Күн бұрынThese are the biggest misconceptions that people have about moving to Indiana. I've lived in Indiana for 30+ years and I can help you avoid some of the mistakes people make. You should know this stuff before you even start looking at real estate. Moving to Indiana is a HUGE undertaking for most people, and I'm here to help.
The biggest mistakes people make when moving to Indiana:
1. Cost of Living - It's lower than the national average, but with a caveat.
2. Weather - If you don't like all 4 seasons then Indiana is not for you.
3. Politics - It can be tough as a Democrat in a mostly Republican state.
4. Healthy Living - Hoosiers love fast and fried food, but the tides are beginning to change.

Thank you for the reply. I’m more interested in Munster since I’ll be commuting to Chicago. I want to know what the growth is like in the real estate market there, rent values as well. I would be looking into a multi unit investment property where I would potentially live in. What are the benefits of Indiana versus staying in Chicago and investing here?

Why would you want to live near Indianapolis? Northwest Indiana is a 25 minute drive to downtown Chicago. It’s fantastic. We are all diehard Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Sox, Blackhawks fans. Northwest Indiana has a much lower cost of living. Everyone from Illinois comes here to buy everything. If you have a business near the state-line, you will get a huge customer base from Illinois residents. Property taxes are way lower, gas is way cheaper, alcohol, food, etc. You can also carry concealed personal protection in Indiana, which is illegal in Illinois. It’s diverse here, friendly, overall very nice. Lake Michigan, the shoreline and great beaches are a very short drive away and wonderful during the summer. Eastern and Down-state Indiana is a whole different world compared to Northwest Indiana.

I live in California, and when I visited Indiana, it was like coming home to America. I went to Fort Wayne, and the streets were clean, and there were no homeless people. In fact, there were no people loitering because they were all at work. Democrats destroyed California, and now they are working on Colorado and Arizona. Besides the nice weather in California, there isn't much else. I can think of many reasons to move to Indiana.

Only weather? That's the worst part of California. I enjoy the food and things to do here though, though I live in the valley Id have to drive only 2 hours to go somewhere to spend the day. The weather gets old though.

Cost of living here is perfectly fine. I live 50 minutes from indy. Unless you like traffic don't move close to the capital. Rural areas are the best for families. Weather is good here. Guaranteed she's in the city and not strong enough to last elsewhere

Are you saying I live in the city? I don't live in Indy, but I do live in the suburbs. And honestly, I'd love to have a home with some land and a bunch of chickens, some bee hives, and a large garden. A girl can dream...😉

I left sunny San Diego for obvious reasons and moved to a cold part of Arizona. Now I'm old and alone and considering moving outside of Evansville, only to be in reasonable distance to family in the Chicago metro, but I'm still trying to avoid the cold. My relatives refuse to move somewhere warm, but it's no fun spending holidays alone.

I lived in Indiana for 40 years, and after 20 years of living in Phoenix, I am moving back to the Indy area for many reasons. When I waived my pros and cons of making the move, there was only one con of going back to Indiana - the winter; however, the 100+ degrees for 5 months makes it an even trade IMO.

Great video with a lot of truth in it. I've lived in MA, WA, FL, NM, IL, IA, and IN. They all have good and bad qualities. Being a blue dot here in Trumpiana, I keep my mouth shut and realize my vote means nothing here, but the people don't talk politics and are 99% super friendly and salt of the earth. We're all Americans, after all. I love the peace and quiet of rural life, but not the constant maintenance costs of an older home. Thanks for sharing your excellent info.

first of all I apologize in advance for not watching the whole video I got bored, however I had to make this statement in the comments before I go. Just about anywhere in the world your going to find pretty bad reasons to or not to live there. What ever bad there is here in Indiana for me, the good way out weigh the bad by an insane amount. Weather everywhere has goods and bad, but for me it would be stupid to leave because the politics are pretty tame compared to other areas, and in the right areas here in Indiana the people are very friendly and respectful and you will never had any problems. Quite literally the only people I have ever actually had problems with where I live is my family. I have experienced absolutory zero discrimination issues being one of the common types of people that could experience that problem. I am actually pretty terrified of the idea of living anywhere else in the USA outside of my city I currently live in. Especially with lot of the issues currently going on today. The north central areas of Indiana has some of the most amazing people!

