Thank you so much. You have enlightened me in so many ways. I love your thinking process, speaking and explaining things. Im a casual Nintendo collector and gamer. Not investor. I took your advice for writing down my collection goal, eg acquire all original black box in CIB NM condition, acquire all Mario/Zelda CIB NM ever released etc. Born in 1978 and due to childhood issues, (my dad died in a car accident when i was 3 and i developed childhood depression) Nintendo was my way of escaping from reality and gave me the necessary peace to grow. Anyways just wanted to thank you and please keep it up. Im literaly binge viewing all your content cause im gonna have a spinal cord operation so im on my couch accepting and digesting your work. Another thing to think about is the cost of inflation, If you bought a 50 dollar game in the 1990's and now it's worth 100 bucks with the devaluation of roughly 50 % loss of purchasing power since the 1990's it means you are exactly even. That's a horrible investment to break even 30 years later, it means the majority of all games aren't even keeping up with inflation, most people don't even think like that, but it's something that is very real. I agree with you it's much better to do faster flips or other flips that you don't have to wait years or even decades to make a profit from. I resell full time, it's much better to flip as fast as you can and make that money quicker to do more flips, and maybe keeping longer term flips minimal so your capital isn't tied up.

Hello. Most people who have nostalgia for the PS2. They buy a PS2 with the 5 games that he/she used to own as a child plus 5 more that that he/she wants to play that they have never played before because they like the look of them. Rarely unless someone is either a reseller or a speculator, wants 100, 1,000 or the whole set of over 4,000 PS2 games. A normal person doesn't want PAL, NTSC U/C and NTSC J, EA classics, platinum, UK, Spanish, Italian, North American, Japanese and other country cover varieties. Also you only need to have 1 PS2, you don't need a collection of different varieties of PS2 consoles, fat, slim, different colours varieties, test system, PAL, NTSC U/C, NTSC J, completion giveaways and other types. It's also the same for other accessories such as controllers, buzzers, add-ons and memory cards. Most people only want 10 games or so. Not even 20 games. Most people don't want a massive collection of video games. You can only play 1 game at a time.

That guy buying two brand new copies of luigis mansion was hilarious. Not just because of what he's speculating on but the copy he bought to play was really just paying a premium for the privilege of removing the cellophane. Because if he waits a few weeks he could get a second hand copy for nearly half price. Where I live Nintendo games are rarely sealed so there's not much opportunity to acquire sealed new games but oi will heard of people here doing that same thing of buying one copy to play, one to remain untouched and in some cases one to sell.

If you intend to keep the sealed copy for your own pleasure and not as an investment then it makes sense, but if you have any intention of reselling it then you are not wise. If however you can get them cheap like I did when BJs wholesale stopped selling games years ago and clearanced everything for $5-$10 for sealed wii u and 3ds games then it makes sense.

I have around 6-7 sealed nintendo Nes games including renegade, gauntlet, gauntlet 2 and several others... granted they are not mario, zelda, metroid, etc, but I still think they have some value, especially due to the recent influx of wata and heritage speculators. My question is this.... should I hold onto these for a little while longer to let the market mature more or sell them now via heritage or ebay. Please keep in mind I paid around $60 for all of them so around $10 each a few years ago. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Go to pricecharting.com and you can see a chart of the prices of games. Renegade peaked back in 2012 at $460, plummeted to roughly $160 in 2014, then started coming back up. It was $320 a few months ago, but has slowly started creeping down in price. You may still be able to get $350 out of it if you sell it now, but if you wait, it may be worth a lot less. For Gauntlet, that depends on if it's Licensed (Grey Cart) or Unlicensed (Black Cart). The Licensed one (which says "licensed by Nintendo" on the bottom right of the box) has plateaued at about $75, whereas the Unlicensed one (which says "Not designed, manufactured, sponsored, or endorsed by Nintendo" on the bottom right) is continuing to rise in value; it has yet to peak or plateau. Gauntlet II peaked back in 2014 at $100, it's worth about $60 now, but is slowly coming back up. I guess it depends on how much or little of a profit you are willing to take on each one.

Very informative, again. I also think the video game market is not a good long-term investment and is overhyped at the moment. If we consider games like Pokemons for Nintendo DS which are selling for relatively high prices in Germany (some over 100€). There are Millions of copies in the wild (and tons on ebay) in boxes that stay pristine for say 50 years (unlike GBA for example) and still they are selling for more than double the original retail price. It would be really speculative to buy them now in larger quantities. I bet you can get them back in 20 years for lower than now because most people will simply emulate the games...

