethnicity of my partner, and treat me differently depending on how I answer. 5. Getting offered different food and constantly being asked if i like spicy food/can use chopsticks/eat with hands etc. Guys your food ain't spicy at ALL... 6. Can't access some simple things as don't have a NRIC... Example, was unable to get a JPJ appointment to renew license through their useless app as no IC. List goes on. Mostly it's an inconvenience but has turned needlessly and stupidly violent multiple times. Malaysians seem to have a need to put people in a box so that they can then make assumptions and avoid certain topics. Leads to some really dafuq conversations at times. Used to have a staggeringly racist boss too, to the point i didn't understand her at times as our thoughts were so misaligned. Wow that was cathartic.😂

The word ‘Asian’ is too generic, we are not the same people, the same culture and the same mentality.. like me as a Malaysian I can’t relate much with Vietnam let alone east Asia.. and also Central Asia and Middle East are also part of Asia… usually to westerners perspective, ‘Asian’ to them are Chinese looking people and Budhist background, hence they think all asian people look the same, thats why I recently refrain to identify myself as asian and Malaysia as an asian country because the reality is that we are Nusantaran & Austronesian….. we have our own identity, culture and value, we are closely related to the Polynesian of pacific islanders.

To be honest based on my experience before stayed at Europe country, westerns are more racist than Malaysian. Some of them hates Malaysian because of Islam, because this country is small. They hate azan, they hate hijab etc. Somehow, the funniest thing is some of them love our food, especially rendang and teh tarik (this happened during raya puasa, few times we had open house, invited them for dinner and tau2 habis rendang aku dorg bantai). But these peope hate us. Why? Because we're the Islamic, small and 3rd world country. Bab small country tu memang buat aku bengang. Bingai punya mat saleh. Sayang aku xde glob kat umah masa tu. Nak je aku tunjuk comparison Malaysia dgn Singapore. Mujur kaki aku pendek, nak flying kick tak sampai. Kebanyakan member husband aku tu semua kepala nak cecah siling umah. Aku ni paras2 pusat dorg je. Hukhukk sabar jela aku.

It's simple, the reason British people are called racist toward immigrants to the UK, is because nobody choosing to live among us respects our culture and customs. Nothing to do with skin colour, religion or anything else, just a casual disregard for British ways. That's why we have been made to feel ashamed of our own heritage.

As an expat in Malaysia for 12 yrs. I find Malaysians in general to be friendly and polite. However, if Im being honest, local Chinese/Indians are friendlier than the Malay Malay. One example is when it comes to English, "some" will frown and make face when you are unable to communicate in Bahasa. This is common in fastfoods, malls. Which I find it weird coz these restaurants or shops should anticipate to have foreigner customers. But again, overall, Malaysians are good and honest people.

I agree that foreigners who lived her longer from Bangladesh,Rohingya etc gets different treatment but there are other issues such as legality of entry and generalization from Msians who are racists or people who have bad experience with them. For tourists tho it's completely different, they are guests and will be treated as such. If you all watch more travel interviews in SEA foreigners do point out Msia is really chill and they feel a sense of belonging here compared to other SEA country as we've everyone from everywhere. We should however treat our foreign workers better and cherish our multi cultural country

If they receive stares, it is definitely not from Malaysians but from foreign workers (Bangladesh or Indonesian) who work in big cities like Kuala Lumpur. Most Malaysians don't stay in Kuala Lumpur; rather, they stay in suburbs as there are more lively places outside Kuala Lumpur and just go a big city to work. So dont worry to all foreigners tourist you are always welcome in Malaysia.

@@tartanpimpernel6358 Malaysia belongs to the Malays with 9 Malay Raja.. Poor people from india, bangladesh, china, etc came to work in estates and tin mines. These contract workers don't want to go back to back, that is the problem. If they go back there will be no race problem

I haven't been to SE Asia, but I've been to Taiwan, and over there it was a completely different story. You definitely got treated better if you were an Asian. They made it so obvious that they view non-Asians as untrustworthy and inferior to them, and therefore unworthy of the same treatment. Like one example is, I could stand in line for something, and they would take care of the Asian customers first, even if I was in line before them. And Asians were able to get away with things that non-Asians would get scolded for. If I started listing everything, this comment would be like a page long, but the gist of it is, that Asians in general were more respected and trusted then non-Asians. It's like, if you don't look like them, talk like them and conform to their customs and virtues, they look down on you. As a non-Asian, I honestly did not feel comfortable there, and would not go back to another East Asian country for the reason. SE Asia on the other hand, I'm somewhat more open to, and have been seriously looking into it, but I still don't think I'd feel super comfortable there. Malaysia however, I literally had zero interest in until a week ago, but I didn't know it had such a diverse array of attractions. And the country is very multicultural and far more modern then other countries in the region, so I don't think I'd feel as uncomfortable there. THAT being said, you should interview other Malaysians, especially Indians, and you might get very different answers.