Thank you, This is a great video. Food diversity really is bad in Fort Wayne. Exactly what we needed before moving but had to for a job. TX was much more political so appreciate the toned down politics here and weather is much better than TX but agree that it’s cold much longer than we expected. Good overview and Thank you!

Well I was surprised I moved from CA and live in Indiana. I noticed in in an modern shopping entertainment type of Mall in Avon had many empty store that was surprised by this very popular area. The economy has been rough on every place in the country Indiana isn't immune to this.

I was in the army in the 80s. Did my training at fort Ben Harrison/ chanute Air Force Base. They had a real beautiful civil war museum in downtown Indianapolis. I wonder if it's still there?

Just avoid northwest Indiana.... Meh I mean close to Chicago and lowish taxes along with lots of high paying manufacturing jobs... But one of the few liberal regions is Yuke.... Also just very ugly and depressing.

I am a floor installer currently living in northern Idaho. The flooring stores in the area use subcontractors. Do the flooring stores in Indiana use subcontractors or employee installers? Thank you for any help!

Some have installers on staff but they use subcontractors if they are overwhelmed. Buying flooring at Home Depot or Lowe's will guarantee subcontractors.

Lafayette has seen its housing prices soar. West Lafayette's Purdue admits far more students than it can house and demands freshman stay in the dorms...if renting, you compete against 5000 students, mostly used to California prices. We are gerrymandered as badly as Illinois, but their crooks sometimes get caught. It also means we are chasing Ohio rightward. At least we don't force ten year olds to become both mother and sister. Our low living expenses are balanced by low wages. Indiana wages and DC rents match badly ..and our tenant protections are weak.

I didn't say anyone is forcing people to eat fried foods, only that Indiana has a lot of fried food options, most of which are available at the Indiana State Fair. I'm making people that don't live in Indiana aware that there are some parts of Indiana that don't take healthy living seriously.

I looked at home prices in Indiana and almost cried. I live in IL and let's just say this...Indiana real estate is so cheap it's almost too good to be true. Imagine prices twice as high and property taxes 4x as high and you have IL real estate. I'm moving to Indiana.

She's right and fair. Euphemizing some stuff. Glad you mentioned the politics. It's mild mannered here, though. Nobody's in your face, but if you ask, you're gonna hear things that make you wonder if it's still the 50's. Stuff people complain about: Worst-of-all-worlds weather; suburban complacency; aspiring-to-basic attitudes; cliquish, intolerant small towns; lack of advancement opportunity and low wages if you don't live in Indy; housing prices getting ridiculous; medical, artistic, and intellectual underdevelopment; boring, more boring, and cornfields; long drive to "civilization"; expanding "Two Americas" dynamic, some towns made up entirely of churches, bars, and Dollar Generals... Stuff people like: Generally decent people who go out of their way to help someone in need (and WILL let you in in traffic!); relatively low violent crime; prices still slightly below national average; never "too crazy"; active small-town sports culture; an Applebee's within driving distance of every town, Olive Garden for special occasions... Yeah, you could do worse, but you definitely could do better. You live a small life here. Most people move away after college and move back when they have kids. They're still bored and stifled here, but at least their kids don't get shot at on the daily (unless you're in Indy). Indiana is where you go to "settle down"--when your dreams have died.

