The reason I watch your channel, Pete, is because I feel like I'm in the room while friends are having a conversation about the music I like. Simple as that. We could all be hanging out a bar having a few beers having these discussions and it's just fun. Whether your opinion matters more than anyone else's isn't really at issue for me. I disagree with your opinions sometimes, but you always make it a point to state that these opinions are your opinions and that anyone else's opinion on the matter is just as valid as yours. You don't come off in any way that somehow you think your opinion matters more than anyone else's. It's just a welcoming place to come and hear discussion of interesting topics. Plain and simple.

Since the partial lockdowns during Covid, my music choices have been more about finding 1) old bands i never heard of 2) old bands that i had heard of but not had any new material from and 3) bands which may have similar sounds to bands i love that i never really paid attention too. This and other channels i subscribe too have a mixture of the 3 points above. This channel in particular has introduced me to so many artists i never heard of. Pete and his guests love for new music from legacy bands has also helped me to take a chance on listening to newer music. That being said, you cannot love every thing out there. listen, make your decision and enjoy what you can.

This GREAT episode bleeds into why I watch both Pete and Martin, although for different causes. I watch Pete, because I discovered a couple of years ago, that he goes in depth, and really researches and does good rankings and stuff of obscure-ish bands. I was into bands like the Michael Schenker Group and Gary More and Legs Diamond and Budgie-bands that no body in my physical environment has ever heard of. I'd come to love these bands (and others) immensely, and when I saw Pete had this depth of passion for music, going for even deeper bands like Bang and Aunt Mary and Triumvirate, I began to identify with that, cuz I put a lot of research into music and enjoy rarities like that. So now, Pete's opinion matters to me, he's worth listening to, because he's said so much that can make me trust his opinion. I by nature do not like stoner rock or doom metal, but when Pete talks about modern-day stoner or doom bands that play in the style of like late 60s psych bands, that makes me wanna check them out. I check them out, because Pete has said so many things to make this suspect suggestion now credible to some degree. Martin, on the other hand, I disagree with FREQUENTLY. BUT, he's still worth listening to, to me. He's accomplished, and he always explains himself to the fullest. He explains how he comes to his conclusions, rather than merely stating that X album is his least favorite by that band, he says why. I might disagree with him a ton of things like that, but I know his reasoning abilities are sound, and for me, that makes him worth listening to. Huge respect to both men.

He also said: "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open". If you reading about music opens your mind to new artists or bands...For example back in the mid 70's when I started seriously listening to music I bought Lillian Roxon's book Rock Encyclopedia & I can honestly say it opened me up to discovering lots of new music (and genres)

Yes, but have you ever read anything that Frank said about his own music that was memorable or better than the best critics ? I haven't, and I'm a huge fan going back to the early '70s. It's nearly always the case that almost everything a musician has to say is already there in the music. They rarely add to it - with a few honourable exceptions. How many great rock autobiographies have you read ? I can count them on one hand. I'd take a good critic nine times out of ten.

Eell, my opinions matter to me. And, for better or worse, I've always been one to let them known. But, I think it's just as fun to disagree with someone as it is to agree with them. Opinions in music and movies start conversations. And conversations can start friendships. So, in that aspect, sharing opinions matter and have a purpose in life.
@wolf1977
@wolf1977 Жыл бұрын
@@PhilBaird1 My attitude toward music critics can be summed up by this (paraphrased) comment I read a long time ago (I think it was actually made by a fellow critic): "If you find a music critic you agree with then hold onto them like grim death. If you don't agree with them then feel free to totally ignore them"... Seems to me that a lot of musicians' autobiographies give insights into the creation process & their personal lives more so than to 'explain' their music (sometimes of course those things go hand-in-hand). And a lot of times depending on the musician I just really don't care enough to read hundreds of pages, I'd rather just listen to their music. Reading a critic's opinion of an album is a different experience, maybe a little like comparing that full-length bio/autobiography to a short story. I also think a lot of musicians are too close to their own music to give 'objective' (if that's even possible for something as subjective as music) insights of their songs

What's important to me is that the people I watch and tune into, whether SOT or The Contrarians entertain me and you two and much of both channels mentioned above entertain me. I would rather be entertained by people who I don't necessarily agree with but find engaging than listen to someone I mostly agree with but doesn't have the engaging personality. You two are always enjoyable to listen to even when I don't necessarily agree. I think most sensible healthy thinking people will listen to an opinion, but however much they might respect that view (and respect is important) they will make up their own mind. Your opinions do matter to me, but ultimately I will still make up my own mind. It's all about people who I find entertaining that I will return to watch.

