Trust me, so are we!! (Kings fan here). So many of the serious fans saw multiple red flags. The two trade requests as well as being below average defensively. The Kings being a defense first team trade all that for player who is weak defensively. i have to believe a lot of this is between the ears. Some players don't 'want' to be good.... they have to good. PL gives the impression he would 'like' to be good, but his body language and commitment doesn't back that up. So.... lucky you guys to have escaped.

Big strong talented centre who can take games over when he feels like it. The problem has always been it just doesn’t happen enough and it looks like he thinks it’s good enough or is indifferent. He probably doesn’t ever become a 1st line c. Not good enough defensively, terrible on draws, plays soft at times, not a great passer or playmaker. Addition by subtraction for Winnipeg. A extremely frustrating player to watch.

Honestly, PLD was pretty cool in Winnipeg. His teammates spoke highly of him etc. He always had time to do spots on Bar Down Hockey etc. But I think PLD is into using his talents to live the good life, vs being a lover of hockey. He’s like a smart kid in school who never learnt to study, and then gets wiped out in University when it gets tougher. Then you give him what he wants (Good shopping, restaurants, the beach) and then he is maybe concentrating on THAT instead of hockey. He’s like a child who gets a bad baby sitter, and demands Pop Tarts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Alls good until his teeth fall out. My 2c

I watched a lot of jets games when he was here and it seemed he would show some effort( on average) every fifth game, and could dominate a game when he wants to. Why he does not give his all every game is baffling. What option does LA have. I say play him on top line consistently and force him to answer the call and take the heat. Money is spent anyway.
@antioch1975

Compliance buyout, especially since he is under 26 they will only pay 1/3 of his total salary but they will have to immediately do it at the end of the season. A franchise only gets 2 CP's. LA hasn't used any. The only cap hit they'll take is the signing bonus. They can then fire Blake and Marc Bergevin since I believe he had some say about the signing. Anyway, PLD becomes a free agent after the buyout. LA eats the contract and trade but if they are smart, just start over. I think Kopi will retire after next season and they have pieces they can sell for picks or prospects. Just my opinion.

What line did pld play with last year with Winnipeg? Linemates? I was not for this trade because it included villardi. That being said he's here now and to be fair he's had some less than average Linemates. Anderson Dolan who was waived and unclaimed and a rookie (lafferie) who would not be on the team if Ardvanson was not injured. McClellan has not patience whatsoever and keeps moving him from center to wing and back to center again. If Kopitar and danault had the same Linemates as pld I'd guess that would both have very similar numbers.
@goon8058
@goon8058 4 ай бұрын
A good chunk of his playing time was alongside Kyle Connor and to be honest he played very well on a line with him for stretches. I'm actually shocked at how poorly the season has gone for PLD, I expected him to be the Kings second line center and Danault to be the third line shut down center. It's not just the Jets trade but LA had to trade Walker, Petersen and Durzi just to make the cap work on top of losing Vilardi, Iaffalo and Kupari that's five NHL players on not bad contracts to bring in one top six centerman who isn't playing like a top six center.

The agreement with the players association makes teams slaves to their best players. There used to be a time when you could send an underperforming player to the minors to get the message across to the player that more is expected for the money they are being paid. That option is no longer available to coaches and teams.

You are partially correct. Gaboriks contract was horrible. But, Blake found a way to make it worse. He could have placed Gaborik on LTIR (which is what Ottawa did) and the cap hit would have disappeared. Instead, he traded Gaboriks 4.87 mil deal for Phaneuf and his 7 mil deal. Ottawa retained 25% so LA was paying Phaneuf 5.25 (about 300k more than Gaborik). While Phaneuf could get onto the ice, it was very obvious that he could no longer play effectively. He was so bad that Blake had to buy him out. Both Gaborik and Phaneufs contract ran out after 2021, but because we had to buy out Phaneuf, he had a 1 mil cap hit against the Kings for 2 more seasons. The devil is in the details and Ottawa was laughing all the way to the since the trade opened up over 5 mil in CAP space for them. Hope that helps you understand the situation more clearly, especially when it comes to Blake and his ability to evaluate talent and negotiate bad contracts (Kovalchuk, Petersen, 0:02 Phaneuf, PLD, etc.).

