Knew a family who had a tiny squirrel monkey for almost 30 years. He slept in his cage but knew how to open the door so essentially ran free in their house. He was housetrained to use his cage which was lined with newspaper but preferred the cats' litterboxes (they also had up to 3 cats). The cats initially tried stalking him because he was tiny but he quickly demonstrated that he could put some serious hurt on them if he wanted to. He could be destructive, and I wouldn't recommend one as a pet to anyone else. But they had a large family with a lot of kids around to play with him and keep an eye on him. They had to keep their cupboards locked because he knew how to open them and would tear open cereal boxes and smash peanut butter and jelly jars on the floor if given the opportunity. He had astonishing speed, leaping ability, and coordination and so 'won' almost any game of tag or keep-away he played with the kids. He escaped the house a few times and was un-catchable. During his escapes, he lived in the trees and ate insects and raided the neighbors' bird feeders and any pet food they left outside, but would be back tapping at a window on the first cold night.

I LOVE to see a video explaining why monkeys do NOT make good pets!!!! Tic Toc is breaking my heart with all the pet monkey videos and seeing first hand what little enrichment they get, the processed and sugary foods they eat, the being bound on leashes or imprisoned by cages. They belong in their family groups if their own species! It’s terrible that humans have the capability of destroying an animals life for their own selfish reasons. Thank you for all you do for those little (non-human) primates!

Love this lady, she has so much love and spunk ❤ No wonder all the animals live her there! And the connections and trust she builds by understanding their way of living and giving them that enrichment they need, it must be so rewarding for her and the animals. She's got a lot on her plate taking care of these gremlins and she's there 24/7 for them. That's just AMAZING 👏 🙌 These animals are just as lucky to have her than she's having them ❤

I don't think it should be illegal but you should need permit/training to get any crocodilian/hot/primate.
@iGoddess
@iGoddess 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree 👍 You need permits for other exotic animals, so why not primates? We've all heard the horror stories about how testy, jealous and aggressive they can get. But seems like nobody cares if another monkey bites someone else's face off or if they don't get the quality of life they deserve and need. It's truly a shame, cause if anything happens then these cute and amazing wild animals will have to pay the price with their lives 😢 😿 😭
@PrimateProductions

@@iGoddess in most (not all) states that it is legal to keep monkeys as pets they do require permits. BTW just an FYI, no "monkey" has ever "bitten someone's face off"!! That was a chimpanzee and there is a HUGE difference in chimps and say, squire monkeys!🙂
@iGoddess
@iGoddess 2 жыл бұрын
@@PrimateProductions OK it was a chimp who bit that woman's face off, but isn't a chimp in the primate family? It's still a animal that has instincts and the older they get, the more testy they get cause of the hormonal change. Our kids go through puberty and turn into little gremlins, they get testy and turn into a whole different person. They are as sweet honey milk when they're little, they love you, wanna be around you all the time, give hugs and kisses. But as soon as those hormones kick in they don't want to have nothing to do with you anymore, they'll try you and act like they're grown and nobody can tell them anything, some freak out got behavioral issues and you wonder what the heck happened to my sweet little child? Animals go through the same phases, but they can't talk, they can only act or react and that's where and when it gets dangerous, cause you never ever know how an animal will act or react? Their wild hormones and instincts come in and that cute little monkey all over a sudden turns into something else and you've got to be careful when you get a monkey or any other cute baby animal that could possibly eff you up with their teeth and claws as they grow older and bigger. And I think there should be permits for certain animals everywhere. They love making laws for reptile keepers which makes it very hard for keepers to be able to take their big snake for instance outside, they have to keep it inside at all times, they can't use them for educational purposes to teach kids and ppl about them, so they can learn and learn to love them. Cause ppl will only protect who and what they love and there are many endangered species that need our protection and conservation. Those are laws for non-venomous snakes and I get you need a permit for venomous, but for non venomous and for other reptiles they have these laws as well and they're trying to implement more and more laws. But there are no permits for certain animals that could hurt you or anyone else and which shouldn't be kept privately.

