I've trade all types of grass from Bermuda rye, Kentucky bluegrass and all sorts of cultivars of each. It may seem obvious, but clearly it wasn't to me. Not only does the type of grass and cultivar depend on your region/zone but especially how much/little sun it gets.
Use your cell phone, use a security camera like I did here, have your kids do it, or simply make diligent observations on frequent intervals and record the data.
The only grass that survived was directly under the tree in my front lawn. Mazama is extremely shade tolerant, I highly recommend it especially in those situations!
as for the remainder of my yard, I'm converting it to Iron Cutter Bermuda grass.