Wow with all those comments surprised you even sell any homes. If someone wants a blue county to live in try Lake and Porter counties, Indianapolis is now blue (the reason I moved out of Marion county and into Johnson county) Allen county which is Ft Wayne has been blue forever. I grew up in Lake county and it's a democrat stronghold so to the person asking about Munster Indiana...it's a nice place and easy to commute to Chicago to work. I lived in Hobart IN in 1977 and drove to the Prudential building everyday for 18 months only time it was long was when it snowed. If you are looking for good housing for decent prices, Indiana still gives more home for the buck..take a $300K home here and put it in most other states and it will be $500K not to mention property taxes in Indiana are still below the national average. Can it be boring here..oh yeah, lived here for 66 years and yes I do get bored but then again you can be bored anywhere. A state doesn't make a healthy lifestyle that is a person's job to do that. I do agree there are more healthy options here than ever and more on the horizion. I have wanted to move out from Indiana for quite some time but other states all have their pros and cons and this state seems to be like a middle ground that is affordable, people are nice, and generally the state stays out of your business. Long rant here but in the end "to each their own".

We moved to Indiana from Princeton, NJ three years ago and I have so much to say - mostly negative - about the experience. I mean - I can carry a gun around without a permit in Indiana whereas NJ's draconian gun laws would never allow that - but that's about the only positive thing I can say (though many would call that negative). Car insurance is higher, home owners insurance is the same, food, gas is higher. Clothing is more expensive (NJ does not charge sales tax on clothing where Indiana does), car registration is MUCH higher. in Indiana Utilities are the same. Home prices have skyrocketed recently to the point they offer little to no cost savings when compared to other parts of the country. Open space - forget about it. NJ and most of the Northeast has done such a wonderful job of preserving open space whereas Indiana can't build homes fast enough, using up every last inch of farm land to build cheap (in terms of build quality - not cost) homes. The variety food is just awful in Indiana....just absolutely awful if you're outside of Indianapolis. For decent bagels and bread, go to Panera Bread - that's your best option. That's it. We have found that the people in Indiana rate food based not on quality or taste but by the size of the portions. The more food they get, the better the place. Anyway, I could go on and on but it wont change anything so a my wife tells me - it's time to move on!

Can't agree on the food. Maybe if you only use Google or Yelp to search for places, you might have a hard time finding places. The best ethnic food is definitely in Bloomington. The pandemic killed off a lot of family restaurants, and county staples unfortunately.

All of those things' prices skyrocketed everywhere during/after COVID, are you sure you aren't mixing up an issue with Indiana for an issue with nationwide inflation? Of course it's going to affect certain areas more than others, and how heavily you feel the effects depends on where you live and your lifestyle. Maybe we should double check today's NJ prices vs today's IN prices? Also I second Bloomington having a wonderful variety of food places, I went there specifically so that I could try Korean food. Most of Indiana just isn't particularly ethnically diverse, so you're going to have to go to a decent sized town or city to find a wider variety of cuisine. And of course so many hole in the wall / mom n pop shops and restaurants closed down within the past few years because of COVID as well.. it's definitely muddied things up so it can be hard to tell.

Yeah public transportation is not right since the 70s it started in Northwest Indiana then move to North Central Indiana and Northeast Indiana next move back to Gary when they cut the bus service back the mayor Barnes under the the mayor's round 2010 something McDermott school at the public transportation in Hammond that is a disgrace

While the public transportation system is not ideal, there are still a lot of people that depend on it and continue to use it. I wish the US had a high-speed rail system like over in Europe that would travel between cities and states, but trying to build something like that now would cost too much. Nah this is true. We’re only 1 of 9 states that still charges a gas tax. We also took 6 billion in excess taxes and still can’t pave a road. If you move here to have kids, don’t expect them to stay either. Most of have moved out because there’s no attractions here except watching the news for all the shootings on tv. Schools are one of the worst in the country for education. Weed won’t ever be legal with our governor. If you have an electric car or hybrid you’ll be charged extra every year for your registration to make up the loss in the gas tax😂. Yeah please be honest with these people. These aren’t opinions just facts. Hope this helps
