Joey sukhi Why not? There are many tourists from Asia. I never mind which country people come from. Basically Japanese don't speak English well, but if foreigners ask nicely, they'll help you kindly.

Very easy to get by in Tokyo with limited Japanese. Signs are in Japanese and English, metro maps and prices are shown in English, and announcements (e.g. the next station is X, the doors will open on the left/right side) are in English :)

My first trip to Japan, I knew very little Japanese but I will be going for my 5 time this year and I find that each time I know more and can understand more. It does help to have some knowledge but the Japanese are so friendly and helpful that it really doesn't matter. I have been helped by people who spoke no English and also by people with very good English so there is nothing to be afraid of :-)

i don't speak or understand.. but super easy to get around and get food. Getting around a pocket wifi and google maps are you best friend using the train. and out restaurants in the popular tourist areas have english menus

Good video, thanks for posting this. I think it's common for English speakers to worry about how they will get around or communicate if they don't know any Japanese, but usually signs are in multiple languages and in the big cities it's common for locals to have some English ability. - Andrew

Andrew! Thanks for the comment! Yes, I think the answers could be very different if we asked tourists visiting the more rural parts of Japan.

True, you know outside of Tokyo things would be different and in some of the rural areas where they rarely see tourist it would be far worse but I think they would still make a effort to try and help.

By far the most useful phrase while I was travelling in Japan was "Eigo ga hanasemasu ka." Helped a lot where my Japanese would fall short and I couldn't convey what I wanted to say. It's amazing how many people actually know some form of English and open up a lot when you make some attempt to speak even a little Japanese.

I like how, when asked where they are from, non-Americans answer by naming the country they are from. Americans answer by naming their city and/or state, assuming people will know where it is.

@martinc.720
@martinc.720 7 жыл бұрын
Rick A that's my point. France is a country. People will know for sure. But Americans travel half way across the world amd tell people "I'm from Milwaukee", for example, thinking "Well it is in the US, of course they'll know where it is."
@ricka4678
@ricka4678 7 жыл бұрын
Martin C. Lol yes fair enough, it's a reflex answer because it's one of the first questions Americans get asked all the time from other Americans. When I travel to other foreign countries such as Italy for example, I like to say that I'm from California because 1) I like to distinguish myself from the rest of the US and 2) I'm pretty confident that people in developed countries know where California is, especially if they have a smartphone ;) thanks for chatting

I clicked on that video because i was very curious about that. But then I got disappointed because it was in Tokyo. In big metropolises like tokyo, berlin, moscow etc it´s never a problem to get around with english. It would be much more interesting how it is in the rest of Japan.

Many visitors to Japan are still very much concerned with the major "touristy" cities which is why we wanted to focus on this first. But yes, we would love to expand this question to lesser known areas of Japan as well.

No real need for Japanese language, there are English signs and the locals will love to help you, and the the trains' workers are great and do know basic English. The only place where it's still problematic is when it comes to food, but even then nowadays with the Google Translate app you can translate from pictures or even live so it does help. The first two times I went to Japan were without a smartphone (2011+2012) and I had no problems at all, never got lost, and the locals are so wonderful and so kind and willing to help, huge love for the local Japanese people!

While yes it's easy to get around town and eat with no knowledge of the language, I feel like you're gonna be stuck eating at bigger chain restaurants. I imagine it like if I were to eat only at fast food chains here in the U.S like mcdonalds.

Odigo Japan i moved here recently and i actually learned katakana and hiragana (kanji is going to require some help) so i could at least read some stuff. i also learned numbers, how to order, how to ask for help, and lots of greetings and expressions etc. i dont live near any major city where english can be found so i had to learn a lot stuff quickly once i arrived or else i wouldnt last. the only issue i have sometimes is comprehending because the Japanese tend to speak very quickly, but so far i have been able to survive!

The problem is that when Japanese see a foreign face they freak out, so to relax them you need some form of greeting of the, "Hi, hello, how ya doing?" type.

Wow...I've memorized about 50+ Nihongo ga words so far, I guess I'm ahead of most of these people. Here I though It would eventually be an issue. I know excuse me/I'm sorry, thank you very much, good morning, hi, yes, no, here, where, over there, you're good, I'm not good, park, station, you/are/it's/I'm, I little, small, big, is, Is that so?, you're skilled are you?, American, Japanese, this, that, this is, that is, where is, what is it?, what, it's here for sure, it's over there for sure, i am, etc. (Still learning, and I'm barely learning Hiragana at the moment.)