THANK YOU for going to her place, and putting high quality info out there! I'm in Canada, we're not allowed to have exotics like monkeys as pets (which is how it should be - dogs & cats have been domesticated , and each side getting advantages - for thousands & thousands & thousands of years!). Monkeys as pets have been maybe the last hundred years (and chimps & orangs, due to the long time their babies are babies, therefore manageable by a human, because they're just babies). It SHOULD be outlawed. PRIMATES ARE NOT PETS. PERIOD. FULL STOP. Imagine if we could go buy fully adult humans as pets -- it's insane, but it's the same thing, which means it is equally as insane. It is cruelty to animals to take a monkey or ape from their family &/or troop. If anyone suggested to these people that they should have a wild bumblebee as a pet ... they would say "LUDICROUS! They need their queen & their hive!!" .... but isn't it the same thing? Why is a bumblebee given the freedom & not a different form of highly intelligent life form. We already know that Orcas belong with their families, and NOT in a tank that is barely the size of a human's kitchen sink by scale (imagine a human trying to fit & live in an "enclosure" the size of a kitchen sink -- it's ridiculous. But the same thing -- especially if these Squirrel & Spider monkey owners are jamming them into a large birdcage. Or large Guinea Pig cage!). THANK YOU for going & learning about these animals, for learning even how they co-exist in their new troops AND for publicly airing, without giving in to sponsors of whatever company makes "monkey biscuits", because ya just know it's a conglomerate that owns all the usual worldwide brand names!)

You're wrong. I've owned a squirrel monkey now for 8 and a half years. He is entirely submissive to my authority. He has been potty trained to use the toilet for nearly 3 years now. My literal only complaint in that regard is that he doesnt wipe or ever flush the toilet. But his poo is usually of a very dry consistency, so it does not create much residue in discharge. In fact there hasn't been much problem with odor since he finally grasped the concept of using the toilet, which was achieved by a reward system rather than a punishment system. Soba, like any squirrel monkey is very active and constantly moving. Being a minimalist has made this issue near unproblematic. I cannot speak for all squirrel monkeys as I've only owned this one, but he has proven to be extremely adaptive, valuable, impressionable and attentive with an utter willingness and ability to domesticate without any difficulty. Out of an entire average week, Soba is with me approximately 68-73% of the time. When he is not, he is obviously always at our home. We do not even own a cage of any kind, and Soba has access to the outdoors through our doggy door, which he sometimes utilizes without supervision. The only problem we've ever had with that was that one time an eagle thought he was smaller than he is and scratched him a bit in a failed snatching. Other than that, some days I'll come home and he'll be up in a tree above the house playing, but always returns before sundown. When he is inside, home alone or not, he is never too messy or destructive because he constantly has a flow of new toys for new stimulation. Our doing that solved his nature in doing so long ago. Perhaps the warnings and cautions proposed in this video are intended for individuals whom do not have the capacity for properly distributing and maintaining a loving and authoritative intellectual guardianship over a lesser intellect such as a primate. Surely this is the case, because if one possesses that capacity, these creatures are a lifelong joy to have as part of the family. Sorry to contradict your overarching premise and intention with this video, but truth be told, your claims to the ownership of squirrel monkeys do not ring true for every situation. But good work nonetheless - idiots shouldn't procreate, let alone attempt to domesticate a cat, so monkeys are obviously out of the question.

Like urine and rotting fruit.. that tangy smell when the fruit flies come... yea... and this lil man, Itchy was his name bc they always scratch themselves, had a testoterone war with my dad EVERY SINGLE DAY! He was raised by a woman/lady idk her age but not like a grandma but no men around. Itchy, when dad got home, would mkkmmm... 😫 show off his manhood, and "finish" in his hand and throw it at my dad! NO joke and it's so gross so sorry I tried to explain it as nicely and PG as I could but to assert him being alpha male would do this daily. My dad hated him and he was so so messy and gross! There are cute sides to em like eating fruit loops spinning em and looking at then so interested with each color and flavor but 80% is "not what Hollywood depicts" ya know? Freakin so much mess and so much work with monkeys but this breed for sure! Anyone who mentions they want one, I tell em to volunteer at a kinder, toddler care, then realize u don't get a lunch break or get to go home and that's what a monkey entails.

I'd prefer that people require training/permits to acquire and raise certain common "exotic" pet species. Sadly, with the tragic trend of infant macaques in Cambodia and various parts of Indonesia being abducted and sold, these remarkable species are being exploited, tormented, starved, and abused on film by sadists who appeal to those who prefer to watch this abuse in their free time. Monkeys are extremely social and they require more care, attention, and affection than most people are willing (and able) to offer... As much as I would love to experience the challenge of raising a monkey from infancy, I also know that my family and my job require the most of my attention. If I couldn't provide the best possible life for an animal, I would not acquire the animal. Pets are cohabitating companions, they are not accessories...

