Definitely feed it after dethatching it. Like to think of it as a workout, after you hit the gym you need the protein to recover. Your lawn needs the nitrogen.

You want to do it when your lawn is actively growing. I will say fall is better only because you will have less weeds to worry about.

Thanks for the video. I just started do this for the first time today, using a leaf rake. I wasn't aware that they had machines for that. Although I have heard that some people find it relaxing to do the whole yard by hand. I'm hoping these machines come in electric. I don't want another gas engine to get started in the spring. Although I never do protein drinks after a workout, I will fertilize my lawn after the thatching. Then it will really look cut.

They make some good battery or plug in dethatchers you can snag one on Amazon. I like these ones cause you get the dethatch and scarifier amzn.to/3W1jZ5c

Hey! It's around 55 or so during the day right now here, and starting to get chilly at night, 38-45 or so in the northeast. Is it too late to dethatch?? Should i just wait for the spring?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 8 ай бұрын
If your lawn is aggressively growing you can dethatch if you have noticed your lawn is slowing down on the growth I would wait till spring. You don’t want to dethatch and not give the lawn the ability to recover.

Should I dethatch every year or every other year depending on conditions? Thanks
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 9 ай бұрын
It truly depends on how you manage your lawn. If you never bag your clippings and you have a lawn like a KBG that’s has the rhizomes i would do it yearly. If you have a PRG and bag all your clippings you can get away with every other year or so as necessary. If you start to see your lawn isn’t getting nutrients that should be your tell that you need to give it some attention.

This is great content. Kudos! If you lay down pre-emergent every spring when soil temp avg around 53F when can you dethatch without ruining that layer of pre-emergent?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 3 ай бұрын
Once you break that soil level your pre emergent is no longer good so you have to time everything well and plan it out since you can only put that pre emergent down so many times a year. The pre emergent lasts about 3 months so if you wanted you could put down that first application and then 3 months do a dethatch and aeration too if you wanted and do another application of pre emergent after.

What about Milogranite fertilizer after de thatching? And can you put fertilizer and overseed at the same time?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 2 ай бұрын
You can use milo but in all honestly it’s not my favorite. I feel like the cost vs nitrogen is just not there and you want something that’s going to be a little more quick release to help with the stress you just put the lawn through. Urea based fertilizer is the best option. Personally I like turf Titan lawn commander. turftitanbrands.com/products/lawn-commander?sca_ref=3794868.U6QV0L4C14 Plenty of urea and will help the lawn bounce back. The link above will save you 10% if you use it but like I said any urea nitrogen fertilizer is the best option.

@@treasuredLawnyea but how does that integrate with pre emergent? Can’t reseed when you just put down or will put down pre emergent ?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn Ай бұрын
@@johnwhite2576if you had put down pre emergent the dethatching process will break that and essentially remove it. You’re able to spray a preemergent after dethatching but honestly if your lawn is nice and thick you may not need it. If you want to throw seed down you definitely cannot use preemergent though since it will keep the seeds from germinating.

I have another question, sorry. I know you say to cut it first the dethatch, but it is early spring in New England, so do I still need to cut lawn before dethatching ?
@treasuredLawn

What fertilizer do you recommend for beginners and first time de thatcher?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 22 күн бұрын
Lots of good products out there! I like the turf titan products they are easy to use and have a lot of great nutrients for the lawn especially after a dethatch. You can get them with the hose ends bottles and it’s super easy to apply. Straight urea or ammonium sulfate is also a great option as well but you will need to make sure you’re putting down the right rates. The stuff is potent!
@eduardo13405
@eduardo13405 22 күн бұрын
How often does one need to fertilize ? Does time of the year matter? Beginner here the more videos I see the more it gets a little overwhelming as far as aerating, pre emergent, reseeding, detaching 😂
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 22 күн бұрын
@@eduardo13405 I completely understand how it gets overwhelming! I was where you were a few years ago! Each fertilizer will tell you how often applications will last usually they can range anywhere from 4-6 weeks per application. I try my best to time up big projects like seedings, dethatch and aerating with that schedule. You can also do half applications which help in these situations. I use TurfTitan products so stuff like their 6 step bundle is great because it gives you everything you need for all your situations as well as a good calendar on when to apply the products on a regular schedule. turftitanbrands.com/products/6-step-bundle?sca_ref=3794868.U6QV0L4C14 Now you definitely don’t have to buy these. Anytime you do work like dethatch and aeration the one nutrient you need more than anything is nitrogen so a heavier nitrogen based product applied at the recommended amount will do you solid!

When to spray for weeds in this process?
@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn Ай бұрын
If you have weeds and want to spray them I would do it before the dethatch maybe a week or two before this will give time for the weeds to die out and when you dethatch them it will remove those weeds for you. After the dethatch make sure to feed the lawn and even overseed to ensure you have a nice thick lawn where weeds will be unable to penetrate the soil.

@treasuredLawn
@treasuredLawn 2 ай бұрын
@@mrs.danamcbrearty9373 no this is still far too early to do a dethatch in my opinion. You want it to be actively growing and if you can avoid doing it in the spring I would only because it could give you some weeds you’ll need to deal with after.
