Loe Bar is undoubtedly the most dangerous beach in Cornwall, despite it's alluring beauty. Join me as I explore the beach and discuss the dangers of the water, the freshwater Loe Pool and the HMS Anson memorial.

Great video, Loe Bar used to be the mouth of the River Cober which led to a harbour in Helston. However, by 700 years ago the ocean deposited enough sand & shingle in the mouth of the river to create the bar. The river itself became Loe Pool whilst cutting Helston off from the sea.

Thank you. I had read the history of the creation of the bar but unfortunately after I filmed this video.

My Father was walking along Praa sands beach one warm October morning fully clothed with my Mother & some old friends when a freak wave took him, the beach literally was washed from under him, fortunately the friends were able to save him & bring him back to shore, don’t underestimate the power of the sea !!!!!

I am local to Porthleven and know this beach very very well. Another really important warning for this beach is to also NEVER swim in Loe Pool. It is extremely deep and is full of long weeds which tangle up around you and drag you under. A year or two back saw a horse & rider almost drowned in there. So please please heed all the advice and warnings and don't even let your dogs go in the sea or in the pool - many people have drowned over the years trying to rescue their dog. 😢

@@lyndylou5367 I know about water safety. Weeds don't sense you are there and tangle you up, they will float apart if you don't struggle Also it can't be that deep if there are weeds there.I'm not saying swim there, but your statement on weeds is incorrect

@@iandavies6575 This taken from Proper Cornwall, just one snippet : Don't go swimming in Loe Pool as there's a local legend that says it 'takes someone every seven years'. Actually, there's a grain of truth to the myth as quite a few people have drowned in the water over the years and it's deemed officially dangerous to swim in due to the long, thick weeds that grow in its depths.

I live in Cornwall with my partner, I can swim but he can't and he loves the water so this video was very informative. I will watch some more of your video's and the one thing my partner loves is going to as many Cornwall beaches as often as he can but at least now, with your advice, I can steer him clear of some of them.

I walked the woodland from the estate with the kids a couple years back. Saw a parent going in to the sea with their kids despite the signs. I made it clear it wasn’t safe and the message got through, just about. They probably thought I was the local grouch. Anyone with any experience of the sea and currents would take one look at the pull there and realise it’s not for swimming. Beautiful walk nonetheless.

Yes, I first visited Loe strand in the sixties. I was alone; no-one else around and, looking at the steeply shelving wave front and lack of rollers not far beyond I thought,"What a lovely view but what a lonely place to die!" There was an obvious longshore drift driving up from the Lizard and when studied closely, the water looks threatening. Stay away from the water here; many lives have been lost, as I discovered later when I did local research. If in doubt, STAY OUT! Is a good maxim if you don't know the area.
