Do Natural Dyes Fade? Try this Simple Test

Dyeing with plants, flowers, or mushrooms can create a rainbow of vibrant color. However, it's important to test that color to see how it will last over time due to exposure to light and water. Some natural dyes fix fantastically to the fiber, some fade or wash out quickly.
When creating your own natural dye experiments, try this simple test to see how it will last over time when exposed to the sun. Then plan your projects accordingly.

I love your jumper ! I think it maybe the same as I was hoping to knit following my recent attempts at naturally dyeing yarn using onions and avocado. Your explanations are so clear. Thank you 🙏 I will have to try your tip with the card for avocado or do you have any advise ?

my tumeric experiements didn't even survive 2 weeks of summer sun :D but yes, I did know and therefor indeed nobody was upset

Did you add any mordant to these examples? I am wondering if mordant will effect light fastness?

I mordant all my wool before dyeing, except indigo. Great question- mordanting your wool before dyeing is one of the best ways to improve the bond between dye and fiber.

Myra do you believe that your natural dyes could be applied to a porous wood like oak or ash and achieve an even stain across the wood grain. Wood fibers can’t be terribly much different from a cotton or wool fiber

It is possible to stain wood materials with natural dyes. When I weaved baskets I would dye the basketry cane with different types of mushrooms. It all depends on the type of dye and of course, how you prepare your material to absorb the dye.

I see onion skins hold on to color! Do marigolds resist fading too?

I’ve had a good experience dyeing with them and they seem to keep their color well over time. I’m also very careful to store the dyed fiber in the dark and don’t wash often. That does help.
