Do Tattooed People Love Pain? | Tattoo Artists React

If you have any visible tattoos-even something really small-we guarantee that somebody has come up to you and said something along the lines of, “You must really love pain,” or “I bet you have a really high pain tolerance.” It’s happened to all of us. We asked our panel of artists if there is any truth to this seeingly idiotic notion, and they told us… well, you’ll have to watch to find out.
Normally we film Tattoo Artists React at a tattoo convention. We spend two days running around, grabbing people from their booths and asking them a bunch of different questions. COVID obliterated all of our plans, but we pressed on! During lockdown the only way the Inked team talked to each other was via video chat, so we figured, why not do the same thing for our beloved Tattoo Artists React series. Naturally, there were some challenges. It’s a little awkward not being in the room with our friends. And everybody’s home technology set-up is wildly different, so the perfectionist in us was a bit peeved about video quality. That being said, connecting and speaking with some of our favorite tattooers was invigorating. It was especially nice to talk about all of the nutty experiences that take place in tattoo shops around the world at a time when they were all closed. This season looks a lot different from any of the prior seasons, but that’s OK. You’ll still be laughing until your insides hurt at Kelly’s stories, you’ll still coo at every pet that ends up on screen and you’ll still be able to argue with each other in the comment section. New episodes will be posted every Friday. This is Tattoo Artists React - Pandemic Edition.

As a psychotherapist I had a client that was a cutter. We worked on family issues and she decided to get some ink and quit cutting. She came back in 2 years and was happy, working as a motorcycle mechanic, and insisted I see her tattoo. Her back and down her left leg was a beautiful serpent in multiple colors. It was beautiful. She took the emotional pain she had been carrying and dealt with it through the counseling and physical transformation of tattoo.

My first tattoo was to cover /draw attention away from some scars I have and my first thought was that the tattooing did actually feel kinda similar to cutting and it really helped that it was something beautiful and I felt so good afterwards! Also no addiction triggered or something

It's not so much "liking" it, as it is the mental clarity you have afterwards. When you're enduring the pain you mentally re-prioritize your life and your own perspective. It is a bit of an endorphin rush that you can feel afterward too. Then you always have the bonus of a visual relic/reminder afterward.

Well I mean, if someone is deliberately indulging in their kink unbeknownst to the tattoo artist that is something to be ashamed about because that removes any consent on their behalf. But there's nothing wrong with having kinks as long as it's consented upon by those involved or if tattooing gets you going then it's important to be respectful and controlling it so it doesn't cross any boundaries. I agree that some of their comments did feel like shaming though.

I realised that getting tattoos for me was a way to sift my focus from things I couldn't change in my body to things that I could and that it was a really good way for me to be happy in my body. From elementary school I was bullied and developed a real fucked up body image, I'm 27 now so it was a long way to go. The pain that comes with tattooing became kind of a form of meditation, way to physically feel the pain that I had from hating my body for all those years, still don't like it though, but I think it heals me. I have a full backpiece now and a couple of more tattoos on me and I have never been so happy in my body. And also I had a baby like a week ago and the pain of tattooing is nothing compared to that so after breastfeeding I'm going back for more tats 😂

I think people like the after effect of getting tattooed. Speaking from personal experience, getting tattooed often gives people a sense of euphoria and excitement. This leads to them thinking of what to get next, or as it's commonly referred to as "ink addiction". If you like the pain of getting tattooed, then it's common referred to as "masochism", which most people find very weird.

It’s a practice in meditation. Because you KNOW it’s going to hurt, after a while you know how much it’s going to hurt, but you know you need to go through it. You have control over it. It sucks, but you know where you stand, and you know it’s not going to ACTUALLY do damage. That said, when I’m getting tattoos I’m like “nope, never doing this again.” The minute it’s over I go “oh man, I can’t wait to do this again!”

