Guest bio:
Joanna Moncrieff, MD is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London, and works as a consultant psychiatrist at the North East London Foundation Trust. She has been writing about the over-use and misrepresentation of psychiatric drugs since the 1990s and she has also researched and written about the history, politics and philosophy of psychiatry more generally. She is currently leading UK government-funded research on reducing and discontinuing antipsychotic drug treatment (the RADAR study), and collaborating on a study to support antidepressant discontinuation. In the 1990s she co-founded the Critical Psychiatry Network to link up with other, like-minded psychiatrists. She is the author of numerous papers and her books include A Straight Talking Introduction to Psychiatric Drugs Second edition (PCCS Books), published in September 2020, as well as The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs (2013) and The Myth of the Chemical Cure (2009) (Palgrave Macmillan).

To see the latest assertion that if you suffer from shyness you have ADHD. I phoned my daughter Zoe up. This was the conversation. Zoe is my 45 year old married daughter and a Mom of two kids and works as an accountant. A shy kid, never a bit of trouble. "Hello Zoe" "Hello Dad how's tricks" Alan: "Did you know you could have ADHD and should be on your way to see a psychiatrist". Zoe: "Oh yea how do you work that out". Alan: "Well do you remember as a kid you were quite shy weren't you?" Zoe: "Yea and what's that got to do with ADHD?" Alan: "I saw something online saying now that shyness and social anxiety is a sign of ADHD". Zoe: "Practically every type of human behavior under the sun is now a sign of ADHD, or if not that, it is some other disorder. So it is not the kid who runs out on the road without looking at traffic anymore, or somebody can't sit still for five minutes or can't even complete a house insurance form?". Alan: "Nope. Now it is somebody who likes crosswords, changes the radio station a lot or is shy". Zoe: "I see". Alan: "So are you getting a diagnosis then". Zoe: "ADHD is my superpower. It got me to being a married Mom of two kids and an accountant. I would probably be in the welfare queue or addicted if I didn't have it. So I don't see the point in getting it formally diagnosed. I don't need medication either. Look where I got with untreated ADHD". Then we had a 15 minute chat.

I resent that I am described as deficient and disordered and that I require a medical diagnosis and drugs. I fundamentally disagree with the life and society i have to live in. This modern, capitalistic, regimented lifestyle doesn't make sense to me. I would rather a much, much simpler life. That's not a disorder.

Hey all, I’d like to ask a question. I never took any ADHD medications. (Although my parents said if I had of been born 5-10 years later they would have given it to me) I had several years of a cocktail of medications for psychosis/mania/depression. I’ve been weening off over many years. However, now when I drink coffee, I can get extremely tired and just want to sleep. Can anybody please tell me the real reasons why stimulants can work like that? I have a good friend that their son takes a prescribed stimulant.I’m worried for them, and myself for that reason. You know, I don’t believe most pseudo science on brain chemistry. Thanks very much 🙏🙏🙏🙏

The most common drugs prescribed for ADHD include amphetamines (e.g. Adderall) and methylphenidates such as Concerta and Ritalin. All of these stimulant medications have a high propensity for abuse and addiction.

Im having a hard time getting through concerta withdrawal. But taking it one day at a time. I didn't abuse it. But became dependent. I had a diagnosis but i wasted all that time when i could have dealt with it naturally and avoided withdrawal

Sorry to hear@@aprilhassell1747 . How long were you taking Concerta and what was the dose if I may ask? Dr. Mark Horowitz's research says that tapering should follow a hyperbolic pattern (following a hyperbola shape, not a linear pattern) where the dose reductions are very small at lower doses. Good luck and hang in there. 🙏

@faitht3643 concerta 18 mg. For 4 years stopped had a baby. Back on same dose when son was 4 months old. Total of 7 year with the last year being the year ive been trying to stop it for good. Made it 5 months as the longest time off. Went back on because of withdrawal symptoms and fear. Only to not feel good while returning to it. It seems to be a drug you go on and stay on. And hope stress doesn't change things in your nervous system

@@aprilhassell1747 Sorry it's been so difficult to wean off of and that is the very real challenge experienced by so many. Hopefully by tapering very slowly, especially at the lower doses, you can minimize the withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Mark Horowitz is among the experts (including Dr. Joanna Moncrieff) who are featured in the BBC Panorama's documentary The Antidepressant Story and it mentions how tapering must be done slowly. One of the people profiled in the story, a former vet, his wife has been on ADHD medication for a very long time and created a schedule for her that tapers down to minute doses near the end. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hb2IfsZjt6y9eGQ.html While you're tapering, there are supplements that help with anxiety/depression like probiotics, Citicoline and Lion's Mane. I take Host Defense brand of mushroom supplements. They're organic and Paul Stamets, the founder, is a famous mycologist and has given presentations, interviews and TedTalks on the medical benefits (e.g. treating cancer) of mushrooms. www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323400 Take care and praying for you!

methylphenidate is a stimulant but in a totally different chemical class than amphetamine. Methamphetamine is addictive because it has a very short half life so the body rebounds fast creating addiction. Amphetamines in ADHD medications are different and last much longer, avoiding the need to retake and create the short waves that create addiction. Hard to say if people are addicted to ADHD meds or simply prefer being more functional in their lives.

@@lagomorphia9 no.. you are stuck either in a deception or promoting it knowing better. There is only the effect from surroundings in these times of destroyed families and mainstream insane propaganda, and the toxic chemicals forced into children from early age. It is a deep satanic world we live in. There is a reason why so many lives are destroyed or complicated with decease. It's intentionally. Do f not comply and be a better parent.

Nothing about the science behind the lack of dopamine stimulation and stimulants helping with task focus and motivation? Words are worthless without the backing science.
