What a brilliant video. Most attempts at answering a question like this will give a definitive answer based off of “I think that...” rather than trying to tackle it in a logical manner, as was done here. You never reached a final answer, no, but as we don’t have one yet, that is the most sensible resolution possible. Keep it up!

Great video. I noticed animals live in the “now” and their causal field or mental energy is much less than a humans therefore they do not keep thinking about the traumatic event over and over like a human does. Once the stress chemicals hit their system they do their thing- fight or flight-then the chemicals dissipate. In a human the chemicals remain and even more is produced when the human thinks about the stressful event over and over again. For the human this leaves a negative marker so fear and trauma remain and grow stronger over time.

As a wildlife rehabilitator, I think that turtles do remember stress and trauma. I work with many turtles that have been run over by cars and mowers. I definitely can observe the negative effects of this trauma.

I say yes. My turtle used to be a sweetie. She would swim over to my hand and just float there. When I picked her up she would stick her head out and I would rub her chin. Then she got sick with RI so I took her to the vet. The antibiotics had to be injected. I had to inject her with a needle in her shoulder for 10 days. Ever since she tries to bite me when I put my hand in her tank or pick her up. Shes not the same anymore.

My Iguanas and Turtles definitely remember both positive and negative events. They can differentiate me from other people by my voice and smell. I had a blind Iguana I rescued that was terrified of thunder storms. I don't know if that had anything to do with his original trauma or how he became blind. One of my female Iguanas learned how to unlatch the indoor cage and I had to put another lock device on it. When she was hungary she would look at me and make chewing gestures and flick her tongue at me. She was so smart it was almost kind of creepy at times. LOL

I enjoyed this video and the in depth topic. I know my dog when I was a kid learned one time that sniffing the electric fence around our cattle field was a negative experience and he also peed on my shoes that night since this was totally my fault. I think animals in general are like people, some of us learn the first time we touch the electric fence and some of us need a repeat experience to remember the good vs the bad. I know my rescue dog has a real issue with men in baseball caps he was abused by one and he remembers that still even after almost 3 years with me.

Hi, tks for Yr videos, I had once a terrapin, which I took to the vet for vitamin D. She got a shot in her back leg, which did hurt her. A week later she needed to have a second one and it got very difficult to draw her back leg, because she remembered the pain. It was impressive.

I'd like to add some anecdotal evidence of my own that kinda contradicts the conclusion you guys came to. I once had a chicken, who was my longest lived chicken at the time, display obvious symptoms of anxiety when no harm was imminent. I think you said that animals calm down and have decreased stress hormones present when there's no imminent danger. This chicken defied that hypothesis. I was only a few years into raising chickens, and I continually improved the structures/fences they were housed in because everything likes to eat chicken, so predators kept finding new ways to get to the chickens. This particular older chicken had experienced several predator attacks on her flock in her lifetime. Eventually, she seemed to fear everything except her chicken buddies, including people. I had hand raised every chick and all of them would eat out of my hand, and a few would ride around on my shoulder while I did yard chores or go to sleep in my lap while I petted them. So she never had a reason to fear people. However, after witnessing predatory attacks on her flock, she began self isolating in the coop, only leaving to dust bathe. Her flock mates still foraged outside everyday, but she didn't. I think she basically had the chicken version of PTSD. She had no health problems, and even into old age still laid a huge, blue egg every other day. I can only ever speculate that trauma was why she isolated herself in the coop and feared everything that moved. But it made clear to me that sometimes animals can worry and have anxiety because of past trauma, that they do remember it. Any thoughts? Thank you for bringing this topic up for discussion! And thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Virginia

Very interesting thing to think about. Great conversation. When my tortoises were small, I wanted them to be alert and fearful of things as they would be naturally. A raccoon or possum could cause them problems I wanted them to react properly. Now that they are larger I touch them much more, so now they are less fearful. and quite friendly. I'm convinced that they can remember to get aggressive, just like if I added a strange tortoise to the area.

I've been caring for a group of mangrove diamondback terrapins at my university for over a year now. They were confiscated by the DNR from a black market situation. Over the past year, they've struggled with health issues as well as being terribly shy at first, and general signs of a high stress level. Only in the past 2-3 months have they overcome the worst of their health issues and become comfortable approaching me during feedings. I think it's likely that the negative experiences they went thru have caused increased stress levels, and thus affected their overall health.

I always say that intelligence is subjective. We may be able to build rockets that take us to the moon, but put those same people in a jungle and chances are they'll die fairly quickly. Not every species needs to know how to problem solve, so they haven't developed that ability, but if they suddenly needed that ability they would adapt, and that's what makes them intelligent in my opinion.

Having to give a box turtle antibiotics through injections for 2 weeks they remember and associate the room and the pattern when taken sweet talked and attempted distraction with the discomfort of recieving treatment for their own good even yearlings don't like the clean room after time they learn getting a mild disinfectant diluting water and betadine and distilled cotton swabs ear cleaning which removes the pain associated with the the clean room and learn to relax. Eventually associate the experience as a not negative stressful response and more curious alert pleasant stimulating relaxed attitude.

I have three tortoises. Some people don’t take care of animals because “they’re just $50” or some excuse to be an ass. One was neglected. Weirdly enough it’s a really social and friendly tortoise, and it’s behavior has more like a dog than a tortoise. The other two tortoises act like any normal tortoise would. So I don’t know if they remember, but he’s probably more happy.

Surely, if they can remember a task after 10 years, then the remembering of a feeling, which in humans last a lifetime, can be remembered just as well. They may just not dwell on it as a human would to the point it affects quality of life.
