I've been researching flat paddles for two days straight, trying to understand the subtleties and nuances. This video has allowed me to wrap up my search, everything explained perfectly in a few short minutes by someone who really knows the product. Thanks mate! :D PS - I wish OneUp would make a smaller version of their pedal! it'll be perfect for my new road/gravel Surly Cross Check

This is a really clear, easy to understand explanation of flat pedals and how they match up with different riding styles. I normally ride clipped in on my XC bike, but am looking to get some flats for general riding, to practise manuals and wheelies, and this has really helped a lot. I was thinking of getting some One Up composites but am now leaning towards the Shimano XT flats.

This is why I love this channel. Everything is dissected and broken down into the why's and how's. I recently bought some composite pedals because of the crazy hot deal, but as a new rider, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was so locked and had no freedom to shift my foot a bit, whenever I needed to get back to neutral. It all makes sense now. 👌👊

Very helpful thanks. I put T-MACs on my Trek Slash 8 paired w/ RC Powerlines - as locked in as it gets. Pedal power is huge. But I do a lot of general trail riding, relative novice skill set, and the size/thickness points you made are indeed relevant. Pedal strikes and missing skin on shins/calves are par for the course. Going to try thinner flats, and run the T-MACs when I'm doing more legit DH stuff. Appreciate your content and approachable style - strong work!

I've been riding with road clipless for years and now trying to do most of my commute by flat pedals. Actually, I've already had the three main types and tested them for at least 2 years, cause I don't do MTB, just by commuting tests, I can feel the difference but I cannot get that clear pros and cons as on your video. So thanks for the video, it explained everything.

@@AprilRideMTB Indeed. You actually addressed the most important part of different pedals, meaning the difference in concavity and surface shape. Another great video Kyle. Can you comment on threaded spikes vs. machined smooth spikes. I usually buy platform pedals with threaded spikes (grub screws) which seem to bite into the shoe sole and give surprising grip (no complaints). I'm now considering a Spank Oozy pedal that has machined smooth pins (no exposed screw threads). I'm concerned that the smooth pins wont grip nearly as well as the threaded type pins. I cannot find anyone who has compared the two pin styles. Do you have any comments on how the two pins rate on grip (assuming the same shoe like a five-ten sole)?

Thanks a million for the video, I have a Fuji Tahoe Comp small size 17in with 26 in wheels and SLX aluminum cranks, I really need new pedals, I want to go for two last pedals you mentioned, but I don't know the flat one is good choice because of it's thickness according to size of my bike and it's low height. Should I choose the last one (flat and thinner) or it's better for me to stick to the third type? Thanks again.

Super helpful video - thanks! I went back to flats (for increased confidence downhill), but was pedal striking like crazy (even on trails around Boise like Peggy's). It drove me crazy enough that I ended up going back to clipless. Something that helped a lot was switching from eggbeaters to SPD pedals, and backing the tension down to literally as low as it'll go. It has helped, but I still like the idea of flats. I have heard you lose something like 10-20% climbing efficiency using flats - do you know if that's true?
@AprilRideMTB
@AprilRideMTB 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Honestly what i feel the most with climbing in clips vs flats is just the different muscle groups being used. Flats I use my hamstring and butt a lot more and clips feel like more of a calf and quad workout. Its fun to switch back and forth throughout the year :)

I am 65 yo who lives in southwestern Utah. I like to ride 10 to 20 mile blue trails climbing and downhill. I am currently peddling with a pair of BC black platform peddles and Five Ten shoes. From your distribution, I believe that they are Convex they have a slightly thicker spindle. It seems lately that I have been loosing my grip on steep gravel uphills. I also nearly crashed on a blue enduro style trail when I lost traction on both peddles after coming off a drop. Fortunately, I was able to regain control. I was thinking of switching to a platform peddle that I can clip into, to help me stay in my peddles and to use my quads when climbing. Now you have thinking flat profile. I believe that you showed us the Shimano Deore XT. I plan to ride 300 miles during the month of September. I’d like to ride Thunder Mountain near Bryce Canyon. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Cool review, however OneUp pedals are convex, not flat. It’s even stated as such on their site, slight convex shape 12mm center tapering to 8.3 at edges.
@AprilRideMTB
@AprilRideMTB 4 жыл бұрын
#THELEGENDMTB thanks! Yeah I think that the site may be a little misleading. I measured them to be 11ish in the center and 9 on the outsides and since the middle doesn’t really have any pins to raise your shoe up, they ride like more of a flat pedal profile. The plastic one up pedals have a definite convex shape and that’s what I currently have on my dirt jumper

Hey hi, Thank you for explaining the topic. I'm looking for a pair of trekking pedal and the flat profile pedal seems inexistant. Do you have some suggestion? Thank you!!!
