Usually I totally agree with what you show and say - but sorry, this time I don't understand at all what you are demonstrating and don't agree at all with your rating. So, just my 2ct of other opinion ... ;-) I own since quite some while two of these stoves (both purchased on Amazon as iBasingo stoves), one for use in Europe and one for my travels in Asia, and I'm super happy with both of them. If I calculated right, I used them so far in total around 200 times for cooking meals. And I had never any problems. I have a lot of other stoves, mainly alcohol and wood stoves and some Esbit stoves, many self made and a lot of purchased ones, but currently this model is for sure my most used stove. I do generally use 99,98% Ethanol as fuel (what generates as per my experience and also theoretically most heat you can get out from an alcohol stove) and had never that flame pattern or sputtering you show here. Maybe you should try it again with any other fuel. And no idea whether you got a defective or clogged piece of burner or use the wrong alcohol for it, but my two stoves burn both like hell, start fast and show absolutely fine flames, have a very even flame pattern and provide great heat, just the right for my cooking purposes - means I do not simply boil water but use them for real cooking, always preparing complete and fresh meals. I do that outdoors as well as indoors (e.g. in hotel rooms) and it works great. So far I used these stoves between sea level and about 1.500m ASL and in temperature ranges between 3° and 42° Celsius, no problems at all. To put the lid in from the side is neither really possible nor meant to be the right use of the lid, just put it in from front as you finally demonstrated, and everything is easy-peacy going and totally fine. This lid is just meant to suffocate the flames, it is neither a simmer ring nor a closing lid which would enable you to keep remaining alcohol inside the burner during transport. No idea what is for you wrong with that concept, many other alcohol stoves come even totally without lid, and simmering works mainly with Trangia types of stoves but not with other models. If you want to simmer, just get you the right stove for that purpose, but don't use that as negative point for a stove cover which is not even meant to be used for that purpose and naturally doesn't support it. The stand is perfect, doesn't wobble and allows also bigger pots and pans to stand without tipping. I used also Hexamine tablets in the stand, works fine and can be recommended, and tried burning wood, what requires either very small pieces or long sticks which you put it from the side, but both variants end up in having quite some work since you have to permanently watch the flame and reload, so I would not recommend it for real cooking purpose (yet boiling water works, as you don't have to stir or so). I've even used the stand as rechaud by putting a little tea candle inside and the pot on top, worked also fine. Finally I used the stand also for some of my DIY beercan stoves in order to check that out, and that worked fantastically. The thing is, this stand is simply perfect for larger diameter pots or pans, which I definitely need and use for cooking. As I have different sizes of beercan stoves made from different cans I can use whatever I think is right in that stand and have the flame I want under the pot I want. So if you are not happy with the stove, just use any other stove which is per your experience or definition better in this stand, and be happy. That said: I have many stoves and stands and like to experiment with and use all of them every once in a while, and this is maybe not the best stove/stand combination ever, but to tell, never to buy or try it, does not fit at all to my experience. I really like these sets, and have nothing to complain about them.

Contrary to the majority here, I got good results with this stove. My room temperature was 32C (89.6F), indoors, with no wind. I poured in 1oz (40ml) of 95% ethanol, lit it, placed two cups (500ml) of water in a stainless steel, thin walled Hario goose neck kettle (meant for pour over coffee), with the lid off, onto the stove and started the timer. The water came to a rolling boil in 5min 20sec, with plenty of fuel left. The flames from the outer ring of jets were developed while the inner ring had no flames. I have no idea why this stove worked for me.

I had just purchased this same stove to use as a backup burner in a small Lixada hinged twig stove. After seeing this video, I did my own test. I placed the burner in the alcohol adapter in the Lixada stove, filled with carefully measured 1floz of denatured alcohol and got a full rolling boil of 16 oz of 65 degF tap water indoors in 8 1/2 min. Full burn time was 10 1/2 min. Good blue flames. In the Lixada, the burner sits a little lower than the optimum 1 inch from the bottom of the pot, but the burner certainly seemed to perform adequately. Perhaps there is something about the windscreen that came with the stove tested that chokes off oxygen. It seems that there is not much side clearance between burner and windscreen. I suggest rerunning a test of the burner using a different potstand/windscreen, or using a different burner in the BV windscreen to determine which is the real problem.

Interesting, I guess any stove can be optimized but you'd figure buying the package that comes with the windscreen would be optimized already. I think something Like the TOAKS Titanium Siphon stove that produces a vortex of flame seems very efficient in the wind. With the TOAKS TiStand wind screen on that one you can boil two cups of water with half oz of fuel which is almost twice as good as most Trangia style stoves I've seen.

That toaks stove is great, but the Evernew and Atiap titanium stoves work great in those twig stoves. And those stoves let you put the pot on directly for simmering

I've got one of those stoves, I've been using it for about a year now. I really like it. The lid isn't a simmer ring, it's a snuffer for putting the flame out. I also use the windshield on its own for burning fuel tabs. It lives permanently in my brew kit.

