In this video I once again discuss the fear of leaning your motorcycle at slow speeds and a work around for that.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Wow, I've been riding since 1974 and I just learned plenty from watching this instructional video. I retired from the Army in September 2017 and was diagnosed with stage four cancer just one month after retiring. My deployments up until my retirement and my treatments for cancer following retirement has basically kept me off of a bike for several long years. I am now however cancer-free after 4 years of brutal treatment and I'm back on my Harley and I'm starting to enjoy my retirement, finally. I'm not going to call this a refresher course I'm going to call this excellent information and knowledge for any Rider no matter what experience they have. Thanks for what you do, I've truly learned more today as one should always do to keep their head on a swivel, literally.

I just spent 42K, with extras, on a new Indian bike that is over 1000lbs. Not ridden in 20 years and even back then never had a bike this heavy. I was terrified to ride it. Almost dumped it in the dealer parking lot so refused to drive it home. I just lacked the confidence. My motor cop buddies from the patrol told me to just go out in a parking lot and practice the basics and take a class. That's my plan but still afraid. Bike is being delivered sometime this week. After seeing this video I am FAR less afraid to get on it and practice. Still worried about damaging the bike if it falls so I may purchase some police bars that go around the bags but will see. Well done. This is so helpful. I can not thank you enough. If you collect patches I would be happy to send one. ;-)

I'm 55 and have been riding for 30 yrs. I'm an Ok rider who is looking to improve his slow maneuvering skills on a Road Glide. His explanations are detailed and describe the order of events perfectly, with just enough emphasis on the key points. Great Job!

"The leaning of the motorcycle and the fear" You nailed it with this video. I finally can confidently perform a U-turn because of you and this video. I spent time on and off practicing Paladino's videos and could never get it. I even reached out to him and he suggested I be in 2nd gear when performing his routine. But I was confused, no one starts in 2nd gear from a complete stop especially at a traffic light when attempting a U-turn. Also I could never get the whole "feather the clutch". I dropped my bike many times because I was riding to fast with his method. I love how you called out "its not necessary to make a U-turn within 18 ft. and not necessary to lean". I actually searched You tube "how to execute a U-turn without leaning" and this video came up. I first practiced the slow crawl , exercise #2; then continued with slightly turning the wheel, then I jumped into slowly performing the U-turn (while dragging the brake). Got it within 5 minutes! As you stated, just focus on the rear brake. Stayed within friction zone and preload/keep throttle loaded while dragging the brake. I got sharper turns the more I applied more rear brake. So freakin' easier with your method, so awesome. Wish I found this video while back. I actually only watched your videos about your Motorcycle Jack. Those were the only ones I watched (start to finish). I'm firm a believer now with the preload/friction zone/and dragging the brake. That worked perfect for me. Was like a dream, not having the fear of the bike falling over. Thank you so much

Finally someone talking REAL LIFE stuff ... There's so much youtubers / bike vlogers that are constantly telling people the have to lean, make tight turns and all that stuff. They even kinda blame people for having fear and some even encurage people to things they are not comfortable with and eventually force them into crashing. I'm not saying that you never ever should consider learning to make tight turns or that it doesn't help you not BUT you should not take a risk that's not necessary, especially as a beginner or someone who's riding for quite some time but without ever trying to do such things You need to start slow and work on your skills until you feel confident, if you go step by step your confidence will build up and you'll eventually reach the next level automatically. When I made my bike licence about 23 years ago, nobody was even talking about making tight turns or stuff like that. You need to turn around? Fine, stop somwhere you have enough room and do it however you feel comfortable. You usually won't have to u-turn in the middle of traffic so there's no need to do it fast or tight. What you need to learn is how to lturn left/right from a stand still if you want to turn at any intersection, that's a requiered skill for sure but even there is NO NEED to do it super tight or super fast. Just stay in your skill zone and you will be safe!

This is golden advice ! So glad I found you. I am a re-entry rider and boy do I feel like a newbie. I haven't ridden a bike let alone a bicycle in over 20 years, so the first three days were admittedly embarrassingly terrifying. I was wobbly and shaking, but when I followed an old school Harley rider and followed his movements it started coming back to me. I went out today and there was a ton of road construction going on, so I got good stop and go, slow and go riding in. Turning slowly is my biggest obstacle today. Oh, and I hardly use my rear brake, so I need to, I see.

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Tight u-turns have always scared me because my bike weighs almost 600 lbs wet and is top center heavy (Sports bike) and there is no way that I know that I could pick this up if I dropped it. And since I have dropped it once and it took 3 people to get it back, I am not in a hurry for a repeat. That said, I want to learn more and I have been riding on and off since I was 9. But I was fearless then, I am 60 now and know better.

I really appreciated your comments about duck walking. Unlike the other retired police officer videos who makes you feel like your an idiot if you duck walk, your view is realistic and spot on. I try to avoid as much as possible but from time to time I find myself in a situation when I just feel I have to. UT the approach here can reduce those times even further. I have always felt 27 feet u turns was enough. Those other videos seem to stress 18 and if you can't do 18 then you shouldn't be riding. The feeling I get from them. Not yours though. You truly are a blessing to the motorcycle world. I am happy to join!!!

ROBERT! I went back to watch this today 12/19/21. LOVE IT. I went out and practiced u-turns for an hour (of course in the process i go through Exercises 1 and 2). After 30 minutes I thought I should get a tape measure and understand the lengths I was working on. I can definitely do the 27 foot day in and day out (keep it loaded, cover the brake, keep throttle where it is, head and eyes, handlebars) BUT TODAY I REALIZED I HAD BEEN PRACTICING IN A STREET ITSELF CURB TO CURB WAS 27 FEET. GREAT. So I laid out a tape measure at 16 feet and then went around left and left then a u turn then rights and rights and each time kept my wheel just outside that 16 ft tape. OUTSTANDING. I felt for the first time I really understand the POTENTIAL of being the boss of my motorcycle. WOW the confidence. I wasn't leaning the bike. I WAS NOT LEANING THE BIKE. No need to do that. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Thanks again.

