Yugioh has been around for over a decade and has released a ton of cards throughout the years. Some of these cards are great, some not so much and some are right in between. Today’s Episode we are going to talk about some of the many interesting artwork changes that yugioh cards have gone through over the years. The cards in today’s episode typically revolve around cards that were changed due to religious reasons.

Maybe it wasn't on the list cause it's too obvious, but for those who never seen it, the original Spellbinding Circle is a pretty obvious religion symbol change.

You're right Japanese spellbinding circle was a satanic symbol in the Japanese version of the anime until 4kids changed it for English dub in the anime

@@chaosdemonicsoulreaper102 I'm pretty sure the Japanese anime version is a made-up symbol; they wouldn't deliberately censor a Jewish symbol (the manga and OCG version are a hexagram) into a Satanic one. I'm pretty sure the TCG version was designed by Upper Deck, not 4Kids, and that it was changed in the dubbed anime more for consistency than because anyone saw a need for further censorship.

For the Aromages I like another explanation I've seen sometimes. That it's not really a religious thing, but because such small aroma candles are a rather normal household item. Maybe Konami doesn't want children to get the idea to put random candles on fancy sticks. Would also explain why big flaming beasts are fine. At least I rarely have some random ogre or robot lying around at home.

1. You missed the goblin's tongue. I noticed that before the ears. 2. Konami is base in Japan, so I'm assuming that the index is indeed at the end of the book, since they read right to left instead of the left to right most are used to.

Actually, the book in Toon World is intended to be read left to right. As 'Toon World' only appears on one side, and the back end is blank. This is also backed up by Toon World being made by Pegasus, and he is canonically American.

Crime and Punishment weren't actually Kaito's cards. They were placed in their decks by some random villain who, through some nonsense, forced them both to summon each card hoping they'd both destroy each other

Another difference with the fake trap artwork is that his tongue isn’t as long in the TCG version compared to the OCG, another odd change as I wouldn’t think a long tongue would be demonic, just creepy

Well, it's creepy because it's abnormal and demons are given abnormal shapes in art. Edit: though, I do think that having weirdly long tongues is not uncommon for demons (or at least those impish demons as the one in the artwork of Fake Trap).

@@xCorvus7x demons definitely commonly have long tongues, but a lot of monsters in general do, so I just think it’s weird that a common creepy attribute like that is censored since it’s not unique to demons.

@@victor_e_dafeet8218 Maybe; I guess a long tongue is generally simply an inhuman trait, perhaps alluding to some animals, but in the context of this artwork where the creature censored looks clearly demonic, it makes no sense to leave the tongue as is if you remove other demonic traits. The censorship isn't about making the figure not looking like a demon at all but to make it less demonic, and redrawing it with a shorter tongue works to that effect.

Books in Japan are usually reversed from what western books are usually like. So the side of the front cover in western books would be the back cover in Japanese (and some other Asian country’s) books. Hence the Index is shown where it is, at the end of the book. Oddly enough, the Japanese name for the card still translates to Toon Table of Contents despite the picture showing the Index at the end of a Japanese-style book. It’s weird that they didn’t want to edit the word Index in the art, to Table of Contents, despite already changing other words in the art. Maybe because that’s too many words to fit in the space. LOL Also, pretty sure スカ on Fake Trap isn’t meant to be “sucker”, but the word meaning something along the lines of “nonsense”.

if you translate Japanese straight literally, it probably does. Likely the kanji used (as well as what the card does as it protects another trap card) is likely what informs the translation to “sucker”.

@@CrnaStrela actually, it DOES say “sucker”. it is in katakana which helps to pronounce loan words (usually English words) that have no Japanese equivilent, for international usage, or they just thought it sounded funnier that way. スカ is “suka”, which sounds an awful like the word “sucker”, which was likely the intention. So want to try that again?

@@Vanitas42 First of all, it's not kanji; it's katakana. And no one that actually knows the language would use like the katakana for "su+ka" (スカ) to represent "sucker". "Sucker" would be サッカー (sakkaa), so even if you condense it to the two key katakana, it'd be sa+ka, not su+ka.

In Death Note the main character gets called "Kira" because it sounds like the English word for "Killer" so go try this stupid argument somewhere else. "nO oNe wHO KnOws tHe lAnGUaGe wOulD.." Uhh, looks like you got the deal with the appearance of Numbers 13 and 31 in the manga mixed up. Kite had one, but Shark had the other, and both had vary different effects that relied on the other being in your opponent's extra deck and would slowly "kill" both duelists (they were slipped in by a third party). The fact that Kite was the one that set off the effects sits well with him getting the Number that referenced the brother that committed the murder.

Even though this card wasn’t on the list since it’s change was obvious, Monster Reborn’s artwork was changed by removing the Ankh symbol in its original artwork

Two other fun facts about this. 1. There's a retrain called Monster Reborn Reborn that references both the Ankh and rework. 2. In the recent Yugioh Sevens anime, even in the English dub they have returned to the original artowrk, so now kids can see the original Ankh art in something other than lost art..

