--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dyslexia is very common, affecting 20 percent of the population.
Dyslexia represents 80- 90 percent of all those with learning disabilities.
Reading is complex.
It requires our brains to connect letters to sounds, put those sounds in the right order, and pull the words together into sentences and paragraphs we can read and understand.
People with dyslexia have trouble matching the letters they see on the page with the sounds those letters and combinations of letters make.
Children and adults with dyslexia struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly and learn a second language, among other challenges.
But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence.
While people with dyslexia are slow readers, they often very fast and creative thinkers!
Do you think you have dyslexia?
1. Do you confuse visually similar words such as cat and cot?
2. Do you lose your place or miss out lines when reading?
3. Do you have trouble telling left from right?
4. Do you get confused when given several instructions at once?
5. Do you find it difficult to find the right word to say?
6. Do you find it difficult to read out loud?
Dyslexia can’t be “cured” - it is a lifelong condition
HOWEVER with the right support dyslexic individuals can become highly successful students and adults.

As a dyslexic let me reassure all those who (like me) answered yes to every question, and even questioned myself on 2 of them (1 and 6). Having dyslexia doesn't make your life terrible. It may be hard to learn memory intensive studies. But being dyslexic ironically makes you more likely to adapt to our society on your own terms. You are a far more out-of- the-box thinker then any avrige individual, to the point where your opinions are rival only to that of those who are classified as "geniuses". Understand that your unwillingness to understand basic schooling or societies normal pathological studies, isn't becuase you are slow, or disabled. It is becuase your mind is able to comprehend our society in a way that it is incapable of understanding itself. It takes you longer to learn becuase your mind wants to think there are better ways of understanding that which is presented to it. There should be no denying that there is, but you simply need to come to the understanding that you (like many great minds) are a minority. To survive in this world you must come to the understanding of the ideas that those who are trained to believe teach you. You yourself do not need to believe them, but you must accept the challenge of regurgitating them as the majority do. Becuase if you are not able to live in there world, they will prosecute you, they will torment you, they will give you no choice, and if you still refuse they will end your life. Threw imprisonment, threw execution, and in the nicest, most polite way they can act upon it. Becuase it is what THEY believe is the right thing. Becuase it is what THEY think is correct. You do not make the rules in this world. You live by there rules. They do not know your pain, will never know your pain, and no matter how much you try to explain it they are not programmed to understand. You are not stupid, you are not slow, you are not disabled. You were born to understand the truth. So don't let anything make you give up on living your life. You are a stranger in a strange land. Do as the locals do. Live another day. It will be hard, but it's bearable. There are many who cannot live the kind of life you live, they go insane. Do not be like them. Being the mental minority should allow you to see that we can live the same life. We can be happy among the crowd. If we have to be among the sheep, let us at least be the sheep who enjoy our lives. Not the ones who fear it. Study hard, it will pay off. Learn things your own way, make the knowledge yours. Becuase there is truth to it. Regardless of what will be parroted.

It was picked up when I was at primary school. Back then there wasn't the help that there is today. How it affects me is im bad at maths. My spelling is poor. I used to get told use a dictionary but I say I can't cause you need to know how to spell to use one. I here there's a dictionary for dyslexia. I sometimes write a p when it should be a d. I can't read books I just can't take in what I read. Learning is very hard I need to be shown a job loads of times before I get how to do it. Then I will master it like I've done it for years. I'm not good with paperwork but excellent at praticical things. When I write I can write a head of what I need to put. Talking about numbers I can say 6400 but I should have said 4600. From next week I'm moving from my floor job to the office so there will be typing and accounts to do. I'm half worried about it. That test you just did I could relate to all of it. Not so much about Q1. A struggled through school and college but I did it. Yes it was hard and I had a lot of hard work to study. But I got there.