Popoff and Pardo are at it again to talk about whether all their talk really means anything. Fascinating topic for these two and particularly appreciated Martin's views as a published author of so many books. Excellent various points here but will try to comment on the one regarding personalities. Pete, you may be underestimating how much your personality as the 'visual and emotional head' of the SoT impacts your viewers. My entry to SoT was looking for a place that would bring new or unheard music to my attention that might be worth a listen. What caught my attention early was your straightforward approach but willingness to make the channel and outlet of optimism and positive enthusiasm and hold that standard fast over the almost three years this viewer has been watching. Even when a panelist may rant, it's done with such a positive spin of enthusiasm - even if that enthusiasm is a negative review or comment - that is a pleasure to watch. Do I agree with your views or all the panelists? Not at all. But you and all the co-captains have entertained me and brought lots of new or unheard music up for listening. Some is not my cup of tea, others are right up my alley. But the viewing of SoT is always a positive experience. Thanks for that. And special thanks to you and Martin for this discussion today. Great show.

The opinions of you guys really matters to me personally. You two, and other various contributors to this channel and the Contrarions, have helped me to really rediscover my love of music. My only music buddy of mine drifted apart from me over the last few years so I felt my love for music also drifting because I didn't have anyone to share it with. Being able to listen to you both espouse so wonderfully about the things I like really helped me feel like someone was connecting with me about it all again. You've not only drawn me back in to what I love but helped me discover new things too: the prime example being Styx. They weren't a band I ever gave a thought about but hearing Pete speak in so many videos about how great they are got me to give them chance...and I haven't regretted it as I love so much about them now. There's other artists that you have helped me discover or give another chance to, look at in a different light, and I feel all the better for it. Last night I went to my first gig in nearly 6 years thinking I'd never go to one again and I seen Saxon, a band I never would've in my younger years, again all inspired by channels like this. Everything is so informative too that I've learnt more about things I thought I already knew or had never even considered. Keep up the good work and know that you guys are doing wonders for so many of us out there across the world (Glasgow here).

Very interesting discussion. I listen a lot to your channel, even though I am not a listener to many of the bands you discuss (Black Sabbath being one example). I simply find your discussions and passion for the music intensely stimulating. Thanks to your channel I have become a huge Rush fan, a band I ne ver listened to before. Also thanks to you, Pete, I bought Martin’s “Bowie@75” book, and am thoroughly enjoying your idiosyncratic and engaging writing style and perceptions, Martin, and am going to further investigate your writings. My formative musical years were the sixties (yes, am that old!;-), and the Beatles were my band throughout my school years, followed by Bowie in the seventies. I listened to so much different music over the years, but your channel has now awoken in me a curiosity about numerous bands and genres (metal!) that I had not listened to before to any great extent, and this is the power that reviewers who are passionate about their work can have. Many thanks indeed to you both!

Pete n Martin, Your opinions matter because the way you present and facilitate the subject or topics. The depth of knowledge is quite deep. I really picked up on KZfaq channels such as The Contrarians which has helped educate me about bands, obscure albums, forgotten albums etc. which inspired me to go back and look at those albums or bands. Martin I first learned about you through the Banger TV series metal evolution, then on Lock Horns, then the year in review shows on Banger. I thoroughly enjoyed those shows and your opinions. Pete I started watching Sea of Tranquility a few years back at the beginning of the pandemic. It was such an awesome experience. Your knowledge and opinions are quite informative, educational and the various shows are awesome. To the two of you I really enjoy this show on Fridays. Makes my week. That being said I may not always agree with your opinions however I do respect it highly. Between the two of you, you turned me on to new music and bands I never heard of or, had not listened to in many years so this is a great service. I love Rick Beato because he is a fan, can play music, is a producer, musician, a professor and very knowledgeable and engaging. It's been an awesome education. Don't get me started on guitar channels like Guitar Hack, Steve from Boston, Phil McKnight, Glenn Fricker, Rhett Shull, Robert Baker, Tim Pierce, Music is Win etc, etc . Then again I geek out on guitars and gear since I am a guitar player myself. So does your opinion matter? Yes it does. Do I agree with it all 100% of the time? Nope but, I'm in line with most of it and learning constantly so, thank you. So I enjoy the content consistently.

