I want to thank you for what you do. I have not been licensed for around 8 years. However, I do declare that I don't need a license. I recently got my first visit in around 10 years. There was a knock at the door, I opened the door. There was a man who declared he was a TV License Officer and presented his ID. I just shut the door I didn't say a word. I felt great, made my day thanks to you.

@@Nickle314 My daughter who lives in Islington told me the police get on the bus every day. That explains why. Have you seen the recording of that young woman they dragged of the bus with her young son crying for his mum while being held by a female cop with two brutes handcuffing his mum? And it turned out she had paid for her fare?

@@tal4546 I suspect that's rare. Here they turn up mob handed -12 in a gang. Lots get caught, plus they get a lot of illegals too. The problem is that in the background there are serious offences being committed. Driving on pavements, illegal motor bikes, no helmets, on the pavements. Assaults where people have to jump out of the way. Red light jumping too. So which is more serious? One woman on a bike got smashed by a car. 3 months in hospital. That will cost well over £100K. I think there needs to be a prosecution as well with a year in prison. Not for the car driver, they are innocent. The woman for jumping a red. A friend and neighbour was put in a wheel chair. Illegal e-motorbike on the pavement, hit from behind. The police won't stop it. Last monday they were ordering cyclists to cycle on the pavement so they could be safe. So to prove a point I walked down the pavement and a copper pulled me out of the way. Why? It's dangerous. So why are you ordering cyclists to put others at risk? He was rude too, so he's got a complaint. So will all of the others, for ignoring his actions. Now they know I have video, and I've requested all the info from them as part of the complaint. They know I have photos of all of their shoulder numbers. Will they supply it all? If not that's an offence too.

@@tal4546 TfL fund the Police to support the revenue enforcement teams. The woman who was detained failed to show proof of fare to the TFL revenue team even though she was required to. Then she refused to give her details to the police which is an arrestable offence. Even her own son told her to show proof of fare like every other normal human being on the bus.

Year's ago as i was going out of my front door for work i was arrested by police concerning a tv licence. I'd moved about a bit over the years and the police said they had been looking for me for a few years . Because apparently I'd answered the door to a goon and admitted to using a tv without a licence which was a lie. Anyway i was in court that day and the judge said as it was so long ago i shouldn't even be there. So i was released and lost a days wage this why i detest these lying scum.

Police forces who say they cannot meet this particular request under the Freedom of Information Act because it would cost more than £450 to do so are lying. A simple database query would provide the answer to the question in seconds and probably cost less than £4.50, including letter preparation and postage charges. They do this to discourage further FOI requests from the same individual.

How long do you store THEIR information and for what reason? Speaking of the goons, have you noticed there is a distinct lack of new footage involving door to door interactions with them. Are video doorbells deterring them, or are they giving up as they simply cannot cope with the workload of visiting an ever increasing amount of addresses that are ditching their licences?

The organsation must advise you how to restructure the request to get the costs down. I take it that's a fail. The standard approach. If you asked for the last ten years, ask just for the last year. Then request the cost of that and start adding in other years one by one.

Licence free for 6 years. Never had a visit, and just keep throwing the letters in the bin (I've had so many 'investigations' started into my property now!). Best advice I ever received: turn your home into an information black hole; they send stuff in, but nothing ever comes out. If they don't know who you are, they can't fine, much less prosecute you. If you ignore the letters, and don't speak to the goons, you'll never have a problem.

Another option, report each letter to the police via their website as harrasment. Write the reference on the letter and file it. If they turn up, name and id, report them for harrasment, plus the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 Section 28 offence above. Then you have the evidence to stop them writing to you, visiting you, because its harrasment. ie. Would it be acceptable for an ex with a restraining order on them to write to you every 2 years asking if you still wanted to have sex with them? Same BBC thinking.

@@FuelPoverty - Prick. The BBC has ordered an investigation into how an outsourcing firm collects the TV licence amid claims that it runs an aggressive incentive scheme to maximise collection of fees from non-payers. Under a bonus scheme alleged by the Daily Mail, Capita’s enforcement officers are told to catch more than 28 licence fee evaders each week, as part of the company’s £58m contract to collect the charge. Staff targeted vulnerable people, including this month a war veteran with dementia and a young mother in a women’s refuge, the Mail reported. Capita was said to have told an undercover reporter, who posed as an applicant for an enforcement job, that the company was “greedy” for as much cash as possible. Area TV licensing manager Ian Doyle was filmed saying: “We are looking to get 28 licence sales per week from each officer. As soon as you hit that magic 28 there’s a bonus ... Basically you’ve got to get 28 conviction statements before you can start hitting extra money.” He joked that the job involved “attacking poor unsuspecting victims”. The BBC told Capita to investigate the claims and “ensure swift and appropriate action” was taken. It confirmed that Capita operated an incentive scheme for enforcement officers, but insisted that this should only apply to licence fee sales and not prosecution statements as the undercover footage suggested. A letter to Capita from the director general of the BBC, Tony Hall, demanded reassurances that the practices revealed by the investigation were not standard, and the collection teams were not targeting vulnerable people. In the letter, released by the BBC, he wrote: “Public trust is the cornerstone of the licence fee system. It is clear that, in this instance, Capita has fallen short of the standards the BBC has a right to expect on behalf of the British public.” A BBC spokesman said: “We are very disappointed by the conduct of Capita’s interviewing managers in this particular case, which is not in line with the high standards we expect and does not reflect the policies in place.” It added: “We have asked Capita to investigate urgently and ensure swift and appropriate action is taken. We expect inquiry officers to behave in a courteous, professional manner and abide by a published code of conduct.” A spokeswoman for Capita said: “Inquiry officers are expected to act in a professional manner, abide by strict rules of conduct and adhere to the Pace [Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984] code of practice and we strongly refute any allegation that inquiry officers are instructed to act outside of these requirements.”

