I'm barely 29 and I grew up with most people saying "tre"/"tre flip" but I still like "360 flip". Sounds more legit. But tre flip does sound smooth rolling off the tongue. Haha. Skateboarding lingo is insane, it's like a language of its own. I love these conversations. Much love to the OG J Lee.

1996 till 2005 it was called a 360 flip. A decade later it was suddenly a treflip. Jason's thoughts are very relatable for me.

Here in brazil, we call that trick a "kickflip". Yes, and the actual kickflip we call it just "flip". So basically 360 flip/tre flip it's called "kickflip", and the actual kickflip it's called "flip".

Since i'm from Sweden, I always thought it was a thing here only at first because in swedish tre = three, so we just made it tre flip here as short, but then eventually realized it's used all over the world :D

its frontside boardslide because before you pop the trick, the rail or coping is in front of you so its FRONT side, doesnt matter if you slide backwards or not, same goes for frontside salad, frontside feeble grind and frontside lipslide

As brazilian, what kelly is saying is true, it's very common people call 360flip as "Kickflip" and the original kickflip just "flip", boardslide is called rockslide and lipslides are the boardslides, some people call varial heelflips as "shove it heel"... this is some examples i can remember

It was mid to late 2000s, for sure. Because it wasn’t a thing in 2003-2004 at least on the east coast or in videos, that’s when I didn’t skate for a while and came back to “tre flip” everywhere.

There was a rumour about a freestyler in town here in fall 88 doing a kickflip where the board spun 360 and the name we used was "ollie global spin". Later on that winter, TWS did their flatground article and bot Jason Lee and Steve Ortega (the H Street hombre who was the 'other' big board 360 kickflip pioneer) had photos of them 360-kickflippig, but one of them was called a 360 degree ollie kickflip or something. So many names.

I'm 46, we called it 360 flip in the 90's. When talking to young skateboarders I refer to it as tre flip or they don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

I remember in 90' or 91' it was a 360 kick flip, as we all know its a 360 pop shuvit with a kick flip twist the 360 spin. That being said I think it depends if you have them or not.

makes sense to have 360 kickflip reserved for when you do a 360 ollie and kickflip combined. although i guess you could say 360 treflip but that's kinda redundant isn't it? speaking of old trick names, as a young skater in upstate ny in the late 80's, a no comply was always done rotating your board frontside 180. if you rotated backside 180, we called it an oprah winfrey. still feel like no comply variations need diff names, there are so many different variations and when you add in shuvs or kickflips describing them quickly becomes too verbose

Minimum syllables always win. In the automotive world only one company produced something called a posi track rear end. All the companies produced similar designs but they all had longer names so posi track became ubiquitous with this style of design regardless of who was making it because it was the shortest name. It's the same thing here.

360 flip is already a shortened form of 360 kick flip. Tre flip derives from the idea of three.

I used to talk about Shuvs too as a pop shuv it has to be popped but a shuv it can literally just be scooped and not even pop the tail. so calling it a shuv is confusing when they pop as it's not the same trick.

In the game it was called a "360 flip". Somewhere along the way the newer, more "hip" generations of skaters (who maybe weren't as heavily influenced to start skating from the THPS games) thought the term "treflip" not only sounded much cooler than "360 flip", but also rolled off the tongue much easier. Edit: I still call it a "360 flip" and refuse to change like the stubborn stereotypical boomer skater that I am.

its called a 360 kickflip, it got shortend down to a 360 flip, then got shortend down to a 3 flip. when skateboarding got alot more popular around the world, spanish speakers or portugese speakers would refer to them as treflip, which literally means 3 flip. theres a few other languages where tre or tres means 3. frontside and backside grinds or slides is the side of your body thats approaching the rail or ledge, if the front of your body is facing your rail or ledge its front side. frontside or backside spin is confusing for some people, just remember its the way your lead shoulder turns, if you skate regular, and you spin right thats front side because your lead shoulder turns towards your front. im 35 and to be honest, it doesnt matter to me as long as we all understand each other lol it just doesnt look good for the sport in professional comps when everyones calling tricks different names, the trick names need regulating so our sport sounds like a sport and not just a hobby. i love skating wheather it was 30 years ago or 3 minutes ago.