I prefer my steeping temp to be between 130 and 150. This performance (144°) is perfect for that. The fuel consumption ratio is an issue, however. I'd like to see the stand used as a twig stove among other things.

You flip the lid over to use it as a simmer ring. So many people don’t understand this. The flipped over lid covers the inner burn holes while leaving the outer lit/look at the recessing. Don’t know if you tried this and gotten bad results, but most people don’t flip the lid over, they keep the lid in the same orientation to snuff it out when they try to simmer and it fails miserably.

there was a constant orange flame for the entirety of the burn, not enough O2. I would say try it with a homemade windscreen with holes in it but the burner itself is flawed so I expect there wouldn't be much of a difference. Thanks for the review.

I have been using that stove and stand for about a year now. I pair it with a 750ml Boundless Voyage pot / French Press. I really like mine. No problems getting water to a boil, but it is a bit of a fuel hog. I have never tried using the “lid” as a simmer ring, only as a sniffer. But I normally just let the stove burn out. Not easy to reclaim unburnt fuel. I figure that’s why it goes through so much.

Went back and ran the Boundless Voyage comparing it to the Trangia Mini and the Esbit 3 piece. The Boundless voyage and Esbit brought 2 cups of water to a boil at about the same time, the Trangia was the fastest of the 3 and was the most economical with fuel, the Boundless voyage flaming out first, the Esbit some 3 minutes later and the Trangia lasting about another minute. Not detailed like your tests are, but it did show the Trangia system to be superior.

I have used a lot of commercial alcohol stoves and have made and used even more. I’ve never seen anything perform this poorly. You could literally cut a cam at 2 inches high, pour some alcohol in it, light it, place it over the flame with a pot stand, and it would perform better than this stove. Sad!

My latest stove kit/assembly has elements of old trusty goodness and some new, but it just works for me. I use the stand/windscreen for the Toaks Siphon stove, but with my Zelph Fancee Feest stove and my Toaks 750ml pot. I put the pot directly on the stove, and the windscreen fits perfectly around that stack, even with the pot handles out. Great at blocking wind and fits in the stuff sack with the pot (which everything else nests into).

I have this stove and have tried modifying it but without much success. As others have pointed out, the ventilation holes on the bottom are blocked by the burner. I tried raising the burner slightly by fitting three 2mm-high bolts in three of the holes. The flame got maybe a bit less blue but was still too yellow, indicating insufficient oxygen. The burn behaviour was very similar when it was free-standing, outside the windshield. Looking closer at my burner (and also in your video) I noticed that the inner ring of jets don't seem to light at all. I suspect that although they are pushing out alcohol vapour, this is just getting burned as part of the central, yellow flame.

I bought two stainless steel units that looked similar to that. A design loosely based on a Trangia. It burns about as well as yours did, both of them never really hit full bloom unless I shook the stove slightly. I feel they use a fibre stuffing in the interior that just doesn’t allow the vapour to flow properly. I can’t believe they would market that as a stove in titanium. I may tear apart that cheap stainless steel one to see if it has suspect packing material. I’ve made some home built ones with fibreglass as a packing material that work very well. Cheers!

This stove is actually better off by itself outside of the windshield because it's not getting enough oxygen to fullybloom. I saw this same stove used on a Firebox Nano and it performed phenomenally superb fully bloomed and hot and boiled 250ml. Of water under 6 minutes. Or!?....you can just use an empty fancy feast cat food can for only $.80 cents which operates the same exact thing!

Between 130 and 150 is where I like my water to be for steeping tea and coffee. So, it seems that controlling the amount of fuel would be perfect for dialing in one's perfect cup, since the water didn't reach a boil on one Oz. Failing to reach a boil is not a total loss. I'd categorize it as purposeful. What is the total fuel capacity? How long does it burn from full? And, what temp does it reach from full. I would like to consider those factors before writing it off as only good for making a morning brew. Obviously, if you could swap out the burners, according to your intended purpose, it would be a good cooking system to build off of. I would really like to see how well the stand operates as a basic twig stove, Ernie. Could you demonstrate that? Is it viable as a twig stove?

@raymondparker184 Жыл бұрын
Regarding your cracked Trangia burner, you can try to repair it with silver solder if the crack isn't too large and is accessible. If not, they are relatively inexpensive to replace with a brand new unit. I've owned numerous Trangia burners over the years, and only had one crack on me - an old surplus military Svea model, not the newer civilian Trangia. To be honest, the crack may have (probably was) already started when I got it, but it did grow a little worse before I caught it. Thankfully it was in a location where I could properly heat it enough to get really good solder penetration, and it has served me well ever since - about twenty years now. Cracks can happen, but they can usually be repaired to like new condition as well.

