We are renovating our house and adding sound Insulation between the bedroom walls. I always recommend this to my clients as it helps the home feel more private and comfortable. Would you insulate your interior walls? What type of insulation?

There are rafter baffles, one company called durovent, makes theme. They staple between the rafters and top of the wall to create an air channel allowing you to insulate up to the wall and close to the roof while still allowing ventalation.

Use whatever to make absolutely sure you are not blocking the ventilation under the roof. Then, what type of insulation you use makes little difference, but leave no gaps and don’t compress it. I’m from Sweden, visited NZ in 1992, loved it!

We have those in Canada as well. I renovated the porch here from a flat ceiling to a cathedral ceiling. I made it so that there was a 2 inch air space using 4 to 6 inch 2 x 2 square wood blocks. The blocks were where the reflecto material (shiny side facing up towards the under side of the roof sheathing) was stapled into as well as the first layer of 2 inch rigid foam. This created an air space from the soffits to the ridge vent, then 4 inches more of rigid foam, vapour barrier, the reflecto barrier again but facing down towards the inside of the room. Then 3/4 inch thick strapping so that the ceiling planks could be screwed into. Pot lights, variable fan and a skylight and it looks amazing. Scotts application is a lot different than the one I just described though. Cheers Scott from East Canada👍🇨🇦 P.S. Happy Belated Jess🎁🎈🎉

I have a similar aged house. It had insul-fluff in the roof. I was told, " If it's dry- lay Batts over it. If its damp remove it and then Batts". I did the former with Pink batts over the top. I later relined my bathroom including the ceiling. Put the single layer of R2.8 Batts back in. Several years after that, we went with 'Warm up New Zealand' program and that part of the roof wasnt good enough. The company layed green polyester blankets over the top of the Batts for the whole house. Then did underfloor polyester as well. Made a huge difference! I have the same issue where the rafters join the top plate on the walls. We bevelled the edge of the blanket to match the rafters angle to maintain the venting, with a small loss of insulation thickness at the edges. And yes our house has a crap ton of framing in walls and roof! Heavy terracotta tiles is why.

That fiberboard looks similar to what we have in older houses in Hawaii, particularly along the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island. We call it canec, and they were used for both ceiling and wall lining between the 1930s and 1960s. The boards were byproducts, made from sugarcane fibers during Hawaii's Sugar Industry. When the plants manufactured the boards, they were typically treated them with inorganic arsenic materials to serve as termite treatment. Pretty cool to see similar products being used in New Zealand

Hey Scott I used Terra Lana wool insulation for my ceilings. One layer of 90mm fitted between the ceiling joists and then another layer of 90mm over the top running the opposite way to the first layer. Tucking it as far as I can to the rafter wall plate connection. Still maintaining an airflow gap between the rafters. Made a huge difference with my reno project. We are nearly in th same boat with a 50s house and no insulation so have inuslated the exterior walls and sound insulation in the internal walls. We are located in Christchurch. All the best and keep up the good work and keep the great videos coming. Cheers Jonesy

In Finland we install kind of "risers" at the end in the sub-roof so we can blow-in more insulation. It is just some sort of heavy-duty cardboard that is stapled from the wall to the bottom of the rafters (leaves the rafter height for ventilation). Just about all insulations here are done with blown-in glass-wool or other similar more "human-friendly" materials like wood or mineral fiber products. Most old houses get a significant improvement just from adding 10mm of blown insulation on top of old batts because the blowing the insulation gets to all the gaps. Having this go over the ceiling rafters also removes any heat-bridging. At least Knauf and a company named "ecoinsulation" seem to be doing this in New Zealand as well.

we have dealt with similar situation in homes in New York. We were also renovating houses with high air tightness standards, so we used a blend of rigid foam and mineral wool insulation to get the R value up to code. Basically put 1/2" x 1/2" strips with the roof deck then cut the foam board tight and push against the 1/2" strip. After that we filled the cavity with mineral wool or second layer of foam. essentially, we ended up with 1/2" air gap and plenty of insulation. hope this helps.

Hey Scott. To insulate the bedroom ceiling you can pan the rafters to create a cavity between the pan and the roof decking down where the wall meets the roof. Then you can insulate right up against the panning. This is a common problem/practice in Canada. We do it all the time. You can use the same technique as you would to pan a joist cavity for a cold air return. We use prefabricated rigid foam pans but you can use a product like Thermopan or tin or cardboard, whatever is appropriate in your climate.

I used that foamboard insulation (think king span), to slide down the gap and was able to leave a small gap on top for air circulation. cut it to size with a long blade ( like those break off blades) at full extension. Takes a bit of time but less clean up rather than doing it with a saw

Good to know that BRANZ recommends covering over the Pinex - we took ours down in the kitchen and laundry last year when we remodelled and I'm not really keen to go through that again in the rest of the house. 100% going for the overlay next time (we already had insulation installed in the roof last year too, so one less thing to worry about).

You can make it even easier by simply skim coating the Pinex. Your plasterer should know the simple prep required. Even undulating ceilings will coat and paint perfectly. You absolutely cannot tell the difference once painted with flat ceiling white.

Here in Canada, we would put glass fiber or rockwool in between the studs, then overlap them on top to get the thickness, or just blown in insulation, or a combination of the two. For the roof ventilation, you might have access to what I've called Moore vents, or Mor-vents, otherwise called rafter vents. They provide the air space you need in between the roof rafters to allow insulation to be installed without worrying about blocking that airflow.

Scott... we've all struggled with props when hanging ceiling plasterboard by ourselves. BUT... joy-oh-joy, if you go to your local builder's hire yard ( here in Australia it's Kennards) and get a plasterboard lifter. They fold down and you can put in the back of your car. These lifters can do sheets up to 4.2m long. And they have wheels so you can move ceiling sheet into location. And cheap to hire... from memory about $100 a day. Love your videos... brings back memories of my own renovation activities, before the back and knee gave up.
