This is very helpful advice! Big request Dave! Make a video about the work of hands, fingers without gloves. As a variant it is possible even without a club. So that you can see the path that the fingers go through, their rotation and the direction of the force. The movement of the shoulders, body and legs is also important. For many, this will significantly reduce the time in mastering the technique!

Do you have any tips for getting that shot that just FLIES? Like just an absolute laser like Auston Matthews. I feel like Ive been struggling to get that strong fast shot. I feel like its a lot weaker compared to the other guys on my team. Im 120lb and my stick is around 63 flex. Maybe I should try out a 55?
@BYGTraining
@BYGTraining Жыл бұрын
Ya know, this is a really good question and it's actually quite complicated. I intend to do multiple videos on the topic. Unfortunately, part of the answer is that the height and the size of the player shooting the puck are the two biggest variables when it comes to mph. Auston Matthews is a particularly tall guy, as is Alexander Ovechkin, as are most, if not all, of the guys you see in the fastest shot skills competition every year. I can tell you, though, that almost all of the players I've trained in my facility, including myself, have seen higher mph with stiffer sticks, so I definitely would not go down in flex if it were me. And hit the weight room hard 💪 Lastly, I would add that the mph of a shot is far less important than how quick a player is able to get that shot off. And quick release is all about technique, like I talked about in this video. A big part of why Auston Matthews shot appears so laser-like is because he's able to get it off devastatingly quick.

Build wrist strength. Tie a piece of nylon cord to the middle of a hockey stick. Depending on how tall you are, the cord should be long enough to touch the ground ( plus about 4 inches)when holding your arms straight out at shoulder height. Tie a weight to the bottom of the cord. I'd start with about two pounds if you are 120 lbs Now place both hands on the stick and hold it straight out at shoulder height. Now roll the weight up all the way to the stick by using one hand at a time. Slowly roll it back down to the floor. Repeat 10 times. If you don't have weights, then an empty one gallon water container works fine instead. Depending on your strength, fill the container about 1/4 the way up. Place a water level mark and as your wrists become stronger, add more water and mark that spot. One quart of water doesn't sound like much but trust me, you'll start feeling it around the 4th rep or so.

I think this works great for a grown man with muscles. When you’re young and skinny, as we all once were, the only way to get the stick to bend was to use the ice to bend the stick. As we get older and stronger, we are able to use the speed of our stick plus the weight of the puck to get that stick to bend. Also, consider the stick itself. We used to have sticks that were made of ash. Now they use fiberglass, and replaceable blades. Equipment has improved, to be sure. Imagine seeing Gordie Howe in his prime, playing with today’s equipage. It would be awesome.
@BYGTraining
@BYGTraining Жыл бұрын
That would be fun to watch! I'd love to see Gordie play today. I bet he'd still be a beast. So, I actually don't think stick bend is important at all, I think it's just something that happens. And you're right that it doesn't happen as much for younger kids because they're not moving their sticks as fast. But I can tell you one thing I've learned for sure in my 14 years as a full-time professional trainer - there is no quicker way to ruin a kid's shot than to tell them to push down on their stick to try to bend it.

Yeah, the stick will Flex it self like magic, give me a break for crying out loud. Think dude, most stick now come with a flex to add energy, to use it you need downward pressure. Look how any NHL player uses the Flex. McDavid starts the season with an 89+ Flex hockey stick, then will lower the flex as season bares down. This years new addition to NHL, the awesome Connor Bedard one of his many skills is his shot look when he shoots, the flex on his stick is not magic..
