I live in Illinois in a far south Chicago suburb. It has been in the 90’s here. I have six outside chicks and 11 babies. The babies are inside in my dining room in their brooders. The outside chickens have a plastic tarp completely covering their the roof of their chicken run. They have water. My husband checks their water twice a day. I check their food daily. And we intermittently check on them throughout the day. So far they are doing fine.

this is one of the reasons why I moved my coop and run to under the tree on the west side of the house because where they were it got so hot in the coop and run it was horrible so I moved them and it has been so nice under that tree, but it nearly killed me building it with scraps and not having all the materials needed as they girls were still using the coop and run until I got the coop and run ready, after all is said and done the coop run looks like a mess, so I am thinking of calling it tragedy and hope. it is a tragedy it looks like crap but hope in that it will keep the girls safe from teh heat and predators.

We have enclosed runs, too, and when I know a heat wave is coming, I'll wet down the ground in the runs in the morning, and again part way through the day if it dries out, and I fill extra rubber feed dishes with cool water for them to stand in, and add ice if needed. I hadn't thought to put frozen milk jugs inside the coop, that's a great idea, especially for those times when it stays hot all night.

I set up a small cooling “pond” (short bucket) with almost submerged bricks to stand on. Of my 8 different heritage breed 1-year-olds, smarty-feathers M’Lady, my LightBrahma who is not as heat tolerant as I had read when selecting breeds, hogs the pond even on coolish days! But my sweetest CreamLegbar Melody won’t use it no matter how hot she gets💔 I haven’t frozen jugs yet, will make freezer space before we get another 115🍳F spike again! Sonoma County CA/WILDFIRE🔥COUNTRY. Even in full drought with our river nearly disappeared, I kept them OK by misting & spraying acre-feet onto their metal roof and throughout their run. Also made a makeshift air-conditioner & ice treats. More tall plants, vines (chayote, hops, loofah🎉), shade cloth, umbrellas & opening a small field this week (watching carefully for hawks) Another hot tip: old desert flocks were protected with burlap & a sprinkler dripping over the super-heated metal roofing I inherited. Local feedstore told me that one & that they had tragically lost all their chickens one nasty heat spike.😢

Living in the AZ desert, temps are heading toward and above 110. Our coops are built under a big mesquite tree, so almost constant shade. We also have shallow pails of water for them to stand in, and we freeze water bottles to put in their water/pools to keep water cool. I love the frozen berries idea! We haven’t done it yet this summer, but we usually have a soaker hose on a timer to wet down the ground. Attracts a lot of flies, and it smells, but keeps the ground cool and moist. Until we get the soaker hose timer hooked up, I’ve just been spraying the ground down a few times a day. 😊 have been raising chickens since the “lockdown” and no heat casualties yet! 🤞🤞🤞🤞

DollarTree has metallic tablecloths (54" x 104" or 4.5 x 8.6 feet) that provide my birds and me with a means to reflect the burning sunlight on the cheap! Put 'em silver side out--as a bonus, when I taped a piece over my kitchen window, the harsh sunlight gave the rainbow-patterned side a cheery glow. Be aware they'll tear like a chip bag if they're ripped, but you can clip 'em with clothespins onto fences and branches to make shade. I just draped one over some bushes where my birds like to congregate. Sure, my place looks like an homage to foil-wrapped baked potatoes--but these posh birds ain't baking, and that's what counts.

Not silly at all. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with. Do you drink the water or do you filter it? Help. I have ground squirrels. I won’t harm them. Relocating will take a ton of effort. They can dig down 6feet! I tried hard wire cloth on the bottom of their coop’s little run and the squirrels dug, then put dirt over the wire. They hauled out all of the dirt under neath by burrowing! I was petting the squirrel through the hardwire cloth on the bottom of the run!!!! Good grief. These ground squirrels are costing me a fortune in feed. I bought a big bag of grower feed by mistake and instead if returning it, I decided to just feed the squirrels it outside of the run in order to give my chickens a chance at eating their food. My roosters will jump and smack me with their legs, but they’ll stand right next to the 3 squirrels and let them eat up their food. There are now a couple of squirrels that look like ground hogs - from such a great diet. I think I will need to trap and relocate at least 20 of these poops. But, more will follow, so do you have any suggestions?

@rainbowconnected

Could you switch to feeding at set times and only giving the chickens what they will eat while you're there? I doubt the squirrels will show up while you're present and that would at least save you money on feed. You might be able to do that for a week or two and the squirrels would learn that there wasn't anything for them there. I'd think that'd be more likely to work if you paired it with something deterrent. Perhaps borrow a friend's dog and get them to pee around the bounds of the coop and run, just to send the message here there be predators? Or I think Dalia has a video about using ammonia to deter critters. Another option might be to call a local wildlife rehabilitator. They may be able to give you suggestions to find a way to coexist with the squirrels, as they also prefer to avoid relocating animals. Hope you're able to figure it out, that sounds crazy making!

Add red chili pepper flakes and cayenne pepper powder into your feed. Just mix it right into the feed. Then you can also sprinkle chili pepper flakes on the ground where they have tunneled underneath the wire mesh. The other animals won't go near the hot pepper flakes or powder. It doesn't have to be name brand. The cheapest is fine. These are all things I had to do for mine. I even sprinkled the ground around the coop to make them stay away. It works really well. My chickens are happy now.

I do want to know why they go out into the heat, lay down on their side & open a wing. They doing everyday & everyday I think they are dead. It scares me. I've asked them to stop & they refuse.

How in the world are you able to hold your chickens and they dont scream and flap around wanting down. We had these chickens awhile back that allowed my granddaughter to hold and carry around and they seemed fine with it. I just dont understand.

I'm in the UK and it doesn't normally get very hot here but we had a massive heat wave last year and I ended up bringing all 21 chickens indoors. I am planning for it this year so getting some great tips from you. Like the idea of a redneck AC lol.

I use a gravity waterer, but I freeze water in blocks to put in, in the morning. I also take freezy cooler packs and make them a shallow cardboard box to sit on them in.. 🧊
