One thing I’ve noticed is that many of the old DSM/IX/x2 series of amps don’t use thermal compound. They use some sort of material between the transistors and heatsink that looks somewhat like cardboard. And these are amps with intact warranty seals, so it’s DEFINITELY from the factory. Not sure if this is something that deteriorates with time.
@Crazylogix007

It should be thermal compound, promise. It can be really dried out and just crumble.

i have this amp in my truck right now, its fully working, a friend gave this - after looking for one- I'm younger (I'm 33) and never had an A-class amp, and the stories from the old guys are true, its better sounding than the new ones = and they don't make one that compares to these old ones anymore - sound quality is equal to a PSaudio amp... if you could buy one (good luck) pick it up .. audio-files buyers

@Crazylogix007
@Crazylogix007 4 жыл бұрын
You can check voltage to the op amps, there should be plus/minus 15 volts on them for power. Check video number 7 on this repair for how to test the little circuit that separates main ground from audio ground. Your amp probably tried to come on and pull ground through the RCA shields. It could have damaged it in the head unit too.

@Crazylogix007
@Crazylogix007 4 жыл бұрын
I thoroughly check all old amps to make sure there are no leaking caps. In some amp lines certain caps are known to leak. I know the Rockford HD and DSM have the small caps that leak. Phoenix Gold has some that leak. With older amps I suggest keeping an eye on them, but won't replace them if they don't show any reason to. You could ask Jason K. in the old school amp repair guidance Facebook group, he is a very knowledgeable tech who does a lot of old PPI amps. Just post your models and ask.

Very first thing I would do is move all the switches and all the pots (gain, crossover, etc) back and forth a bunch. They get dirty on old amps and start to cause all kinds of sound issues. I would first work all the switches and pots (not powered) serveral times and then try again. Dirty switches and pots can cause all kinds of funny problems. After that is sounds like there could be a problem in the input section or the class D output driver. If the switches and pots don't fix it, you will have to have it looked at. I have a different amp that seems to be doing something like this, if I get it fixed I will comment again. But due to moving, I am still a good month away from getting back to the workbench.

Not sure who would have any replacements, If you find out, come back and post it, I know there are bound to be lots of people who would love to know.

@@djgblaze1of1 things like that if you can snag them cheap are great, then if you find a old amp missing it, buy it cheap cause it looks rough. Then you add your badge and you have a much nicer amp in your install or collection.