Reason I hate my dyslexia: In theater we have to read out loud the script and most of the times the way we read it effects what role we will get. Well my slow reading time isn't painting me in the best light, no is it? xD I mess up words all the time and it's really frustrating. Like I know what the page says, I can read it just fine in my head, but once you make me read it out loud... nah. Sigh to the max level

(I’ve been formally diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADHD for context) I used to think I was good at reading in my head (I mean I was blowing through chapter books (350+ pages) in a day or so), but slow and mistake ridden when reading outloud. Until I realised while reading a chapter that had no dialogue and was incredibly “boring” in my opinion that I’m not quick at reading in my head. I skim read… yeah… let’s just say I missed a lot of plot threads… add in my short attention span (special thanks to my ADHD) and umm… fun times… *im typing this while constantly looking back and forth and my insane collection of books as I realise I’ve probably missed so much but am just genuinely not bothered to read about over 100+ books (warrior cats by Erin Hunter if curious)…*

I've come to the conclusion that for years I've had dyslexia and ADHD. It's been a constant thought in my head along with other mental possibilities that could back up this theory Especially after entering yr10 (it got really bad). The only problem is that I've never been diagnosed for it, and if I ask someone they're just gonna think I'm over reacting or won't consider it. Apparently when I was younger I was in some form of a 'help class' and honestly don't know why I wasn't tested for anything from then to now?? *Edit a year, late 2022:* I think the dyslexia theory has decreased a little but the ADHD is still a big factor (+depression and other issues) and now I keep thinking about minor autism or low empathy. I still want to get tested but at this point, and probably the future, it’ll never end up happening. Feels like it’s been too late for a long time.

It's never to late to get a diagnosis. At least if you get tested, you are more able to deal with life. You often come to terms with all the negativity and you learn to accept its not your fault etc. I'm 65 yrs old. 6 yrs ago I finally got tested for ADHD ! It was brilliant for me ! I failed at almost everything at school, I was in classes for kids that were slow learners. I wasn't supported by my family etc. I struggled such alot. Its done my confidence so much good. I now know I'm slow, but I'm certainly not stupid. Please find a way to get tested, there are ADHD support groups a round the Country and that's where I began my journey. I hope this will help you in some way, belive in yourself, be strong and do something about it !

Go talk to a professional! Self-diagnosing will only make you more confused, I can say that from experience. Talking to someone who has studied this kind of thing can really help, and as a couple others have said in the replies it's never too late to be diagnosed. Also, nobody who knows what they're talking about will assume you're overreacting. People who do that don't care whether those things are happening or not, they are the kind of people to disregard mental disorders even when they are diagnosed. (I know this from experience as well, not fun). You should just ignore them, unless they are a big problem.

It’s never too late to get diagnosed! I got diagnosed with adhd last year at 16 and holy fuck did it make a difference getting on medication but just understanding myself way better on its own. There’s so many things I struggle with that I am now able to help bc I got diagnosed and was given tools that can help! Best decision I’ve ever made. I felt the same way thinking people would think I was overreacting. People did treat it that way initially but I kept persisting and giving them valid reasons and eventually my mom who was one of the doubters got me diagnosed bc of the recommendation of a counselor and now she’s so happy seeing me thrive. It’s never too late. Best choice I ever made 🫶 I hope you do the same!

I used to be a high-scoring students when I was younger. Life happened which worsen my mental health. I got Covid and other physical illnesses that also may or may not contribute to my worsening memory and comprehension issues. Now as an adult, I often get scolded for making mistakes that involves memory (such as forgetting or misheard instructions). People thinks I'm not 'focused enough', 'not serious enough to do my job', or 'I use my phone too often' (which I'm not, compared to my coworkers). To be honest it's frustrating when you've tried your best, but you still expect to forget about something to the point that people starts to doubt your ability to do even the simplest tasks

I'm diagnosed with Dyslexia, Autism and ADHD and later in adulthood Schizophrenia and OCD. 😔 Life is tough... But I am happy and blessed.😊 Nothing stops me and I have become a software engineer and currently an AI engineer. It's alright. You can do it .Even I think I am extremely dumb almost always, but my doctor tells me that I can not compare myself with a neurotypical person.. it's like running freely and running with lots of burden on yourself.. Don't compare yourself with others, you got this.. ❤