Im a collector him: buying one Sealed for the collection and 1 to open and play. I do this at the time the Games are falling in price(im a bargain hunter if you want to call it that way). I have alot of double Games (1 sealed/open each) and payed less then full price for both together (did this alot with Wii U and 3DS Games and most of the Sealed Games only costs me 10-15€ each) So i get the part he means about, buying 2 Sealed Copies on release, but the prices will fall for sure (unless it's truly limited in some kind) And if you ask me: yes it's strange, but i collecting sealed Games since 2005 and own Sealed GC Games that did costs me 5-30€ (depending on the Game of course) and having most of them double, because i did buy GC Games on release to play them. So the funny thing is, that my Sealed copies was way cheaper as my used Games^^ And no, i don't do collect Sealed stuff to make a buck on it (maybe a few, if i actually need some money) because i still have all my Sealed GC Games even after over 15 years. :) The sad thing is: if it comes to grading a Game, there are alot even more dumb ppl out there with to much money and actually pay that higher price for a graded copy. So there's a reason for ppl buying to let grade and sell it after that (something like scalpers do) it's always about the Money, and mostly money alone.

Are there any online clearance/distribution companies that are auctioning off, or otherwise selling early PS2/PS1 games for cheap? I heard him mention about how Sears and other mainstream retail outlets had blowout sales in the early 00's for the original Playstation and Xbox console games. It really makes you wonder if there are still lowkey clearance/distribution companies selling the same types of sealed early 00s games under the radar.

I dont think current gen games will have nearly the value as older gen games since digital sales account for about half of game sales now. There will be less attachment for physical copies for the younger generation who decide to revisit these games when they're older and will likely rebuy digital again.
@SupraViperhead
@SupraViperhead 4 жыл бұрын
If they are available in digital format, sure. But what if they aren't on any servers? The only way you could play them again is to buy them physically and with digital sales accounting for half of all sales, the availability of the physical media will be limited. But I agree that they DEFINITELY won't have the same value as what some NES and SNES games currently have and keeping a copy of God of War for the PS4 sealed in the hopes that in 30 years, you could make an additional $10-$15 is just ridiculous.

What are your thoughts on speculating limited edition "New 3DS XL consoles"?
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 4 жыл бұрын
Horrible idea with few exceptions. Case in point, I preordered a Pokemon 20th Anniversary console from GameStop, back when it was released, and paid $200. I then sent it to VGA where it was graded a VGA 90. I had close to $400 invested in it, due to the grading and cost of the system. Sold it in December 2019 for about $1100, but that was an exception, not a rule. Most other systems, aren’t worth grading.

@@ReservedInvestments Okay interesting, I'll be more specific then. You're right I was very careful in choosing which consoles to speculate and they are as follows: 1. Pokemon 20th Anniversary console from GameStop. 2. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate edition (gamestop exlusive) I also built a bundle around this console which includes various rare monster hunter 4 capcom collectors items (many imported) - paid 300 CAD for this and there is currently only one listing on eBay for 750 3. Nintendo 3DS XL SNES Edition - Also have this built around an extremely rare set of nintendo SNES /mario kart themed items ex. rare fingerless nintendo promo mario kart leather racing gloves given out in 1992, as well as a mint condition SNES in complete original packaging and plastics. and more 4. 3DS XL Pickachu edition - currently one with a high grade on eBay for 1400 USD 5. Nintendo 3DS XL-Pokémon Sun & Moon Edition - this is also built around a collectors bundle which has all items related to game ex strategy guide, poke watch etc... Note: All these items are Brand new and are going on eBay for 2x even 3x what I paid for them currently. Let me know if you have an email you seem really knowledgeable about this stuff and it would be great to converse further :)

Reserved Investments I bought these for retail prices? You’re not making a lot of sense... the (discontinued) Nintendo 3DS XL consoles will never go for less than they were originally purchased for lol. I dunno where you get the idea that a NEW console won’t resell for higher than retail price on the secondary market 5-10 years after production finished on these limited runs. I think you’re mistaken and eBay sales would agree with me. Although I’m open to actual counter arguments as to why you think a new console would go for less 5-10 years after it was discontinued. You also didn’t address the fact that my consoles are built around rare collectors bundles?

WATA differentiates production timeframe as “early, late, etc.” - so, around the game retirement date, the stores are likely to be discounting the late production run copies, and the early production run copies will be long gone. On a 30 year timeframe, a $20 cost basis vs a $40 cost basis might not matter all that much ... since at the end of the day, it’s the absolute dollar profit that matters, not the relative / ROI (percent increase number) that matters - when overhead cost far outweighs the cost for the item itself. Also, there are pieces of currency printed in the hundreds of thousands of units, or even millions of units, that go for five figures or more in very high grade condition. So, if the game is sufficiently key, and the grade is sufficiently high (ex: full mint or gem mint), I don’t see why the game can’t do the same.
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 3 жыл бұрын
You’re comparing pop culture to historic artifacts. The two markets don’t work the same way, first of all. Second, not a lot of early currency survived. Mass produced video games today are being hoarded. Your analysis is incorrect as a result. I’ve covered this in my fundamental videos. Watch them.

