Hip hop specifically shouldn't care about the grammys. It's a genre that was started out of the ghetto by black youth who created something unique to enjoy and express themselves. Remember the grammys didn't even recognize hip hop at first. Yet we fight for their attention. Why do we need these institutions to validate our significance?

The more you research the Grammys the more you realize they don’t matter as much. It’s nuts to me Mariah Carey, arguably one of the most successful and heralded artist of all time, only has 5 Grammys. As others have state Nicki not only doesn’t win but she doesn’t even get nominated. There is a clearly political angle to it and that sorta takes away from it’s importance.

The Grammys matter to every artist. It’s the most prestigious award in music history. However, the politics behind it is what makes people hate them. You shouldn’t have to be an industry puppet or try to be everyone’s BFF in the industry in order to get one. HOWEVER, The Grammys does not determine an artist’s worth and impact in the industry. Grammys absolutely still matter. It is still symbolizes the highest standard of artistic excellence. Are there snubs sometimes? For sure! Are there elements of politics & popularity in it? Of course. But it's no different than an election. You're gonna have a bunch of people who vote for a politician because they studied and they believe in them and then a bunch of people who only vote for who they like more or who is most popular. Same thing with voting for NBA or NFL MVP. Not a perfect system but it still matters to the players who compete. The Grammys still attempt to be a standard for artistic excellence, inspiration and creativity. They don't always get it right. But most recording artists, producers, engineers, etc are inspired by the opportunity to have their names in history next to Stevie, Quincy, Pharrell, Prince, Dylan, Beyonce, Carole King, Jay, Michael, Lauryn, etc.

There are plenty of artists that are well deserving of accolades and never received it on an award show. Hearts were still touched, tickets are still bought, fans are forever made, with or without an award. Will I ever think less of an artist for not having one? No. Do I think more of them? No. Public opinion cares. In private when you're listening to your favorite artists on speaker, or earpods, reliving, relating... how many grammys they have would never cross my mind. It changes nothing for real fans who are just here for the art.

The GRAMMYs stopped mattering when the most popular music was no longer the best. Back in the day, most of the population listened to the same songs. And the most popular songs from each genre became popular hits. You play Hall and Oates in a older black person's house and they will know it. The same goes for older whites and Stevie Wonder. They were listening to the same radio stations. There are so many niche genres in music today. It's impossible to be in tune with all of them. I bet less than 2% of the general population listened to all the albums up for best album.