Hi, I was so lucky to be diagnosed with Dyslexia when I was around 12 years old, and I was taught by the Dyslexia Institute in Sheffield, England, as a teenager. My Dyslexia was upsetting, but I worked at it, and I still struggle slightly even now. I've got an excellent academic degree, and, as a career, I'm part of the team running a prestigious university, working with some of the smartest people in Britain. Now, I consider my Dyslexia to be an advantage. I think about things slightly differently, which can be helpful as part of a bigger group. I use technology to help me, such as software that turns text into speech, and I also use Grammarly, which is software which finds mistakes in writing. Grammarly is superb! Please don't be concerned if you are diagnosed with Dyslexia; it might turn into your superpower!

I’ve never been diagnosed with dyslexia, but I’m a cashier. Sometimes when reading people their change, it could say $7.24. I see the number, get the correct change, and say “Your change is $4 and 27 cents. I mean...$7 and..” and by that time I’m so embarrassed I just stop talking. I’ve also noticed that sometimes when texting I type words backwards. I have excellent grammar, and rarely stumble over spelling or sentence structure. I just see one thing and in my brain it jumbles itself. I’m here trying to find clarity.

Well, long story short, I have a form of mild dyslexia. I answered 5 of 6 yes. As a child I was considered a gifted kid and was in the GATE program for a few years. I always struggled with spelling and would constantly swap letters, words, or phrases when reading, whether in my head or out loud. Always thought I had dyslexia but my mother just said I was a hypochondriac. It wasn't until my second year in college that I actually was diagnosed/helped with it by the counseler and given the accommodations. It helped me so much, even just having some extra time to take an exam helps me to relax and focus more on the actual exam and I'm able to take the time I needed to read and process the questions before answering. I would make silly mistakes like reading the questions without the "landmines" of NOT or ALWAYS. I didn't realize it until now that being confused when given a lot of information or instructions at once was a dyslexia thing. In my labs in college, my professor would say the instructions once and then expect us to just go and get things done. My classmates would immediately start working and I'd just stand there in a daze trying to process what was happening, though I suppose having others all rushing around you doesn't help with me trying to process what just happened.

As someone professionally diagnosed with multiple learning disabilities it's wrong to claim that you have it off a KZfaq video I went through months of testing and countless struggles throughout you should make videos help support the community instead of a video like this you should have been a video explaining what it is not making up a test that's not accurate now I don't mean to offend you but people claiming they have it and they don't, really undermines people that do

It's so crazy, I have had learning difficulties all my life, but the learning psychologist I saw as a child said it had something to do with being left-eye dominant and I have since met so many people that are left-eye dominant and have none of the same difficulties. Now the more I learn about dyslexia the more I realize I've been dyslexic this whole time. But because I told him I didn't mix up b and d, I was never diagnosed. I could have gotten the help I needed and done so much better.

Don't kick yourself. My opinion, all they (non-dyslexics) could do at the best (and that isn't very good) is diagnosed the "problem." You would have been branded and classified as "needling" help and be placed into a resource or special day class and given very poor educational instruction (if you are lucky direct instruction by knowledgeable and caring teacher) and never have the opportunity to finish you requirements to graduate from high school and given the opportunity to attend a local college. No, my advice: you were better off not being "discovered."

I never let it stop me, my mom helped me read even when I hated it. I was taken out of class to go to reading help classes and at one point was basically called hopeless. I learned to cope on my own and I had English teachers who seemed to hate me. I am now passing my AP and honors classes and am able to write essays quickly. Right imma get it straight there a two types of dyslexia one reading, people with this type of dyslexia find it very hard to not skip the line of reading and they find it that they were still in phonics even in upper key stage 2 they also have reading blinds two spelling people with this dyslexia tend to find it hard to spell and sometimes we will throw in random word bc we don't know how it's supposed to look like we also just forget simple spelling like who, what, you ,mean ,ect and it take much much longer then the average person to get a spelling in there head anyway people with dyslexia (like me) have a incredible imagination but yes we do struggle with inside work in the class room we find outside work really fun and easy.

