If I may humbly add... assess the witness's vocabulary, and formulate questions using words that the witness understands.

What if the evidence in chief is coming from an adversary witness, in this case should you be using leading questions?

yes, as this is one of the exceptions of the general rule, the other exception being when clarifying undisputed evidence