Opinions help, and I value hearing other music lovers opinions. In the end critics put a credible spin on music in a way the potential appreciator will understand. It makes sense if you are into the genre. Also, Production matters for sure - sonics are vital. Song writing and musicality really matters, and so does musicianship. The opinion of the listener matters more than the experts, but how the music affects you is on the listener. Knowledge helps, but what you want to hear again is a true sign you like it.

That is an interesting topic since it is true that as far as I am concerned, I watch the different shows on SOT because I share the same taste in music with most of the people on the panel (especially in the Prog Seat). I love the fact that although I have been listening to music, getting albums for almost 40 years, I still learn about so many bands. It is also really refreshing to hear about different perspectives on albums I love or hate. It is not only about someone being knowledgeable on music but the whole concept of finding out that there are many people like me who enjoy music on such a deep level.

You don't dominate the panels like similar hosts on other channels out there. Your knowledge far outstrips mine in these genres and I'm always looking for new music. It's just big fun to listen to you guys waxing poetic about all things rock and metal. Feels like "There are human beings out there (across the water) who are just as deep in this stuff (maybe even deeper) as me", which feels pretty good. I used to have those vivid conversations about guitar-driven music with friends of mine, but lots of my buddies completely lost interest in music (to be frank, twenty years ago, I purchased about seven new albums per month... these days? Maybe one or two.), so at least you guys keep the fire burning. Do your opinions matter to me? Sometimes they do(several books by Mister Popoff in my shelf are printed proof), sometimes they don't (never got into Tull, Purple or X, no matter how much you guys praise 'em). But that's not the point - the point is: I look forward to listen to you guys (and Butch, and Lynn, and Ryan, and the mighty Chris Alo, to name just a few) 4,000 miles away from Toronto and the Hudson Valley ALL THE DAMN TIME.

What I expect the most from guys like you (and the reason why I watch SoT or Contarians) is because I LOVE finding out about bands/ artists I know nothing or little about. Yes it's great to hear that Paranoid is a great album, but I'd rather find out about more obscure (to me) bands or genres. I love watching the new releases on Wednesday and get tips on what I'll go get at the record store the next week-end. And I've "discovered" many many many great artists just watching your shows. It's a good question. I don't agree with everything that Pete and Martin have to say but I'm interested nonetheless, because they clearly have an insight and interest in the subject matter they discuss. Anyone should be able to express their opinion on a platform like KZfaq, anyway. No point questioning the authority or validity of a point of view you don't like on a platform like this, and the number of views and subscriptions these videos receive is more validation than most of us will ever have in any case.

I started to watch this channel at the start of the pandemic and it helped get me through some tough times. It also has introduced me to some cool bands. I like being part of a community of people who are passionate about music. That doesn’t mean that I love every band that is discussed on this channel but I still like to hear people talk about bands that they like. Some of the panelists are a little more well informed than others but that’s ok because you still get a good cross-section of tastes. I do wish that the show would broaden out more into other genres like pop. But otherwise I think the variety of topics and guests keeps things interesting. Well done!

Guys your maturity, and I mean that in the best sense, is priceless. No body is wrong. Nothing feels toxic. Keep doing what you do....so many channels (some more and some less popular) I used to like alot I realised after some time, are run or partly run by people who don't realise they have not mastered the above enough to be reliable or responsible to wider community. And that point is not age related but is personality related. Alot of people who love music are very sensitive people and that's sometimes ignored by more commercial channels. Here, everytime I pop in, I feel welcome....and I don't have to feel reactionary.....there's not an unhealthy price....physical or emotional.... attached to it either which feels right when talking about music. There seem to be no unwritten rules that are frowned upon if broken...or if you don't fit in. Everyone seems upfront and has lovely way of discussing things....and really like you say Pete about critics....there's only so far you can go before opinions become harmfully subjective because they impact a wider community and create unhealthy bias.....the other way.... Where you feel helped by people to appreciate, is the end game for me. And no ...I don't always agree. But I listen, feel I can pop in, and wether I know much about the topic or not, quickly feel welcomed in...part of your community....👍👍👍 Thanks Pete and Co👏👏👏 Ps I do write reviews sometimes but they usually are short and only on music I'd recommend in some way. Writing a review I think comes with a responsibility. Just don't promote it if you don't like it....because someone out there probably will. Oh and heres my review of Opeths performance at Hammersmith on Friday night.... I went in thinking they might be the best band in the world..... I left knowing they are the best band in the world.....for me.😁

Your collective opinions matter;because - there's a passion, a history, a work ethic in making videos & writing books that correlate with "fans" experiences & acquired tastes. Everybody's got an opinion & the final 👍 or 👎 is very personal.... it's still healthy to hear another perspective(makes a person think & consider different nuisances to the "sonics" that's out there.... past or present. + Just really enjoy youz guyz interactions(Pete, Martin, Chris, Butch especially).