As a person with dyslexia i want to say: Dyslexia is commonly misdiagnosed as Adhd or Add. I normally say "adhd is just a side affect of dyslexia" but that does not mean adhd doesnt exist on its own- im just saying they often times work together. Adhd and dyslexia adhd are slightly different so if you ever find that people say "you have adhd symptoms but dont have adhd" (which is rare cause they are *veryyy* similar) just know you probably have dyslexia. Oh a more important thing is dyslexia isnt JUST a reading disability- it can make you forget things easily and you can get lost easily- you understand questions completely differently than others like here let me google a quiz and read off the first question and ill literally give you all the responses I think off first- and yes a lot of the time they all come in at once so it can get loud in our heads. Question "Is a persons worth determined by their contribution to society as a whole?" before I answered this I had to re-read it 3 times to kind of understand it. My thoughts were "Hmm yeah but no, mainly no...but yeah cause what you do can hurt other people... so you should care but this test is about disabilities so the answer is no- and I agree- but some dont"...etc my brain just began to roam, this is a bad example if I find one ill comment on this post. its funny how the fear of palindromes (A palindrome is a word that is spelled the same backward as it is forward) is called Aibohphobia and the Stutter has mutiple T's in it...and dyslexia has an I, and an e and a y and overall is just a hard word to spell- OH and Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is one of the longest words in the dictionary ironically its the name for a fear of long words- whos creating these words?? why? must you do that? its funny to me yet ??? I can say this dyeslexia looks different on everyone... I learn

I was diagnosed as a Dyslexic in 2nd grade (8 years old) but here's my answer to the questions: 1. Definitely. I will usually only notice somethings wrong if the context doesn't make sense, but even then I might not realize what just happened after rereading the same sentence a few times. 2. Yep. To fix this I'll use a visual guide. On paper it's my finger, while on the computer I'll manually highlight parts of paragraphs to sort of "narrow it down", if the paragraphs are particularly large, or the font size is too small. 3. I only managed to "fix" my left/right sense in like the middle/end of middle school (13~), and only because I managed to ingrain in my head, "I write with my right hand". On rare occasions, I might still mix the two up. 4. Yep. If you give me a bunch of instructions at once, I'll only really follow the first or last one. If you want to give me a list of things to do, you have to literally send me a list, or my brain gives up. (Was not aware this was related to my dyslexia tho?) 5. Ehhh… I'm not so sure about this one. I've got pretty good diction, I think. My brother (who is also dyslexic) definitely has this issue tho. 6. Used to. Not as big an issue anymore. I've found that a number of the inconveniences of dyslexia can be combated and beaten down thru proper practice and more practice-as long as you actually do so. A relative of mine never got diagnosed as a kid (teachers were worried about other things with him) so now that he's an adult he struggles a lot more with reading and writing. They caught my dyslexia early (helps that I was also considered "the smart kid", so the fact that I had trouble reading stuck out even more-but that "smart kid" label ended up hurting in other ways long-term…) so I got the attention I needed to deal with it, and now I do better than the average person when it comes to things like reading and writing, and am a total bookworm that also likes writing his own fiction. Now if only I had gotten proper attention for my ADD and possibly being on the spectrum… (Mom thought I was a genius, so the teachers suggesting I take special needs classes must have just been out to get me… she regrets it now, but still…) If your kids have learning disabilities and require special needs, PLEASE listen to professionals.

I’m already diagnosed as dyslexic, have been 3 times in my life the first time at 12 was labelled “textbook dyslexia” and the last time at 33 toward the end of the testing the psychologist looked at me and said “I don’t even need to work out what the results mean you’re very obviously clearly dyslexic” I kept saying “yes, next” half way through the questions 😂 already knew the rest of the question because it’s literally the story of my life. The educational system is anti dyslexia - by design. Literally the opposite of all things dyslexia, leading to most school “drop out” millionaires/billionares. All the people who did bad at school but went on to change the world? 99% are dyslexic.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 14 (I’m still 14). I went threw elementary school not being able to read or write (I’m using the microphone on my phone to be able to spell this). It has been really hard to learn how to live with being diagnosed. I have started high school now so it’s going to be a challenge.