I just love the process: getting to know the artist, hear their stories and then feeling the needle hit your veins and have that thick pigment punched into your skin. Being immersed in the environment where you hear the buzzing, loud metal music in the background and the slight tinge of sweat in the air is just a bonus. In some ways the process is more sacred than a relationship (would you let your girlfriend/boyfriend give you thousands and thousands of micro open wounds?) It's a tale of 2 people developing a trust and respect for eachother. Yes it is pain, after all it's broken down into stabbing and scratching motions but there is pleasure and beauty in consistency and honing a skill. Sorry I may sound like a fanatic but the art of tattooing is not just a job, artwork or a trend: It is a ritual to strengthen the body and mind and as beautiful as the art is it ages and changes with us and will die with us.

It's easy to meditate through the session, especially if my artist has a good numbing spray. But the healing part hurts worse for me, it feels like the worst sunburn I've ever had. My first tattoo was a pretty big piece on my back, On a sunburn! Nothing since has hurt more so I'm good with it

Love the feeling of being tattooed. The kind of scraping feeling on an open wound, almost like scratching a friction burn. It's a really cool feeling. Huge fan.

It's strange, but getting tattooed just doesn't hurt me. I'm pretty skinny, and even the tattoos I get right on top of my bones don't hurt me. My tattoo artists are always baffled. To me, it's just an intense pressure, the feeling of the vibrating needle in the skin, but there's just no real pain. I'm usually a little disappointed aboout it, because I keep having this thought, that you have to "earn" your tattoos by going through the pain, and I just don't experience that. But I suppose, lots of people would probably love to swap with me. XD

I think the psychological aspect of tattoos helps with the pain. The ink I have hurt, but you know in the front of your mind that you’re in a safe place and you know exactly why you’re in pain, so it takes away a lot of the bad psychological part away IMO. That’s just me. When I get asked “did it hurt?” I’ll say yes, but it wouldn’t deter me for getting more...

I didn't really find it painful, until close to five hours in and my artist was going over areas close to where he'd already tattooed. Then it started to get sore and uncomfortable, but it wasn't like being horrendously stabbed. When I went back for the second sitting it was almost a relief because I hadn't been able to scratch the area and it was quite satisfying. I've only been tattooed on my thigh though. Not sure if other areas will be more uncomfortable. And I've always regarded myself as having a low pain tolerance and was shitting myself before the first sitting. In fact the most painful and uncomfortable part was sitting in the same position for hours on end and my opposite leg constantly going numb.

I look at the pain as a means to an end. I enjoy the time I spend with my tattoo artists and sometimes even dose through parts of a procedure. It's the price we pay to have beautiful artwork and worth it in the long run. If you embrace the pain it won't hurt as much.

I had so much pain with neck tattoo and on my chest, but in 7hrs of work, i never had pause, because if you pause it, place where you getting tattoo gets cold and then when you return, pain is bigger, so yea, i did 7 hours without half minute break. Also, when i did some painful tattoo, i meditate in that moment like repeating one word over and over and then sometimes i fall asleep while i am getting tattoo. But yes, i dont like pain and its so painful sometimes that i need to scream inside my head. I didnt scream aloud or something like that, but its pretty bad.

I got my first tattoo done earlier this week, about 4 hours (my entire inner forearm is covered) and we took 3 breaks inbetween of like around 15/20 mins to grab a drink/some food/bathroom break. I never asked for a break because I didn't need any, I felt totally great the whole way through. I would say the pain was minimal and it was kind of a nice sensation,I definitely would've been able to sleep had the music in the background not been so loud. I'm much more bothered by how itchy my tattoo is at the moment haha.

I’ve dealt with pain so bad that I was shaking and vomiting, and that was in the ICU being dosed with IV pain meds. No, I don’t like pain but being tattooed is nothing like what I’ve already been through and what I’ve been through was out of my control. Tattooing is in my own control and I get the beauty of the end product.

My disability (brittle bones disease) had me in a lot of pain because of bone breaking & all. Super hard pains. Getting tatoo hurts a bit, but it's meh. Like "oh okay". I was almost disapointed for my first because eeeeeeeeeverybody hyped up the pain like "you won't be able to sit through" and honestly it was just a little pain. Sure some part on my back hurt a little when you tatoo there but nothing that bad. I'm doing my 4th in less than a month & i'm good. And the result, I just love seeing my tatoos finished.
