About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first KZfaq video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

i needed to hear this as a new guitar player, especially as a lefty playing as a right handed person. I often want to play punk/grunge, not realizing that some styles are going to feel more comfortable for me even though I LOVE punk. I don't think I naturally gravitate towards those skills, but then the blues comes naturally. so if anything, I'm very inspired to practice to achieve these different styles.

"Talent" can be having an excellent ear that helps you figure out to play what you hear on your guitar. Or it can be the ability to sit around and practice the same thing over and over again until you can play it perfectly. I have neither. But I still enjoy playing my guitar and writing and recording a song every week. 🙂

Dave Gilmour does not have to play fast to be great. His bend are otherworldly. So true about 'feel' as well guys. Cheers from Oz.

Ive had students who had absolutely no sense of time

But did they eventually develop the timing? Or is timing one of those things that you've either "got it" or you "don't" ?

I had no sense of time in the beginning but with practice you learn that. sounds like your students didnt truly have the desire to practice & learn.

In terms of Talent, I believe that talent is earned, not inherited. What is inherited is genes, I feel that some players will have better gifted arm and hand strength than others. Could be anything form being able to pick up alternate picking quickly to strumming with much better rhythm/groove or developing muscle memory quicker.

I believe that it is not necessary to have a natural talent to play the guitar. I see it as mathematics really... practicing and practicing and practicing and sequencing in time, you can get control of anything... except love 😊