I always knew I had dyslexia. When I was in grade school, difficult with letters and writing. B and D. Left and Right. Speech problem with some words. Also, When looking at math problems, Numbers disappearing and popping back up while im solving. writing 12 or 36 wrong. And multiplication was a mind tick on me, I would have the right number in my head, but write something different. Always found it odd, why would I write the wrong number, when I knew the right answer. Example: 6x6=36, but i would write 12. An extreme difficulties is spelling, sounding is not a smooth process. Computers saved me but it's not a 100% fix. I'm highly smart, so I found ways to deal with my difficulties, I hide it well. But the messed up part is is when someone gives me a paper to take notes(writing without a computer is difficult, pen and paper writing not the best). But it's not easy at all, especially trying to move up in your career.

I remember being about 4, a teacher came to my house and she told me the letter 'b' and 'd' were different. Then my parents gave me these kid's books "Sam the Lion". I wouldn't pronounce the words correctly. I am an 'A' student, but I have to erase 2 hours of math homework because I realized I switched the (y,x) as the formula. I work really really hard to preform/ over preform to meet expectations. I keep asking my mom why I haven't been diagnosed. And she knows I have it because I was homeschooled for 3-5 years. My Grandmother is severely dislexic. Still, no diagnosis. It'll flare up at times too, which worries me if I was ever tested. Like, what if that day it was less or not even apparent? I don't think people know how hard it is to achieve the level of academics. There is so little praise. It can be hurtful. Once in public school, I was learning to type with all fingers instead of pecking. The teacher had had my sister before and she can type 103 Words Per Minute. So the teacher assumed I should have that level of 'ability'. When I mad 10 Words Per Minute (the highest at the time) she lectured the class on how important dedication to a subject was, but it felt like she was talking to me, though I had practiced at home instead of drawing-- which is my favorite thing to do in the world. Since then, I have made the grade no questions asked. It just hurts when I try to get a concept and I skip steps like read tbs instead of tsp. Sorry for the rant. I guess I just hope I'm not alone.

i scored 5 out of 6. Since 1998,I suffered a threatening head injury, miraculously survived and since then have ben diagnosis with alexcia which is the root of dyslexia. (Dyslexia times 10) I absolutely LOVE anime but find it difficult to watch some of the greatest ones because they provide only subtitles. It also makes it difficult to talk to people online about anime because most of them practically jump down my throat for watching dubbed anime and claim that I "...am not a true anime fan if I do not watch anime with subtitles..." because of that and other things,I truely wish to become a better and faster reader.