I got into a lot of bands thanks to this channel and though I don't agree with everyone's opinions on 'Sea of Tranquility,' I love the discussions because everyone on the panel are music lovers like us! I don't comment on every single video because I'm not knowledgable on every single band that is mentioned on the show and that is ok. I'll comment on the videos that I have some knowledge on, and I'll just sit back and watch the videos where I don't have much knowledge on. Simple as that!

Cheers Pete and Martin, I tuned in three years looking to see what new music I haven’t heard and what older music I may have missed. I love Progressive Rock, Fusion and Hard Rock/ Metal and if someone who shares that sensibility tells me check out this newer band that I haven’t heard called Haken for example, Well Pete I will and I did. Now a band I wouldn’t have otherwise heard of I end up buying their entire discography and seeing them live. To me That’s the power and value of opinion and why it matters. On the other hand that’s why I never respected or listened much to Rolling Stone critics who constantly hammered bands I loved. SOT also has a good level of entertainment as well even if I don’t always agree with everyone. The foundation has been established and certainly value watching. Rock On!

There are two opinions that are important to me, the first is are the opinions informed and entertaining, in the case of ITPS, thats initially why I watch it, there a couple of member that talk about bands I’ll try but not in any expectation that I’ll like them because I know their tastes are different to mine. Yet I’ll still watch because they are informed interesting and put across in an entertaining way. The other opinions come from watching lots of shows and knowing the individuals involved, the viewers learn which contributors are in tune with their own tastes and trust when they recommend an artist or band that it is one worth investigating. again using the ITPS A-Z so many bands I haven’t heard of that it’s impossible to try them all, yet I know from the detailed informative descriptions , and which panelists are in tune with my tastes which bands I’m most likely to to enjoy. So yes opinions matter and help discover new things to listen to and enjoy , or sometimes not 😊

Inspired by Pete to do my own show I don’t consider myself a music critic because I am very opinionated about vocalists. My show is based on 1965 to 1975. trying to find my own niche the fact that I was going to concerts in around the music world back then. where a lot of people weren’t even born or were old enough to appreciate music at that time. also I own a psychedelic Light Show company and I’m really into the early psychedelic blues rock of that era.

Hello, The reason why I listen to your channel is that I can try out new things. I may not like them but I give them a chance. I do not have to agree with everything but I will at least try to listen to it. Not all types of music on your channel are for me. I used to work at a CD/record store and University music library back in the late 80's and early 90's. My job was to keep up on top 40 and Alternative. I never say that I am am an expert but I know lots. I was also an avid listener of American Top 40 as a kid. I also am an avid reader of music history reader and music documentary watcher. It is my hobby. As I used to tell my parents, my music hobby is better than me doing drug and drinking. I enjoy all the people on the channel because they help me broaden my knowledge plus many have become my friends on Facebook for example Armando, Pete, Charles, Martin, Chris and Etc.... People ask my opinion on different types of music and albums but I always say I am not an expert. I am just an avid fan of music and not all music types are for me. For me watching the channel is the same as sitting with friends talking music (and horror films) which is due to the way the channel format is. It's a relaxed informal chat with people giving their takes. As in life you'll agree with some opinions and not with others. I'm guilty of sometimes posting about something said (not often but occasionally) that got my hackles up but I do respect everyone is only giving their perspective. As to why does you and your guests opinions matter more than others it's as pointed out you know and love the bands films and topics raised as do I and the majority of the viewers id suspect and due to that.

Great topic. Kudos to you guys from coming up with new ideas every week. Everyone has an opinion, whether the subject be politics, sports, music, etc. I always felt if after listening to someone I could walk away and gather even a tid bit of useful information then mission accomplished. I'm a big believer in short and sweet. Make your point and move on. As soon as you drone on I start to lose interest, not unlike a 20 minute drum solo... ha ha! In other words, stating your opinion and storytelling go hand in hand. A couple of sports figures come to mind. Vin Scully could tell a story and keep you captivated. Dan Patrick can ask the most provocative question in the simplest of terms. Personally, having watched SOT for a few years now I can honestly say I've learned a ton about music from every aspect.