Which is exactly why people should be more responsible and do a ton of research and educate themselves before even thinking about getting one!! Too many people just impulsively get a monkey or just cannot be bothered to learn about them before getting one and then end up getting rid of them which is extremely cruel. Monkeys bond with a person that is their caregiver and that is the same as their troop or family. When people end up giving them to someone else it can have negative consequences for the monkey for the rest of their Ives and it is so cruel! In the US people who get baby monkeys for pets approximately 85%-90% end up getting rid of them by the time they are 5 years old which is so sad and so wrong!

I'm so glad that you are able to enjoy a monkey at home. It's definitely not for every family. However, once you exchange love with an animal, that bond demands whatever it takes to meet each new challenge. I'm not envious, but I do know how fortunate you are. Primates are truly fascinating in every way. I wish you and your growing family health & happiness (and as much cleanliness and sanity as you and your wife are able to cultivate.) @@jayblack7495 You say regarding monkeys "However, once you exchange love with an animal that bond demands whatever it takes to meet each new challenge" The problem with people getting monkey as pets is that they often do NOT do "whatever it takes" . They get a baby monkey and think it's so cute and lovable and they do exchange love with it and the monkey then sees that person as their troop or family but as soon as they are no longer little and easily controlled most people don't want to deal with them anymore. In the US approximately 85%-90% of monkeys that people get as pets end up being gotten rid of by the time they reach 5 years of age which is pretty devastating to a young monkey and can have lifelong negative consequences for them!

@matthewmead2374
@matthewmead2374 Жыл бұрын
I would think it would all depend on how early they are introduced to other pets and how much time they interact with the pet. And this would have to go both ways with both animals being socialized with each other from an early age. Keep in mind that dogs and cats are classic predators while most small primates are usually frequently hunted prey animals in their natural environments. So if you just put some random dog in a room with a squirrel monkey, it's no different than putting it with any other small animal and it's simply going to go after the monkey until he kills it.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to Keep a monkey as a pet either but that’s easier for someone to say that loves monkeys but let’s to be around and work with them everyday which is how you would know how they would make bad pets by seeing their behavior first hand. Had this woman never seen a monkey or worked with them she may also be one of the people shopping for a monkey seeing she had a strong love for them. Most people don’t have the opportunity to work with monkeys so they feel their only option is to get one as a pet

My monkey has a master bedroom to itself. Not a cage. Theres a cage in there but the door is always open unless we are traveling with monkey. I got jungle gym, cargo nets, ropes, shelves up high I installed and always refresh toys. So far so good. Diapers arent as much of a problem. I use cut towels and wash a load every saturday. A lot of veggies I get from pantrys and grocery that are throwing them out but there not rotten. Eggs are easy proteins.

Even the best monkey pet owners will tell you to do your research, make the long term commitment that this animal will be your focus 24/7/365, be prepared for expensive medical care, diapers & food and keep in mind there is no such thing as monkey day care.

It would stick lolipops in the middle of its forehead and open cans of cat food and hide them all over it would reek. Then it would well.... Wack its yeah infront of eberyone that came over and throw poop at you. Just absolutely no. Hahaha.

No primate should be a pet. Monkey is not a dog. They live in complex social structure, which hardly can be achieved in human family. Without the kin, they can develop mental problems, followed by physical ones. Imagine a human baby living among monkeys. For good reasons it is restricted here in Europe. Have a nice day.

Agreed. Primates are not domesticated, will never be domesticated, they are highly intelligent, long-lived, have very specific dietary requirements and almost all are highly social and need to be in a diverse group of its own species. Maybe a few people are willing to devote their entire lives and transform their home to living with a monkey and will have decent outcomes, but that’s not the norm by any means. Just look on social media; how many adorable baby pet primates do you see? How many adorable adults do you see? Why do all those adults disappear? Where do they go? Why? They just don’t make appropriate pets for most people.

Nutritionally, monkey biscuits absolutely are a sufficient diet as far as it provides all the nutrients they need to be healthy. However it seems kinda cruel to not give them a variety of foods to them. If they have been given monkey biscuits from early on in their life they will eat them . Though squirrel monkeys do have the biggest brain to body ratio she's nuts if she thinks they are the smarter monkey or that they really are smarter than humans!
