It takes more time than most people realize to write a story readers will love. This is my first novel filled with great scenes and lots of conflict. I began scribbling in 2019. I believe I have a memoir/creative about the battle between headstrong, resourceful, fun loving nonagenarians newly in love and their younger family members who are not thrilled by this new union. The story is narrated by the main character's cat. I began sharing my early drafts with my target audience (50+ and/or those wrestling with memory issues), but it turns out that readers of all ages more than anything, are most excited about the sass of the cat! So my next step (after I have manuscript number five printed up) is hiring a voracious reader who loves her two cats -- a "cat consultant" if you will. She'll make sure the cat's voice is consistent, movements and reactions are timely, and attitude is witty while retaining important cat-like perceptions! I have not yet ruled out a phone call to someone in your group, Kelly, because I am totally on the fence about publishing myself or searching for an agent or small publisher who will tweak my little gem into something amazing. I already spent too much on an editor ($2K) only to have a local book club a few weeks later suggest that I hire an editor. The book club however, was very helpful with both praise and awkward silence. So I looked more closely. I have started a 1x per mo. newsletter -folks can sign up on my website: beyondbucketlist dot com. I love your no nonsense way of communicating and appreciate your suggestions of testing, testing, testing. That's what multibillion dollar companies do with products and services. They utilize test markets to see if they have something people want to buy. Thank you again for keeping me on track.

I appreciate your ability to give positive and constructive advice with such enthusiasm and a smile, over what must be a very frustrating and reoccurring experience of people writing to you before working out what they really want to say. This video has saved me from becoming one of them. I've been editing my memoir for many months, before having written the concluding paragraphs-which deal with how a person can redeem themselves from their own misconceptions. You just revealed to me a new misconception.

Thanks for writing, friend! It's not so much frustration on our end as it is making it a clearer and more defined process for the author. We really want people to be prepared and have the best book they can put out there. And keep in mind, the advice here doesn't necessarily apply to memoirs! But it sounds like you're making great strides with your book.

I've wanted to make that "free phone call" to kn-litrary for a long time, but keep putting it off till I have the free time to commit to everyday writing and be able to apply whatever advice I'm given. Hope to speak with one of your editors soon.

Haha! I looked at this video just now. Good thing a lot of people like my idea. I tend to do things backwards, but I'm learning. My memoir is going well, almost ready to start getting pages together for my writing group and then editing. I might have two memoirs. Well we'll see. Love all the content.

Always a pleasure to hear from your bright and shining face Kelly. You have gained a lot of wisdom in the twenty years you have been practicing and honing your skills as an editor. This message gives me confidence that I am on the right track. Great advice. Great reminder. Great encouragement. Kelly, I appreciate your message. I will also add that if you are in the process as I am of writing my second book it is never too late to teach your content and do proof of content while you are writing it. I know I will. As Kelly says it can only improve the book. I am excited to do this. Thank you!

Kelly, how would one go about this process if the book is a memoir?
@knliteraryarts
@knliteraryarts 2 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent question! This video is more aimed at the self-help and inspirational books. If you're writing a memoir, you don't have to be teaching people. You could start building an online author platform that focuses on the memoir subject. Again, this is something we could help with at KN Literary. Booking your first call is free and we could further answer this question! knliterary.com/schedule/ We look forward to hearing from you.

I would need more examples of testing the content of the book. For example, what did you do with your book s content before writing it, Kelly?
@knliteraryarts
@knliteraryarts Жыл бұрын
Kelly had years and years of experience as a professional in the publishing industry, so her book was a reflection of that experience and expertise. If you're looking to write a spiritual book, maybe host a talk or series at your local library, college or spiritual centers. They're always looking for presenters! What would be your genre, Silvia?

How do I test out a self-reflection journal with brain, emotion, spiritual question and discovery process. I ahve shown friends chapters and gotten input. Some have said they would love to see inspiration cards to go with the books or in addition to the books (I have one in process at Balboa. I have 5 more planned). Thank you Kelly. Good info as usual. Great question, Brenda! Maybe you could host a group and work through some of the self-reflection exercises at your home or maybe at a local library or writer's group. Friends are great for feedback, but sometimes we need to get unbiased strangers in there too! And we love a good card set with an inspirational book!

Hi, KN, I am wondering what the requirements are for putting citations in a book that I write. I heard it's more relaxed than writing a paper, but I don't want to plagiarize either. Google isn't helping much. Maybe you could do a video on this? Thanks!
@knliteraryarts
@knliteraryarts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia! It really depends on what style you're writing in. I would recommend picking up the style book that you're writing in (like AP or Chicago) and they will have the info on citation. Purdue Owl is a great place to start owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html

@@knliteraryarts Thank you. Do I have to put in-text citations after each new idea the way I would for a college paper, or can I be more relaxed about that part in a book?

Great question, Silvia! The testing is going to be different depending on the genre and approach of your book. You can start small, maybe talking to friends and family first, and then maybe put on a talk or series at your local library or community organization that supports your message.

Is this something I would do even if I hire a ghost writer?
@knliteraryarts

Hi, Melinda! Some of the biggest bestsellers out there were ghost written. So, yes! You need to make sure your ideas will land with people before putting it into a book. It's still your ideas. But bringing on a ghost writer to your team is perfectly normal.

Hi, Leatrice! I would recommend trying a writing exercise like the one we have here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7GPe8hip72XaGw.html It gets 100 points written about your book. You could then pick out and connect something like 20 or 25 points and then build a book outline from there. Then you have a clear roadmap on the story you want to tell! We also have people on our team who specialize in planning out your book if you'd like to book a free call with us, Leatrice! knliterary.com/schedule/