@@raymondparker184 I have one cracked, one unused & one I soldered with plumbing solder & that actually worked well. I have some silver solder & flux but wanted the try plumbing solder, it hasn’t had any issues with the heat & the burner has no cracks. Note on heat, I burn all the fuel out of the stove quite often & use the simmer ring a lot so that’s why I would like Trangia to make a new version. My Favourite combo is a FireBox 🔥Nano & Trangia burner. Not a big fan of leaving fuel in the Trangia so burner the cracked one dry & putting it away is what normally do, doesn’t really bother me.

@@alf3553 Just like you, I never carry or store fuel in any of my Trangia burners - I figure they can't leak if there's no fuel in them. I have very limited experience with titanium, so I can't really speak to that. I really like the Trangia platform, which I have the most experience with of any alcohol system. I also have and use several of the Pathfinder stainless burners (both sizes) which are a bit slower but built like tanks. I've yet to have a problem with any of them. Another note regarding the brass Trangia burners in my collection, I have proactively silver soldered the seam where they are pressed together to hopefully stop any potential alcohol leakage when they are loaded and in use. Might be overkill on my part, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Again, I don't store or transport my Trangias with alcohol, so this only comes into play when in actual use. So far, so good.

Wow. Impressively bad burner. I kinda like the stand because it can burn wood. I like to carry a stand that can burn wood in case I run out of alcohol. Since it would be hard to recover fuel from this, the snuffer is of questionable use. i was thinking I'd cut a big hole in the middle of it to simmer... but then you showed how low powered this was and it seemed to be in permanent simmer mode. Do they sell just the stand? Will it hold a trangia or the evernew? I've made many alcohol stoves, but none were this inefficient, although some were useless for other reasons. @robertcwillifordii2630
@robertcwillifordii2630 Жыл бұрын
Imma say no, for burners. I've made several stainless steel burners. They take too much more time and fuel to heat up to a bloom and burn with lower heat output than any of the other aluminum waterbottle burners I've ever made. In my testing, I have been able to determine that you want a thermally conductive material for the burner to efficiently transfer the flame's heat to a pot of water. That is why the thinnest aluminum capillary hoop stoves are so good at boiling water and being fuel efficient. You do want a thick windscreen, to retain radiant heat, throughout the burn, though. That helps. Always use a windscreen with alcohol burners to maximize fuel your efficiency.

You can leave snuffer and the lid at home, then it is lighter. More similar to evernew witch dont have them. You can make UL snuffer from beer can.

Would the pot stand work with other alcohol burners?

I've noticed a big difference over the years between stuff designed in America and made in China and stuff designed in China and made in China. Sometimes even being copycats they still can't get it right.

Excellent review of a horrible design. It’s immediately apparent it’s starved for oxygen, at least that’s what it looks like to me. And why add a snuffer when making it into a true simmer ring is not that much more to do…sad. I hope you can send this back, I’d hate for you to have spent your own money on that! It’s not even good enough to be a paperweight! I’m a somewhat recent convert to alcohol stoves, it’s nice to sit back while the water is heating up for morning coffee and it’s just absolutely silent.

just no. so many of these stoves just don't work for really camping. if you are going primitive then a folding wood burning stove saves the ounces so you save pounds. if you have a base camp and more people the classic Coleman white fuel stove is a better bet. if you are looking at a bug out set up then fuel tabs are you way to go. i keep seeing videos of these stoves and just don't see why people get them. they do nothing better than other options.

I’m a recent convert to the alcohol stove, I never saw the point either but I was curious and acquired some military Trangia models cheap. I like them. I’ve since gotten the civilian Trangia and the Pathfinder. The burn a variety of easily available and cheap fuels, but to me the best thing about them is they make absolutely zero noise and little odor. You can’t cook a stew and simmer it for an hour but then that’s not what they’re designed for. So depending on your style of cooking it could be an option, especially if being stealthy is part of it.

What's the point of holes in the windscreen bottom for ventilation if the burner covers them? Typical copied tech. Take different ideas from other products and put them together in one, without any thought on how it's supposed to function. Seen it before in other products.

The holes are to provide air flow when using it in its secondary role as a twig burning stove.

@@ruairidhalexander7631 with a few dimples it could have provided airflow to the burner. The way it burns looks like low air flow to me, imo:)

Yup…bad design as a combo! The stand seems to be nice for pot size…but the stove itself sits too deep inside the stand for it to have sufficient heat to boil water…the “summer ring”,IF advertised as such and not just a top for extinguishing…is horrible!

I wonder if the stove would work better if it's not in the pot stand. Looks like they don't work together very well.

@@KevinSmith-os5yz It works a lot better. Ive got that stove, without a stand. Using it with DIY stand and woodstove (with option to place alcohol stove inside) and works fine. Makes 2 cups in 6-7 mins. 600 ml in 12,5 min.