LA hockey is still a small entity in a huge metropolis. There’s a French Canadian connection here that has been foundational to growing the sport. PLD had his dad nearby when he was traded to Winnipeg. His agent Pat Brisson is still living in LA. Most of the hockey players tend to live in one circumscribed area by the beach..Hermosa Manhattan Redondo Beach..not far from the practice facility. If you are not readily a team player..aren’t motivated by that…this is a pretty crowded space. Hopefully PLD will find a way to contribute. I watched him a lot when he was with CBJ..really from the start he was a hot and cold energy guy. Fabulous moments with very exciting rallies…and then nothing. Does analytics not sniff out that elite players can be overly sensitive..to location to team dynamics…and end up being a very expensive investment that drains the Cap coffers.

People forget that the 2nd round pick also included in this deal was the pick Kings got for Sean Durzi from Coyotes. Sean Durzi himself (a defenseman) has 28 points to PLD’s 20. So Kings gave up Durzi to pull this trade off as well as Vilardi (20 pts) in almost half the games PLD has played, then Iafallo (18 pts) and project player Kupari…but still an NHL level player. Yes, it’s not just about points. Defense maybe ? Nope, PLD is -16 !!!! The whole trade is an absolute disaster and Blake should be fired as he had a big part in TM’s firing.

I am all for players having the right to play wherever they want. That said he just seemed like someone that had issues not only in the locker room multiple times but also consistency. Teams will always think they can change a player or give him an environment to thrive. So etimes it works because I think in comparing the 4 major sports hockey is that sport where your ceiling or usefulness is not linear. That said that situation had so many red flags in multiple places it almost seems weird LA fell for it. That said maybe he will turn it around. Personally I would be surprised but you never know.

I’m not a fan of the Kings but understand to some degree why GM Blake decided to try to go big with Dubois: the Kings had yet to win a playoff series since having hoisted a Stanley Cup in 2014. The execution was badly flawed considering PLD’s attitude issues with the CBJ and Jets. PLD’s porn production is IMO why this season is his seventh that has featured NHL action while Nail Yakupov and Jake Virtanen only lasted six such seasons before having chosen to move on, for the most part, at least, temporarily, to the KHL (Yakupov, long-term; Virtanen, for one season before the Russian military invasion of Ukraine would prompt him to flee Russia as soon as he could).

He got tired of everywhere he played it was a colder climate. He wanted the warmer weather cause he felt he deserved it. And I hear he wants to be know as PD and not PLD now, it's an LA thing I guess 🤷 Not hating on the guy, but he got what he wanted, and he has to step it up I guess. If he doesn't though, not my concern cause he's not on the team I cheer for.

That move was unnecessary, Dubois made his intentions clear and he wanted to play in MTL but LA went above and beyond basically giving up a whole 2nd line unit and draft pick just to signing him 8.5m long term. Thirst was real

As a Calgary fan here in Calgary. Nobody and I mean NOBODY can match the level of disappointment than Huberdeau. It’s the worst contract in NHL’s 100 year history by a huge margin. Huberdeau plays lazy, no hussle, no heart and he can’t score. He routinely misses on empty net goals. So chin up LA with PLD. You got the second worst contract but you don’t have the worst contract because we have the worst

I guess, or to me it seems, Pierre Luc played well enough to garner a great contract in L.A. He sure hasn't lived up to his end of the deal there. I feel bad for them, but maybe he will turn it around yet. Think positive.

People in here acting like they are true Kings fans lol. Stop. What did Winnipeg receive?? A man made of glass, a role player who was a good “King” nothing more, and an AHL player that every organization has 11 of. Stop. Let us answer this question after the playoffs are over. Either way it’s irrelevant. Yes PLD makes probably 2 or 3 million per year too much but it’s all a moot point r now.

They honestly weren't that far off, if he played as well as he should, he could have helped bring them to that point. They reminded me of the 2019 blues, not alot of offensive talent, but a strong defensive system with depth all the way down the lineup.