I was finally diagnosed with severe dyslexia ten years ago when I was 50 years old. The tip off came when I mentioned to my shrink that I finally figured out how to spell my brother Brian's name correctly after 45 years of trying. I realized that his names letters rearrange to spell "brain". He is very smart and educated so now I think of his name as being "brain" but I just move the letters around to "Brian". She was stunned that I took 45 years to learn to spell "Brain". I shared that I misspelled my wife Mary's name when we first started dating too. The more I learned about dyslexia the more lots of things in my life made sense- especially my education. When my mom died 20 years ago and we went through all her decades of paperwork, report cards, etc. I found my results score from a standardized test called "the Iowas" given to students around 1969. It said that although I was a 3rd grader I was doing math at a 5th grade level and reading at a 1st grade level. I was one of 6 kids, poor and attended a strict catholic school where grades were not considered important- just discipline and religious faith. So nothing ever came of my odd "Iowa" test score. No one cared or even told me about it. The one year I had trouble with math was 3rd grade. That year all the math problems were embedded in to stories that had to be read and understood- rather than being given just the numbers, etc. I used to have to skip eating lunch so I would have extra time to figure the math stories. When I switched to public school for 6th grade I was surprised to find they thought good grades were important. I was easily the best male student- grade wise- and third best overall in class of about 25- 30. I loved drawing and was the class clown (since the public school teachers couldn't hit us like in catholic school). The teacher took me aside and said she didn't mind my joking around all the time because I was actually funny. Plus I got good grades. But she explained that other kids with lesser grades needed to pay attention to her instead of me and my jokes. She let me work at my own pace and when I was done I could spend the rest of the class each day in the back at a big table and she would give me paper and pencils, etc. to draw, etc. From then on I finished all my assignments by lunch. After doing very well in 7th grade too I was switched to an advanced group that skipped some things, went faster and in some subjects combined 8th and 9th grade together in to one year. I continued doing well EXCEPT for French. I busted my ass but still failed. The teacher was very strict but passed me anyways because she could tell I was trying very hard and I ALMOST passed on my own (63% when 65% was passing). In 9th grade the guidance counselor automatically put me in to French 2. My first day of class there was written on the black board the following: THERE WILL BE NO ENGLISH SPOKEN BY ANYONE IN THIS CLASS!!!. I went to my guidance counselor and demanded to replace French 2 with Studio Art 1. She was aghast and said that advanced students like myself always took 4-5 years of a foreign language to have any chance at getting in to Ivy League type colleges. I told her I was never applying to any schools like that and I was going to major in art if I DID go to college. She said she never heard of anyone majoring in art at college but finally gave in. I ended up taking about every art class I could, finished all required credits a year early, got very good SAT scores and ironically DID end up applying to Cornell (because my high school gave out one full scholarship to Cornell each year and I was in the running to get it). I was accepted at Cornell but edged out of the scholarship by one person. I went to Syracuse University instead. And met my wife there! I was and still am a very slow reader. I always hid that from everyone and never got past page 75 in any of the novels we were assigned. My vocabulary was excellent and I was pretty good at writing essay answers entirely based on what I had heard in class. I'm a born debater- the faculty advisor/ coach of the school debate team was always asking me to join the team after I would have debates in the history, government and economics classes I took with him as teacher. I declined. Since I got good grades and SAT scores no one ever imagined I was a very bad reader. But I was razzed for having the worlds very worse spelling. Teachers would say "why didn't you look the word up if you didn't know it's spelling". The problem was that I didn't even KNOW that I didn't know how to spell things. Because my English SAT score was so high Syracuse U. had me skip freshman English 101 which is ironic since I probably should have been taking remedial English instead of going directly to sophomore level English. A friend from my high school went to Harvard and he told me everyone there (in 1979) had to take a foreign language. But they were given some test first and if you did badly enough the language requirement was dropped. I remember at the time thinking that made no logical sense but now I realize it was to prevent dyslexics from waisting time and energy on something their brains weren't correctly wired for. My entire family were voracious readers. The only thing I read voluntarily was the daily newspaper and a few news magazines. I always feared that being a slow reader meant I was "slow" as in stupid. For some reason those two ideas were closely linked in my mind. When I was finally diagnosed as dyslexic my shrink explained that far from being stupid (as I feared) I was actually even brighter than I or others thought because I had done as well as I had in school, on SAT tests, on IQ tests, etc. while reading very little of what everyone else was reading. When I taught my young daughters to read 20 years ago I finally learned to correctly spell words like to, two, too, where, were, we're, whether, weather, etc. They only took me 35 years which is better than the 45 years "Brian" took me. Now I don't feel embarrassed for my horrific spelling (thanks laptop computer) and instead of reading 1- 2 books each year I listen to 70- 80. But I still prefer nonfiction/ history/ biography to fiction and novels (with the exception of John Le Carre novels of course. I may have a learning disability but I'm not STUPID).

After a lifetime of experience. Most professionals, teachers and the general public think it is a mental illness. This keeps young people from seeking help. Illiterate, slow are examples that push people away. I have talked with teachers who believe it is a low level mental illness. Sadly. Public awareness is the best help. Thanks