Here's my take: 1. Looking for sealed games is pointless. If you want to play them, you're going to open them and if you're just planing on using them as decor, they look just as good without the cellophane. 2. If you plan on playing a 1st Party Nintendo game (and New Condition is a must), you're no better off waiting than you are buying it on Launch Day. If you want to be able to sell it for what you bought it for or potentially more, buy the Special/Collectors edition if they release one, otherwise expect to be able to sell it for 20% less. If you don't intend on playing, wait for about 3 years and you can save MAYBE 20%.

Poindexter... fantastic. 😂 I disagree in one regard. Say you're simply collecting to build up some extra cash for, like a Christmas gift fund. Say $300-700, by December: it's totally doable with new releases. And that's because of all of the limited production companies out now. It's not just Limited Run anymore - Special Reserve, IAm8Bit, Fangamer, Strictly Limited, Red Art, Piko Interacrive, etc. It's incredibly hard to keep up with all limited preorders now. So if you snag Shantae or Grandia Collection or Clockwork Aquario, chances are someone missed that preorder due to the variety of limited production physical game companies and the small quantities produced. And you can sell a $30-50 copy of Blasphemous for $110 or higher. Again, this is more hobby collecting and reselling. But (1.) it's fun, and (2.) it's nice having some extra cash in the several hundred dollar range. I love the videos!

@@ReservedInvestments With future of gaming becoming more and more digital, with the pricing of games hitting $70, being almost every game becoming controversial, these things only help add more value especially if the game ends up being what's expected of it. Keanu Reeves is in it too. All these things help it in value. Super Mario Bros didn't just sell 1 million alone because it was a fun game. It had arguably the greatest console, childhood ect. 30 years from now hands on a sealed copy with not many out there because like I said before more and more people get there games digitally, that only makes it more sought after. Someone who really enjoyed that game will pay the numbers too.

Yikes, Timmys really thought 3rd party grading is a scam? Shocking to hear. Of course, it CAN increase the prices of CERTAIN collectibles... if there's an actual demand for graded items! Or it can just be a huge waste of money if there's no demand.

switch is not collectible for the most part. I'm sure he was thinking "first print". But everyone is doing it now. The most recent of anything that is collectible is wii u, and really only a few select titles, and the cardboard limited editions w amiibos, etc. That's it. No ps4's, no xbox 1s, not even really 3ds, vita, 360, ps3 etc. I'm not in those. Gamecube is about as new as I go w this stuff, and eve those are faked really well these days, and the dvd style cases are just too plentiful in good shape.
@ReservedInvestments

You are correct and incorrect here. People will pay a premium for certain Switch games even after they are out of print. The problem is twofold, and this is where you are 💯 correct: Way too many people are hoarding this stuff long term, and the opportunity cost of holding this stuff long term for investment is far too great.
@hw5091

@@ReservedInvestments yeah that was going to be my retort when I saw your replies first sentence. Opportunity cost is just too high. Then there's storage and possibility of getting ruined, stolen, etc. I don't like it. Put the cash in the Spyder in that case. I still do it for fun, but only older stuff really. Right now is actually a decent time to buy sealed stuff from the 90s n early 00s, as the crash has soured a lot of people. But I'm only buying deals to where I could sell them tomorrow and at least break even w fees n shipping, and likely still make a few pennies. But just very select titles. The days of people buying secondary titles or primary titles in sub par condition and flipping them 90 days later for a 50% profit are over. You know when used cars go up 30%, that there's a problem.

That was funny the 2 copies lol. Like If he really wanted to make money from that, then that’ll be like 15 years to turn a profit. But idk why buy it so early, when the switch stops selling and switch games are dirt cheap because the new Nintendo console comes out then that’s the ti e to buy new cheap games. Weird

@@ReservedInvestments I wholly understand opportunity cost. I guess my comment is more about optimization. Not every person is looking solely at maximum optimization. Otherwise they would very likely not be investing in collectibles whatsoever. Genuinely no disrespect whatsoever, but it feels like a very classic boomer comment to say "Why would you buy X Y Z collectible when you could put that money in the stock market instead!?" Like... because then I don't get the same enjoyment out of it. I dunno. Just a comment on how not every person is looking to maximize every $10 or $20 out of investing is all.

Also, when you say they wont be as valuable as vintage sealed games, that is very true, but one day the new games WILL be vintage, and games like nes etc will be ANTIQUE, its all relative. All the same shit happened before our generation and the one before existed. Look at the rocking horse boom that happened decades ago. A lot of what you are saying is true. But you never know what will happen concerning particular items, most people are educated enough to know how to collect, but the fact so many are doing it will preserve a lot of weird things into the future, leading to a better scenario than not knowing at the time and than having to search for all those 'gems' after the fact, like the nes.
