love how you didn’t spend the entire time making sure each feature was 100% exact in your line drawing, but instead chose to really focus on establishing value. I think artists can often forget that having the drawing, painting, etc. be exactly like the photo isn’t the important part, it’s making a product that is technically sound and evokes the photo and it’s subject. great video, really good explanations and use of both effective and efficient techniques.

Agreed :) and it feels most people seem to get crazy about colors. Especially in "skin tones". In my videos I try to "tech" people that the color is waaaay less important than the values as the color changes all the time and no one has "one skin tone". - As this changes even when you walk from one room to the next. And bottom line the artsy look I think is important...to give it a handmake look :)

If you like it, check out graphite washes. You shave off some graphite from a block and you 'paint' and work it with a brush. Some artists actually use water, sponges, and graphite to help make textures for pieces by moving it all over a paper.

Its artists like yourself [the ones who put their work out there ] that really help me break down the barrier that says you can't do this! And inspire me to try a different area of drawing to work on...manga is fun to draw but if i can get better at realistic drawing then that only adds to my arsenal of what i can offer...time to bust out a new sketch book and continue working on realistic drawing....thanks! !! Already liked and subscribed :-)

Thank you so much for making these, I love your art and I just feel that we are so blessed to have you making these free accessible videos for us. Ray lee - From watching some of Kirsty's tutorials, she mentioned using a kneaded eraser to finely erase some very thin areas if you need to do it. And then carefully brushing away some of the debris with an art brush. And not with our fingers. I may not be totally correct, but that's what I've seen so far. I'm learning under Kirsty's tutorials. She's amazing! And I thank her and others for sharing their amazing artistic talents.

Yes you are totally right! I suppose I focused too much on the features and rushed through doing the chin. The line is way to harsh. At least now I know for next time :D

Maybe when you are critiquing a preschooler then technique should not be a consideration. Technical mastery should be as much a part of art as creativity is, otherwise you end up with the mockery that is said to pass for art that's currently on display at galleries. Technical mastery should be the foundation of art, very few people would accept arbitrarily banging the keys of a piano as music (tried in the early 20th century, but did not stick) why is a drawing any different?
@dotFrazUnderscore
@dotFrazUnderscore 6 жыл бұрын
do you think the people that make "the mockery that is said to pass for art" don't know how to draw a face? Let's take picasso for example. Picasso could draw photorealistic faces when he was 14, yet he turned to less realism and cubism, and tried to simplify shapes to the point that they were just recognizable as what they were. Yes, technical mastery can be a goal, but style can be a goal, the dynamics and composition can be a goal. I assume with mockery you mean things like the color field painting and the abstract expressionism. I have a degree in both music and fine arts, and we made color field-type stuff for *three years* as part of our education to learn how to make a balanced composition out of black and white squares. i can tell you, i had a lot more difficulty doing that than i did drawing a photorealistic building. Now lets talk about "accepting arbitrarily banging on the keys of a piano". this is the comment that really pissed me off. I got the third highest grades *ever* in my school for guitar, by playing a piece that was not in the slightest pleasant to hear("Foxfire Eins" by helmut oehring, in case you were wondering). during my education, I chose to not technically master my instrument. I chose to get as close as was necessary to play the music i wanted to play. Before they allow you to even get close to contemporary stuff you have to almost master technique. you have to be playing guitar at high level for years before they let you play it on an exam. technical master might be a goal for you(I hope, or else you'd be someone completely outside of the artworld, spouting critique on something they don't even remotely understand), but for some artists, it's not. Technical mastery, or something close to that, to me was a first step. it was a necessary evil to make art that was unique. I was that kid in class that took the assignment, and made it my own. It didn't look like "technical mastery", but i spent more time thinking about what i was going to do on *one assignment* than the people that showed "technical mastery" spent on making three. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as to what art is, but sometimes, just sometimes, making something unique is way harder than making something perfect. Keep that in mind next time you judge what you see or hear. P.S. people are still making contemporary music. Helmut Oehring wrote Foxfire in 1964, Lachenmann won his last prize like 7 years ago. Contemporary music is very much alive. Maybe you're referring to schoenbergs Dodecaphonics? I wouldn't know.

To the people saying they can't even do the "don'ts" part: PRACTISE!!! Do you think somebody wakes up one day with the sudden talent to draw? You can learn everything you've ever wanted but it takes a lot of effort and tons of time! Don't give up and you'll definitely see results but please please don't dismiss somebody's ability to draw as mere talent!!!! They worked very hard!!!!
