Increased surface area. At first it wont work as fast because the water needs to be cooled by the ice. But once the water temp comes down, it is touching the can in a whole lot more places than just the ice would, and therefor cools the can quicker than just ice.

@johnhurtmeАй бұрын
Ok as an alcoholic (retired) who used to sometimes have to buy his beer hot because the tramps at the gas station were too lazy to stock the cooler. The best way to rapidlubcppl one is to wrap with a wet paper towel and sprinkle with salt all the way around. 20in on the freezer situated right by the blower outlet, will make it cold enough that your hand will stick to the paper and will nearly frost a mug pouring it up. Sodium nitrate (table salt dilutes readily into ice or water and lowers the freezing point of it. That's why they salt the roads in an ice or snow storm. It lowers the melting point so that a 30 degree road still won't set up ice, known as supercooled water. Water makes complete surface coverage with the exterior of the can because it is a fluid unlike chunks of ice with only a contact patch the water is colder than ice and has 100% contact this cooling it faster. It's the same principal as an ice cream freezer the ice cream salt turns the ice into supercooled water and the aluminum container spins inside that water causing the contents to freeze.
@lordbinkyАй бұрын
Regular iodized table salt will drop the temperature of water. You can feel it happen, just saturate the water with salt and feel before and after.
@lordbinkyАй бұрын
Yeah it's weird, so doing it to ice will make the ice liquid again as well as colder than the ice it came from.

30 years ago I heard that if you put rock salt in your cooler it would get your drink colder and stay colder longer. So we got invited to a party at a friend's house being held outside and l filled up the cooler with beer and ice. Then survived on a little rock salt. 30 minutes later at the party l opened the cooler to find a solid block of ice. I left the lid open and an hour later chisled or a beer and it was frozen solid. Yep! Those beers stayed a lot colder a lot longer than using straight ice! I've had people tell me no way, because salt melts ice and they use rich salt to melt the ice on their walkways and steps. All I can say is, try it! But if you are going to a party, make sure your buddy has a lot of extra beer!😂