Robert, In my quest to be skilled and confident with u-turns and low speed maneuvers, I came across this video. I'm committed to mastering the small u-turns, but now understand that leaning is not absolutely necessary to make reliable u-turns in real-world situations. Your comment around 22:14 "speed makes me _have_ to lean" was an eye-opener. And your example about making a u-turn toward an object such as a curb, car, or wall using a controlled, slower speed u-turn rather than a potentially riskier, leaning u-turn requiring speed is really an important point to consider. Awesome content backed up with great visuals. Thanks!!!

Now I feel vulnerable and afraid to lean it far at low speeds again. I gotta get back to the empty lot to practice and regain my skills. I already took my bags off and put on some crash bar protectors

I began riding mini bikes when I was a child and rode regularly on cruisers until I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. The treatment left me unable to ride because I was so sick, so I just got back on a bike for the first time in 4 years only this time, I’m riding a street bike - something I’ve never done. I can’t thank you enough for this video because I’ve been having a tough time with those slow turns and watching you make that maneuver was literally an “ah-ha” moment. Thank you for taking the time to teach important skills from which we can all benefit.

Ok I am a newbie purchased my first Harley Davidson 2021 Sportster 48 1200 cc and was like omg this bike is big. Then I took the CA CHP Riding Safety Course, which really helped. 4 months later, I purchased a 2022 Harley Davidson 2022 Softail Heritage Classic. HD delivered to my home, once the drove off and as I was attempting to turn it around; yes it fell over. I wished I had seen your video on how to lift a motorcycle up. Tha bike sat tipped over in my driveway for 15 minutes- not good at all. However, my male neighbors came to the rescue. This is my first time watching your videos and they are fantastic. Whenever you are on the West Coast (Los Angeles Area) be sure to send a shout out so I can get the word out you are coming to help us become better riders. Until next time; Be safe my friend!

Gave up my "outlaw biker ways" for the most part and have decided to be an educated motorcycle rider. I have full gear now (need a vented jacket still), BT, Camera, Modular lid and so on. I decided to play the noob and start fresh in understanding how to ride a motorcycle and I gotta say I have been humbled. The one thing that I've learned the hard way was when you are in a slow turn DO NOT TOUCH THE FRONT BRAKE! Guess it may be obvious but well worth knowing early on. Taking the riding course, the person teaching constantly repeated this. Do not touch the front brake. My 2 cents. And thanks for the great video. Motivated to practice this skill.

Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 Yes I mention this quite often. In fact, there’s a 10 push-up penalty for grabbing the front brake during slow speed maneuvers.

Another Helpfull advise. I just wish you can make a video with a passenger on and do those slow speed turns. Thats one of my weakness right now or im not confident when I have my wife as my bike ride. Whenever were going to make a tight u turn I always ask her to go down first. My bike Is GS rally and im only 5”9 in height so im tip toed. I think a lot of riders will appreciate if you make slow speed exercises with a passenger on. More power to you sir and thank you so much. P.S. I anit doing push ups no more coz practice makes perfect. Its been 1 month for me and I practice 3 Times a week. Im lock and loaded of confidence! Cheers

Hey Ed. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 I actually made a video regarding riding 2-up while slow riding a few months ago. My advice is if you really don’t feel confident riding 2-up with your wife, don’t do it. Check out this video... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLJja7dh1K2viaM.html

Early this year I bought a 2014 Road King after a long time with no bike - this makes #4. I handle it well, having years of experience from the dirt to the street. Still, I'm taking in all of this prior to just hopping on and riding off into the sunset. I'm 69 and getting back into it like before. This is precisely the information I need. Thank You for this.

My name is Les Larios, and am a disabled vet. I have been on bikes the majority of my life, however mostly dirt bikes. I have been riding on the highways and back roads now for 20 plus years. I have always admired the smoothness of control motor officers exhibit. I have been working on u-turns for a bit, not that I need them much, but to have another skill set. One never knows what might occur. You are obviously well trained and present this material in a highly professional manner, so thank you for that. Confidence building was a big part of being a military leader, so I understand you well. Thank YOU for your service with the NYPD and motor unit...I know the sacrifices that servants of the people must make. God Bless.

No fear leaning my bike, I actually love leaning my bike, an 850 lb cruiser. Call me crazy, I even like the sound of scraping footboards, it lets me know I'm leaning that bike hard. Yeah, I'm crazy. LOL!

You’re not crazy. I love that stuff as well, as do many riders. It gives us a sense of accomplishment because it’s a result of hours of training and being able to overcome instincts and for some of us, bad habits. But as I mentioned in this video, it’s not for all riders. 👍🏾

Rob Great video. Everyone else is always saying a lean is a must, good to hear there are other ways to accomplish the same thing. Of course having the confidence to lean and make a u-turn within two parking spaces is a good thing also. Thank you again. Definitely gonna be become a VIPreloader. Ride Safe

I recently bought a 1985 Honda gold wing that weighs 725 lbs. This is a beast of a bike with saddlebags and fairing. On my first ride I took it around the circular road in my mobile home park. I had to go at a speed that was too fast for first gear and too slow for second. There was a lot of slack that would be taken up suddenly, then I would be going too fast, in second gear. When I saw the word "preload" I thought I would check this out. The clutch on most motorcycles are "wet" clutches. So when you apply the rear brake(carefully) and drive forward you take up the slack in the drive train. Now you can go slow without the awful push-pull of the heavy bike. It's pre loaded.