More sound advice. I haven't had a licence now for approaching 20 years. Some time back in the early 2000's my telly packed up just before christmas. Funds were tight and I agreed with my good lady that we would wait until after christmas until we got a new telly, it never happened, we don't miss it, there's a whole world of interesting viewing to be had on youtube. We aren't into sports, cooking programmes, unreality telly, soap operas, television has nothing to offer either of us, the radio and a good book and youtube are much more our cuppa. You should send an FOI request to Norfolk police to find out how many FOIs they'd answered with the information, and how many they'd turned down because of the £450 thing!
@anonnemo2504
@anonnemo2504 10 ай бұрын

The police forces that said it was too expensive probably don't have good record keeping. If you don't tag the cases as "TV Licencing" when you enter them, it's very difficult to then find them when you want stats. I suspect they dropped the 'e' so it could match "license" and "licensing". They missed that the noun is spelt with a c, though...

I'm well aware that their threats are empty but what irks me is the fact that people live in fear of them. Their tactics basically amount to intimidation and fear and it's the more vulnerable in society that fall prey to that. When I wanted to cancel my license because I was moving house and leaving the TV they wanted a letter from my land lord as proof before they'd stop the taking the direct debit so I just canceled it through my bank. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who only have a TV because they're paying the license fee and never really bother to actively watch it. I was in that camp for a long time until I moved house and gifted my TV to the next occupants

Great info John, I cancelled my tv license over 3 years ago and I’ve been receiving letters for the last year. The latest one I received today was from Scott robson of Cambridge enforcement. The main title of the letter read “official notice” saying I was apparently in breach of the communications act 2003 🤣 I know I’m in the right to ignore these letters as I don’t watch tv and don’t have a tv set up anywhere in the property so I’ll continue to let them waste their time and money!

In big bold font. If you ignore this letter your address will be treated as unlicensed. This means that we may have to open an investigation and schedule a visit to your address (basically like someone saying comply or we send the boys round, well that's how I took it) we will also continue writing to you. Just wow, shocking and unnerving. I called them and Informed them I had no need for a licence and got it confirmed on an automated line so they should not be bothering me again for 2 years.

If they do identify themselves shut the door DO NOT TALK TO THEM. The reason I say open the door is because I won't live in fear of opening my own door. If you really are scared of opening the door to them don't open the door either ask who they are through the letter box or through a window. But don't talk anymore. They are not your friends.

"Don't kick off". Great advice. As much as you want to give these goons a mouthful when they call, they are NOT BBC employees (even though Capita are contracted by the BBC), and all that being abusive will do, is to ensure another visit. As CJC says, just say "no thanks" and shut the door. Don't go off about how unpatriotic the BBC is,or how many paedos they employed, just treat them as you would anyone selling stuff door-to-door. "No thanks, goodbye." And if you are watching live TV without a licence, mute the TV or switch it off or pause it before answering the door at ANY time. If they can see or hear the TV, that MIGHT be grounds for further action. And do not under any circumstances let them in! "I just need to check your equipment". Apart from "oo-er missus",they do not NEED to do anything of the sort. They want to, but have no power to do so and don't let them in. If they were selling encyclopedias (showing my age now!), you wouldn't let them in to prove you have a set of encylopedias! You do not have to prove anything to these goons.

Even if a bailiff has a court warrant it can have no lawful effect unless you allow access. Read the criminal law act 1977 section 6. You need to know the difference between legal and lawful . Just thinking out loud... Scenario: On a previous visit something 'kicked off'. Now, a return visit is planned (not with a warrant) just another attempt to sell a TV licence. What justification would there be for police to even agree to attend 'to prevent a breach of the peace'? As the unsolicited presence of the TV licence salesman at someone's door had PREVIOUSLY resulted in strong words then, surely, THEIR proposed return to that address would be considered to be a deliberate antagonistic act and the police should tell them not to visit that address as they are clearly not welcome there. Furthermore, they should be told that any subsequent unsolicited visit (absent a warrant) would actually be deemed to be the 'behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace' and that they could face charges.
