Do They Speak English In Taiwan? 台北人英文超強?

Traveling in #Taiwan has been on many of my subscribers' minds. One question they always ask, though, is do they speak much English in Taiwan? Is it easy to get around without speaking Mandarin Chinese? My answers have always been positive but I never really had any first-hand experience. To get a deeper understanding of the questions whether it's easy to travel Taiwan not knowing Chinese, I decided to do a little #SocialExperiment
p.s. extremely sorry about the pants incident…

Taiwanese have the opportunity to study English since elementary school. They do not speak English despite their education. Taxi Drivers in the Philippines speak better English (no sarcasm intended).

That's why I love Taiwanese people, they are so helpful, even if somebody is speaking a little English they are still willing to help as much as they can. I never had any problem when I'm visiting there except once with a very old taxi driver but still managed to get where I want at the end. Thumbs up 👍 for this kind of experiment.. creative

Southern Taiwanese are way more kind and hospitable than Northen Taiwan. But I'm not sure about their English is good or not. Some very traditional stores or restaurants they even barely speak Mandarin. They speak Taiwanese.

Very nice video, and it really shows the always wonderful and lovely + friendly Taiwanese people! :-) Taipei has improved alot towards English speaking tourists. When I went there for the first time back in 2005 it was really difficult to find people speaking English unless you stayed in high class hotels or restaurants - but during the last decade that changed so nowadays you can basically always find someone around you to ask for help in English. It would definitely be different if you did the same social experiment in other places on Taiwan though... Keelung, Hualien, Miaoli, Chiayi, Taitung, Penghu island to name a few :-)

Henrik Matzen I agree with you. It makes sense that there could be higher percentage of people in Taipei that speak English as there are more large corporations in Taipei, also there are more universities. By the way, I've never been to Penghu. (I've been to Green Island.) Penghu is on the top of my travel bucket list. ☺

@johnnychang461

No, very rare. As far as I have experienced in the U.S, if you speak Chinese to the people on the street, mostly they don't give a f to you. Few people would even tell you to go back to China(!?). Trust me, it's normal. Taiwanese people are so nice to the foreigners. But it doesn't seem that most of other countries would be that nice,too. English is still the general language in the world nowadays.If you don't speak it, good luck. btw I think Japanese people are also nice!

I loved this because I went from Korea to Taiwan. In Korea, if they didn't speak English they just said "sorry, I don't speak English." In Taiwan, they made it work even when I tried to speak in mandarin (which I butchered). Both countries are very kind, but the way people go out of their way to be kind in Taiwan is like no other.

Wow! What an amazing country. I am so impressed how polite everyone is when you just start speaking to them in English assuming they speak it. Everyone was so nice and happy to help in English. We have been studying Mandarin like crazy to try to communicate as best we can while there, but this gives us such peace of mind knowing that so many people are happy and able to help tourists whose Mandarin skills still have much room to improve. We get to meet our adopted daughter in Tainan in two weeks!

I am a HongKonger who has finished the journey in Taipei last week. I used English about 75 to 80 percent of conversations all the time because my Mandarin is very poor. Most of people especially Atayals (泰雅族) in Wulai can speak English well. However, it is my first journey in Taiwan which is a very nice place to go.

Nice video. In Taipei I find ordering at a breakfast shop the most challenging as most of the owners do not speak english and they rarely have an english menu, also because they have such a big menu it's often hard to work out what order if you can't read or speak Mandarin. With most traditional taiwanese restaurants, they often don't have many options to choose from so it's easier to order. Google translate has become my best friend while here with the real time camera translate feature, but this has trouble with some traditional style fonts and when there is a vertical menu. Also I thought there would be much more english translations staying in the area that surrounds the universities because of all the international students, but I suppose most of them are learning Mandarin so will be able to get around much easier by using what they have learned. In my opinion from having visited Thailand a few times and now living in Taiwan, Taiwanese people who can speak english do it better than Thais and there are less translation errors, but Thailand is better setup for international tourists as most places in the city will have a translation, especially shop name signs which I was surprised that hardly any of them had this in Taiwan.

Think I'd have any luck in the other large cities? I might be moving to Taichung later this year. Don't think my level of Chinese is doable enough to get around (especially reading).

Haha most people find reading the most difficult but if I believe most (75%?) of the restaurants in Taiwan (exclude the really local ones) offer English menus and I went to high school in Taichung. You'd be surprised how many expats there are in Taichung and they seem to get by just fine lol from my observation anyway

Thank you for making this video. I am currently applying to teach English, TEFL, over in Taiwan and I was horrified that I needed to learn the native language. I will still try my best to learn it, but it know it is a very hard language to learn. If I do secure a position it will be a year. It looks like the people are very friendly and know English well enough to help out if needed. You helped give me confidence that I am making a good decision. :)

I think another important factor is that it was filmed in Taipei. I volunteered in a very rural place in Central Taiwan and hardly anybody knew English haha
