“Debate me, bro” is pretty much an internet slogan now. From Ben Shapiro to Steven Crowder, online debate culture is picking up steam. But on TV, this has existed for decades - in the form of presidential debates. Lou explains some of the most famous debate moments, and why we place so much importance on them.

This was a really good video but I wish Lou highlighted the Nixon v Kennedy debate more. The issue of debates on TV versus over radio have long influenced voter decisions. Many people who listened to the debate on radio were more likely to vote for Nixon, whereas on TV they were more likely to vote for Kennedy, as they thought Nixon only APPEARED weak, versus young and handsome Kennedy. That debate spurred more female voters than any other election cycle as well. It's a very interesting topic that delves deep into culture and human psychology, I wish it was talked about more

After every Beme video I start to feel more and more hopeful for a more friendly and intellectual world. Your video's are well made, nuanced, not to long and easy to understand for everyone. They make people see news from multiple angles and new perspectives. Beme is the dawn of a new unbiased and nuanced age of information and I can't wait until this way of presenting the news gets mainstream. Thank you Beme! And please don't let big corpo CNN influence or destroy you ;)

this makes me appreciate German public-law broadcasters like "ARD" and "ZDF" even more, because they are heavily funded and based on the Interstate Treaty on Broadcasting. Even though the public contribution is very high with 17,50€ per month, it always guarantees multiple sources for independent, objective, transparent and free journalism as well as pluralism of opinions and media. All that without being driven by ratings or brand deals with advertisers. I like that :)

I think you are right about how debates have become harsh arguments rather than thoughtful discussion. but I think people like Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder may call it debates sometimes but they really mean discussion. I think it may be true that online debate culture is picking up but I think online discussion culture is growing too. Change my mind is a long-form format showing that it is at least trying to give the entire context and nuance. Likewise, Ben Shapiro although he has many videos online "destroying the libs" he also has an hour-long Sunday show where he tries to go in-depth on issues with people that he may disagree with. lastly, you put a tweet of Jordan Peterson on the screen who is probably the most interested in discussion as all his youtube videos are over an hour long an being a psychology professor is very well educated. I think sometimes these people get into debates because it is the only way that can talk with people of opposing viewpoints and it makes for good content but I think in the ideal scenario they are not debating but discussing but a lot of people will not sit and discuss with them.

Change My Mind isn’t aggressive. The whole goal is to allow two people with opposing views to sit down in a safe space and explain their opinion on the matter and ‘debate’ the reasoning or evidence used. Hagglers are removed by the power of the crowd respecting the procedure and no one is mocked for their opinions even if they are opposite of Crowders. The only idea’s that are made into comedic sound bites are people who go off on tangents and are unable to control themselves or the fact that they their ‘opinion’ can only be the truth.

My main issue is that Peterson has said numerous times that the most advisable strategy in a debate is to come to a mutually agreeable conclusion for both parties. To use the least amount of force necessary and to regard your "opponent" as someone who has something to teach you. I think this video sums up his thoughts on debates quite well : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rL6RhK-FnbyaY2w.html The tweet by Peterson you used was in rebuttal to a hit piece by Ira Wells which spent a long time trying to attack him, it's not that fair to use that tweet without some context. With that being said, I don't think you're characterization of Crowder and Shapiro are that far off and like you, I get annoyed at the "debate me bro" persona. However, I have seen a few long form discussions with Crowder and Shapiro that have been somewhat civil and fruitful. With regards to your self criticism, it's welcome, but to me it falls somewhat flat after your mischaracterization of Peterson. It seems like a tactic you are using to come off as unbiased but in reality you're just covering your bases so you don't have to take the immediate flack anyone could levy had they realized that CNN profits greatly over the very thing you're criticizing, all while forming the narrative against right wing figures. Ultimately, I still enjoy this channel a lot and I am thankful you took the time to read and reply to my comment.

@@happilyconfuseddog8951 i think you're focusing a little too much on a tweet we flashed on the screen. To think that I wrote a 1700 word piece to disguise a subtle dig at Peterson is a little strange. From what I've seen of Peterson, he always comes off as needlessly aggressive. Thats my perspective, which you can disagree with. Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful reply. I'm always a little miffed when people attack my association with CNN - as if my content looks anything like what they usually do. Ive spent the better part of 100 episodes demonstarting how I think and see the world. Can't you trust my intentions by now, if not my conclusions?

Ben Shapiro is a reporter who focuses on mocking stupid ideas, both from Trump and the left. You need to stick to unbiased facts BEME, rather than exposing your left leaning bias. Ben Shapiro never seek to destroy anyone, but dispute their views. He has even had private conversations afterward to hash things out on good therms, with people he disagree with. Mocking stupid ideas is important to reign in Trump with his ego-maniac tendencies. If we laugh it's healthy, because it's spur on democracy through engagement.
