Hi all. I've recently switched to a product called Aubiose, which is made from hemp. Primarily it is used as bedding for horses, however having read up about it, I liked the fact that it has antibacterial and antifungal properties as well as repelling insects such as flies etc. I use a good 4 inch base and it has good wicking qualities and clumps together at the bottom making spot cleaning super easy. I wonder if anyone else here has heard of or used it.

It’s the dust from the badly dust extracted pine shavings that can cause URIs. This is because the dust will be breathed in and it would settle on the lungs which is where the bacteria would then start to grow, thus causing a URI. Correct me if I’m wrong!
@marieparsons9908
@marieparsons9908 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. The bacteria that cause uri's just require a moist environment to grow. Presence or absence of foreign bodies, eg. dust has nothing to do with it. Consider please that they can get uri's no matter what kind of bedding is present. Also, piggies will sneeze out things like dust. That's the purpose of sneezing- to clear the lungs.

I agree with you, but alot of people don't. That's ok everyone is entitled to their opinions. But if the bedding was the problem, I worry alot of people wouldn't think about their pets living environment. Personally I think all factors should be looked at when an animal has developed a sickness. This can cause people to overlook their pets kind of bedding. Some shavings are dusty and I actually got an issue in my throat after I used them before. The ones Saskia uses are not wood shavings but wood chips and are better quality. I personally don't think its a good idea to rule out all kinds of bedding, because some people may take this advice even if their guinea pig did get a URI from the dusty bedding. Vets don't know everything and sometimes do make mistakes on animal care. www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/chemicals/wood_dust.html Just read this article.
@marieparsons9908

@@Angel-lu3lm That's why I like Saskia's science-based advice. Opinions don't help any of us without science to back them up. The more we know, the better we are at diagnosing. And, I agree with you that all factors have to be considered. And I agree that vets sometimes make assumptions. But in fairness, not much is known about piggies. Vets learn systems. Eg. once they understand how a stomach works, it's easy to treat a dog stomach, a cat stomach, a walrus stomach. Without adequate research to demonstrate that piggies are different, vets will keep assuming that the stomach of a piggy is just like that of any other species.

Love your videos Saskia. I also use same pine shavings, it's great. My only problem is how do you dispose of it? I was thinking if any flower producer would take it here in Norfolk 🇬🇧 to use it as compost for their flowers. I have a little garden and I have my compost bin which is not very big. I clean it twice a week - once spot clean and once full cage clean. This produces a lot of rubbish. Love Ghost. 🤍 Thanks. 🙏🏽❤

Ya when i was a kid cedar was the go too.. mine lived 6 years as a kid in cedar. Im 36 now.. and i was going to use pine bedding as i have horses on my 14 acres. And the pine bedding dust free is 8$ for a 300cu bag.. im talking massive bag here... The alfalfa and Timmothy hay 50lbs bails are only 20$ as well. Yet in pet stores a 50cu bag ofr paper is 25$... and a small bag of tomothy is 12$... i just dont get why people spend so much money on this stuff. Id be spending hundreds on hay and paper bedding a month... Ok pine has phenols supposedly that can kill my pigs ??.. but every youtuber i see is using pine lol.. Or some fleece blankets.. and i aint using blankets... that get pee and poo on them and have to wash that in my machine daily. So im gonna stick with these pine shavings i get my horses and use it for my guinea pigs as well. its soft.. very fine. Dust free and for 8$ ill have enough begging for two piggies for months. My house is made of pine.. im not dead yet

I've used kiln-dried pine shavings (ecoflake) for the past year or so and one of my guinea pigs just died of lung disease. I took him to the vet because he was losing weight, and an x-ray showed he had a mass in his lungs and lung congestion - he died that night. He was only 5. :( I'm trying to figure out if using pine caused this to happen, I'm so heartbroken

The paper stuff though is expensive as hell. 25$ for 50cu ? With two guinea pigs and daily changing specific spots in the bedding to keep it cleab from poo and pee.. It costs 100$ a month.. Pine shaving dust free for horses in tractor supply they are like 300cu bags.. massive bags for 8$.. DO the math

A little bit of carrot daily is just fine. Try activated charcoal. One capsule is enough for 6 doses. Empty the powder from the capsule in shot glass. Take 6 x 1 ml syringes. Then put 6 ml of water in the shot glass with the powder. Mix it and fill each syringe with the mixture. You know have enough for a three day treatment. Do this for 6 days. 2x daily

Well my guinea pig got an URI the night after I tried wood shavings. She woke up with symptoms of URI. Then I had to take her to the vet she is now on antibiotics. The vet said it might be a coincidence, but now I am afraid to use the wood chips again. The strange thing is they used wood shavings a few times a couple of weeks ago and were fine. But before I allowed them to settle for an hour or so. This time I didn't wait long because I rushing to clean their area and maybe it was dusty. I personally believe some wood shavings can cause URI. My guinea pig was good until she went on wood shavings. The next day she was coughing, had noisy breathing, was very tired and kept sitting one spot and wouldn't eat. If its something else caused it, it would be a strange coincidence. Especially since it was only over night.

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Thanks for you reply😊. Your wood chips look different than mine. The ones I use are shavings, I actually got a bit allergic to them myself one time. So you don't think different kinds of ones can causd URI?. I had heard of other people who had the same issues from certain kinds of wood chips. On the reviews for the kind I use, another person said their bunnies got a respiratory issue from them. But I kind of didn't worry too much. I am not sure, if she got a URI from some thing else it makes no sense as she lives inside in my lounge room. Is this common in guinea pigs and can they get it for no reason? What could of caused the bacteria? She doesn't have signs of an ear infection I don't think, but maybe I have to keep an eye on here symptoms. If It comes back I know its caused from something else. Something else I must include is that 2 of my guinea pigs have soft poo. I am not sure why.