In the anime exodia Necross is actually a ritual monster. I'm not sure why they changed it would of been more playable

Because it doesn't make sense for ritual requirement. Ritual monsters need to tribute another monster from somewhere, but exodia necross requirement is only having all pieces of exodia in gy, there's no transferance of resources from anywhere. You could argue we should just change the effect of contract to dump those pieces from hand/deck to gy but that would just make them too easy to retrieve for an ftk, besides necross would've need to be level 7 if all exodia pieces are involved. This card is just a massive mess, it better for it to stay this way rather than trying to "fix" it.

My idea for why the candles were censored is that candles are real objects that create fire. Similar to that morphtronic lighter guy, I think Konami didn't want to be associated with a kid setting their cards on fire or something idk.

That makes zero sense. First and foremost the candles are still on fire after being censored, the fire just isn't clear and crisp. Any child that knows what a candle is would be aware that the candles in the card art are on fire. Secondly, despite the fact that flaming warriors and demons aren't real, fire is real, so if your idea were correct then every single depiction of anything being on fire on a card would have to be censored. In most flaming monster art the card looks to be on fire even more so than an art where a couple candles are lit.

I never said it made sense, I just assumed it was the reason. There are a lot of other changes that don't make any sense either.

The Number 31 and Number 13 is a weird one, as they changed the cross... into another cross... It changes it from a more "normal" Latin Roman cross to a Greek cross (Or a kind of cross of Jerusalem...). As for the name change, it makes little sense. Cain both committed a crime by killing his brother Abel, and was punished for it. Abel in the story didn't do anything outside being seen by his brother to be favored more by God than his brother was (which wasn't really true).

The name change makes perfect sense, once the cards stopped being "Cain and Able" their names became irrelevant. The implied connection between the cards was erased when those names were removed, the new names don't have to be related to the original ones at all. As far as the cross thing goes, the point is to change the religious iconography so as to not upset all the sensitive religious people out there, and since there's not enough worshippers of the Greek pantheon to matter to the companies profits, it doesn't matter if they get offended about any cards.

Abel wasn't punished, like what is mentioned in the video (granted, in a questionable tone, like the guy didn't exactly think that was true). Also, the Greek cross is still a Christian symbol. So they literally changed the Christian symbol to another Christian symbol...

The sentence "World War 2 was over a decade ago." is perfectly accurate and in plenty of instances completely valid to say. "Why are there suddenly Nazis everywhere? WW2 hasn't been going on for at least a decade now." The statement isn't incorrect, therefore it is perfectly correct. You can infer all you want, it doesn't make it wrong.

Probably the weirdest case of censorship (or rather, non-censorship) in YGO to me is the German translation of Dark Necrofear. So, I’m pretty sure most of us know how the Des archetype were named that to censor the word death, right? Well, seems Konami isn’t as strict with that in their other overseas divisions, as Dark Necrofear’s German name is Dark Deathfear. And Curse Necrofear is called Cursing Deathfear, so it isn’t like this is some kind of early translation weirdness EDIT: Just checked this because of the manga, since it used this name and I wasn’t sure if this was the proper translation, but Necroface is also called Face of Death in the German translation, in fact, necro, as far as I’m aware, is always translated as death, which is a pretty huge double standard, lol

In Japan, mangas are read from right to left. So it would make sense that the index is actually at one of the first pages since you would finish reading the manga by then. Perhaps the toon book is to be read like a manga?

I think the deal with Bergamot, lies in the lanterns. Most, if not all of those lanterns are paper ones. If memory serves me right, candle-lit paper lanterns are rather important to either Bhuddism, Taoism, or Shiintō beliefs.

something you missed: Fake Trap's Goblin Caligrapher has a long tounge in the OCG and international anime versions, but not in the TCG or VRAINS versions.

Maybe it’s a USA thing but in Europe the “index” is at the start of the book. It makes sense as it tells you how the book is segmented so if you wanna jump to X part you have the information at the start of the book

The text on the scroll of the OCG fake trap is actually the katakana (characters used to write foreign words) not the kanji. The text is read as “Suka” lol

In _Death Note_ the population of the world calls Light "Kira" not because it means something in Japanese, but because it sounds like the English word "Killer." This means there's a fair chance that "Suka" is just meant to mean "Sucker" as in "you've been tricked" rather than having it's actual direct translation.

Not sure if this is why, but the original card art of Toon Table of Contents might sat index because the lefthand side of a book is the *end* of a book in Japan. Obviously, this is a bit of a mixed bag, since the words on the OCG page are still English and are not themselves in right to left columns, but it might just be an error by someone or other and the result came out inconsistent. Just a thought.

About toon table of contents, in some areas of the world (Japan included) that is the end of the book. I guess Konami didn’t want to mirror and redo the text in the western releases.

First off you're the fifteen millionth person to make this exact comment, and secondly it's incorrect. As you can see even in Japan the contents of the table of contents are written in English. That's because Pegasus is the creator of this card, and he is American, meaning not only is the book written in English, it's also read left to right.

The more reason to believe that some censored cards being too expensive is a ridiculous thing. It's ruining the artwork, how's that not a detriment for the cost?

I believe is right the toon table index because is the end of the book because the way read in japan is different and in a country like a america look the begin is really the end , is the reason why so many mangas have a image that say your a read this book wrong
