When I got my Russian tortoise I was told that it was just going to sit around eat and sleep all the time. But after a week of petting it trying to get it friendly it's become very needy. Like a butt scratch everyday along with shell and head scratches. It loves to explore and has a lot of energy for something the size of my hand.

I would put long life span as a pro. It is pretty cool to have a pet that is going to be a life long companion.

I agree! But many people don’t want to make a commitment as big as that. So it’s both a pro and a con depending on the person

These pets are smarter than people may think! I really enjoy mine who has a whole room to herself and loves dandelion leaves...fresh in the front yard never treated with harmful chemicals.

Love my Russian Tortoise. His name is Bill Murray and I’ve had him for 12 years now. He’s a great pet! He’s super active and friendly. I’d say one con is keeping his “beak” trim. He’s just squirmy if he ever needs it trimmed and it’s more like a two person job. Other than that he’s fine with being picked up and seems to ask for it often.

I had this problem for a while, but once I switched to a rock for him to feed on instead of the plastic bowl I had, it kept it from growing too long

I just built a really cool tortoise habitat in my back yard here in Florida. I hadn't bought a tortoise yet and randomly one day my wife was gardening in the yard and boom! There was a freaking russian tortoise just hanging out under the flowers! 😂

Glad this popped up on my feed. I’ve had my eye on one where I buy my crickets for my beardie. Ha. I see him every week and have been trying to make up my mind if he’s the tortoise I want. You gave great info! Hope your channel continues to grow.

You have a wonderful comedic sense of humor, which makes your video a delight to watch. Your boy looks very well taken care of. I just adopted one (George) and anxious to pick him up from Fedex tomorrow! KZfaq videos are so helpful in preparation for your new family member, the perfect fit of tortoise for "you," and learning about their dietary needs.

I own/share my home with 9 Russian Torts (all were rescues which I was told would die for various reason coming from a Vet). But all lived in my outdoor enclosure. I love these guys. They are a wonderful pets, but don't get them from a pet store chain, get them from a rescue (abandon pet). Lastly, I wish to say I enjoyed your video it has some sound advice and a nice enclosure. Glad I came by this video :)

@@thereptiIeguy , Well you're most welcome. What my main like of your video was how it became clear you really cared about your pet. That is number one. I've had mine since 2004 and they live 5 months a year outside in a huge 12 yard pen with burrows (they dug). Keep up your reptile posts you seem like a nature. Good luck.

I have box turtles and a Russian tortoise. I put my Russian tortoise in a 150 gallon Rubbermaid cattle tank outside during the summer. My box turtles have the run of my entire backyard because my fence is buried 2 feet underground and set in a concrete footer. I don't let my Russian tortoise and box turtles near each other because of possible fighting or disease transmission. My Russian tortoise is a female. I've been into keeping and breeding reptiles for 39 years now and also have snakes and leopard geckos. Except for the box turtles I have gotten away from the breeding aspect of keeping. There's not much I can do about the box turtles because they all live outside together. Right now my box turtles are hibernating and I won't see them until sometime in April.

hey can u make a video on the salmonella sickness from bearded dragons. A friend don't want his anymore.. so I'm going to take him. He lives in a plastic baby pool :/poor thing.. can I use live plants, moss , outside dirt, wood and rock ?
@thereptiIeguy
@thereptiIeguy 2 жыл бұрын
You should check if the plants you’re using are poisonous and moss. The outside dirt may have parasites in it and the wood and rocks should be fine as long as they don’t have bugs on them. I suggest you just buy some cheap untreated dirt instead and some other stuff. Do some more research, tortoises are great pets but can be expensive!

@@thereptiIeguy thanks for the input .. I have 2 anoles 4 cats 1 dog and 4 hermit crabs going on 6 years . I use outside stuff for the hermits so figured I could for the tortoise . I'm definitely going to do some research. I'd never get a little dude if I didn't:) but still think i could give him a better life :/ boo don't wanna think about it .. shit breaks my heart . Closer to animals then humans for sure . Wish I could help them all!! Lol

3 days isn't an issue ..... By time it will adapt to your presence and eat frequently
@danjones6702

if they dont drink, you should soak them in water. leave them in warm water up to where their upper and lower shell meets. they can absorb some water. food isnt an issue as they can go a long ways without food just not so with water.

Do you recomend feeding lettuce to beardies?
@thereptiIeguy
@thereptiIeguy 2 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t. And that’s because lettuce has little to no nutritional value for your beardie. If you beardie is dehydrated though it’s a good way to quickly get them hydrated again because they’re mostly just water. But then again you could just give them a bath. So if you feed your beardie a lot of lettuce it will most likely be a bit lean and can quite possibly have diarrhea from it.

No! They need solid walls they can’t see through. Glass tanks aren’t large enough and don’t allow a heat gradient.
