Solar energy is pretty great. It's clean, it's pretty much everywhere, and it's free.
Portable solar panels give us an easy way to harness this energy, without breaking the bank.
But can you REALLY count on them to keep your cat video and social media machines juiced up?
The answers you seek lie within.

I have an Anker 21 watt foldable solar panel that has a pouch that you can put battery bank or device in to protect from direct sunlight or rain. I typically use it to charge a 10,000 mAh battery bank completely in a day. This allows me to fully charge phone(s) and/or tablet while camping or during a power outage. Anker in my experience is a quality brand of a variety of products. Cheers

Funny you say that. I almost got that very charger instead of this one, but I wanted the extra wattage for the test. I agree Anker usually makes good stuff. Thanks for sharing my friend.

Has it held up with use? Do you put it on the back of your backpack if you're hiking? I heard most of these things die or break in a year with heavy use, so most backpackers just carry a bank. If you're away from an outlet for 6+ days then the solar might be more useful.

Yeah your battery bank definitely isn't 30,000 mah, assuming your solar panels were in peak conditions producing 28 watts at 16 volts the entire time it was outside, in 11.5 hours it would've only outputted 20,000 mah assuming 100% efficiency. Usually the safe bet when buying power banks off of amazon is to at least halve their power claims.
@alexcrowder1673
@alexcrowder1673 Жыл бұрын
The 28watts cant be pushed through a single port anyways. The USB ports arent capable of the full 28 watts. The only way you could get even 25 watts is to use 2 or 3 ports at once. It loses a few watts just to the electronics in the charge controller too.
@cristibaluta
@cristibaluta Жыл бұрын
I don't think that panel has 28W, one single side has 5 usually, so it's 20W in full sun, perpendicular with the sun all the time
@Yigitcanakkas
@Yigitcanakkas 7 ай бұрын
He said that panels outputted 10watts in direct sunlight and charged the bank in about 11.5 hrs, considering the age of the powerbank and heat etc loss, 115 whs of total input might have charged a 95-100wh capacit. Sounds about right to fill a claimed 111wh powerbank.

Solar panel are good investment specially for hickers but you should test it many times and buy from a store that has after sale service and fellow om good company so you get the best deal don't look for cheap prices you will regret that choice after spending a week without electricity in the middle of nowhere. My solar panel is not capable of hot sun so the sun damage it in a hot day so i lose it in a moment which i needed it, it was from i mars company for solar panels and its cost me more that hundred dollars

I love the big blue 28w, but it can't push all 28w through any of one of its usb ports. It has to use multiple ports at once otherwise its wasting some of the 28watts its producing. I wish it had a 15v solar power output like the allpower 100w portable panels have. The allpower panels are the same size as the big blue 28w panels, so they fold down to the same size. Its just about 3 times thicker when folded since it has about 3 times more panels than the big blue 28w has.

@@RandoTechInfo So after testing it looks like the allpower 100w averages almost 5 times the power output of the big blue 28w, BUT its limited by the electronics to 80w. So in low sun it performs almost 5 times better, but in ideal conditions only 3 times better. My cheap power station cant safely accept more than 80w input for long anyways though, so it works for me. Its still 100w of panels, so itll collect more than a set of 80w panels, its just limited to 80w output even if you are collecting the full 100w at the perfect angle. The bigblue28w loses a few watts to electronics too, but not as much. Both are fantastic for what they are made for. Both exceptionally lightweight for their output. The anker 21w is another good one. Its about 100grams lighter than the bigblue 28w too. For backpacking with just 1 cellphone id go for the anker or big blue, but for family camping or a "bug out bag" id opt for the allpower 100w. I can even jumpstart my car with the allpower panels so i keep them in my car.

@@RandoTechInfo Definitely! It's a bummer the price just shot up. They were 60 dollars cheaper on prime day than they are now ($140 vs $200). Also, make sure you have something that can take a 15-18v dc solar input because usb becomes very impractical for measuring power output on the bigger panels. Youll probably need a pretty substantial power station too. Depending on the model, probably 500wh or larger to be able to take the full charge speeds the allpower panels can output. A lot of 250wh power stations for example are limited to roughly 60 watt charge speeds anyways. So it may look like you are getting less power output than you are if your power station cant handle the input. it's basically getting throttled to protect the power station. Anyways hope that helps! Xdragon 70w are a nice middleground too that use the same high efficiency type of panels as the bigblue and the allpower. Much like the other two models, they are also very lightweight for their power output.
