With Radiohead on hiatus, members Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke have forged new creative territory with their critically acclaimed side project The Smile. But what does this mean for the future of Radiohead? In this debate, we analyze both sides - is The Smile a nail in the coffin for Radiohead or a new beginning? Diving into the band's evolution from their seminal album OK Computer to their last album A Moon Shaped Pool, we explore whether Radiohead still has more ground to cover. Comparing the band's trajectory to Blur and Gorillaz, we speculate if a Radiohead reunion is likely or if they'll continue down experimental new paths as The Smile. For die-hard Radiohead fans, this is an in-depth conversation about what's next for your favorite band and whether their best days are behind them or still ahead. Tune in for an engaging discussion about the crossroads Radiohead stands at now, and where two music critics believe the legends should go from here.

the smile does not sound like a progression from what radiohead currently is, its more of a side quest, feels more raw and grittier, radiohead is ethereal and sophisticated, i love the smile but it does not scratch the radiohead itch for me

The Smile is an amazing band. Absolutely amazing. I'm glad Thom and Jonny are able to let loose and not have to be burden by the constant pressure of releasing an album that is like a seismic event each time it comes out. Wall of Eyes is a fantastic album that keeps getter better and better each day.

I think part of the reason people long for more Radiohead is because it's so rare that it's even POSSIBLE, nearly 40 years after a band formed, to have all 5 original band members still healthy and into making music. And the status of all the band members as "healthy and making music" might last another 2 decades or another 2 weeks. But while it's possible, fans want them to take advantage.

Have been into Radiohead from the start and imo you can't replace them, seen the smile in Glasgow and it really was a brilliant gig, what would be perfect is if there is a last album from Radiohead or have we already heard it!!?

Even if Radiohead were working on a new album they wouldn’t tell us since they’ve always loved the element of surprise. Just before their last album A Moon Shaped Pool they just dropped two music videos out of nowhere. Burn the Witch and then a week later Daydreaming. And once Daydreaming was released there was an announcement of a new album.

I can't see Thom and Jonny going the Blur route, but I can see Colin, Ed and Phil being okay with it, and for that reason I don't think it likely to happen. I think they're too far beyond the tipping point now. If the new the Smile LP hadn't been such a flash of brilliance, then maybe... You can see Thom's body reacting to this new stuff, it's what's moving him inside and out and he's probably strongly predisposed to going with the feel and doesn't need to worry about looking backwards at the legacy band of his youth. I think Read The Room on the new album is his slightly cryptic dig at everyone wanting the band to get back together.

I don't think we NEED more Radiohead, but I do think it would be really cool if 10 years after A Moon Shaped Pool, so 2026, Radiohead reunited to start recording one final album together, going into it knowing this is their last project, and maybe release in 2027 or 2028? I just think it could be a cool approach if they recorded it with the total idea of closure and bringing the arc of the band to a complete and climactic ending + a grand tour to celebrate.

The distinction between the two bands is kind of blurry to be honest. I guess I would say: think more about this in terms of musicians, not bands. The Smile is not Radiohead, but with Thom and Johnny involved there are naturally going to be similarities. I definitely don't get the impression that The Smile was intended to be a complete break from what came before. I really think it's less about one thing ending and another starting, and more about two musicians continuing to explore the music they feel like making, in whichever vehicle happens to feel right at the time.

Is this the most difficult question to answer in music history??…I’ve been a fan of Thom/RH since 1995….i can only say that The smile is a continuation of RH musically….do they want to play together again after all of them doing solo projects? Can they? If they don’t, we have The Smile making music just as good…of course a RH album would be incredible to see after all this time and there new ideas…we will wait and see…..much love to Thom and Radiohead 🎼

Agree. We can understand how the smile would continue as the successor to Radiohead but how should never diminish what Radiohead achieved as an entity. I personally would love to see the smile live and hear their songs and Radiohead separately. Interesting to see what lies ahead

I really hope Radiohead makes another album. All the interviews I see from them seem to indicate that they all still care about each other, and I feel like they could make something really great again since all of their creative juices are clearly showing in their current side projects. But if it is the end, I think A Moon Shaped Pool, and especially True Love Waits is a perfect send off

As much as I love radiohead, TKOL was a let down and AMSP was by the numbers almost dad rock. They could've written that album in their sleep at that point in their career. The side projects have all been more ambitious. It's like they do what is expected under the radiohead banner and experiment with the side work. And I prefer the latter. If radiohead do another album then great but I'm more than happy if they keep releasing side project works going forward. It's more interesting that what they would release under the radiohead name.

@@randomchannel-px6ho don't get me wrong AMSP is great. I love Decks Dark, Ful Stop, Identikit etc but I think it's just, for the first time I thought they were not trying to do anything different. So it felt very by the numbers. And what they did to True Love Waits was bad imo. I never put AMSP on and listen to it start to finish.

AMSP? DAD ROCK???? did we even listen to the same goddamn album? what is it about the melancholy atmosphere, electronic soundscapes, and string and piano arrangements that makes you think dad rock. dad rock is like ACDC or led zeppelin dude. calling their most artful, introspective, somber album "almost dad rock" is insane

Aroms For Peace was such a better project than King of Limbs. Especially when coming off of In Rainbows previously. I cant say the same thing with Smile & Moon Shaped Pool. I saw Radiohead on that tour and them doing haunting chamber music live was stellar as hell. Smile is great but its hard to count Radiohead out when Moon Shaped Pool exists as their "newest" material.

Radiohead has stated before that they only tour after a new album is made. Maybe they’ll change that but we’ll see. In terms of music I see 3 options that could be likely. A: They finishing touring for the new smile album and then the next output is a radiohead project. B: The smile complete a trilogy of albums before radiohead regroups. C: A Moon Shaped Pool was the last radiohead album. I get the sense Thom and Johnny are loving the smile’s situation and possibly just want to continue doing what they enjoy with that.

None of them need "the coin," that's ridiculous. There are no stories about them throwing their money around, and people are still buying their records today. However, i think "I Quit" on the new album is Thom's message to the band as it talks about new paths and his head being 'lit.' He feels inspired again and it's because he left what he felt was the constricting nature of the Radiohead legacy.

No the real question for me is What IS Radiohead ?? I think Radiohead is Pablo - Ok Computer Everything else is Thom Yorke. Why do I say this? Coz The Eraser and Smile sounds similar. It’s Yorke So YES I would like to see Radiohead come back. Plug a guitar in and make another great album. The best tracks on the new Smile album just sound like Pyramid Song and Spinning Plates to me

The Smile was a pandemic project and nothing to do with Radiohead 'drifting apart' they were apart for the same reasons as everyone else at that time, some of the songs were around long before The Smile and had been played as Radiohead, I fully expect another Radiohead album and tour, discussions have already started according to Phil, I regard The Smile the same way as Thoms solo, Atoms for Peace or Jonnys soundtrack material, its really good but its not Radiohead and as much as I adore The Smile, A Moon shaped Pool is still a better album than both Smile albums IMO
