Thanks for this tip! The reason why I can't get into drawing is because of that advise. I want to draw stylized but I can't because I have to "learn realism" first which I find boring as hell.

realism is emphasis on details, stylization is emphasis on shape

Realism is emphasis on details, shape and proportions. You don't need to focus on realism before stylisation but if want to be good at it, you need to learn realism a bit

That doesn't make any sense. Both realism and stylized require a deep understanding of both detail and shape. Even when you're doing figure drawing or still-lifes you still wind up stylizing to a certain extent. The idea is to actually capture the essence of the real object and condition your eye to perceive the way light/proportion, shapes etc. play off of each other. You never wind up drawing every leaf on a flower or the individual eyebrow hairs on a human face, even when doing a realistic drawing. That's stylization at the end of the day.

I’d say form and shape are important In both . It’s hard to see the building blocks in realism, but the mastery of shape is in there, compare a funko pop hulk , to the digital file for the avengers movie hulk,

You could also look at it as 2 different boardgames. You have the photoreal art game and the cartoon/stylized art game. You don't have to play the (photoreal art) game to know the rules. The rules being how things work irl. How does light reflect, interact with the skin as an example. Because to some extend artstyles that don't try to imitate real life, still take queues from it. So knowing the rule of the base game is all you really need to know, if you don't intend to play that specific game.

I've always thought and been told that you have to do a lot of realistic modeling to be able to do stylied... I know you have to learn anatomy to better understand proportions and some parts of the body to improve, but from there to make a lot of models... well at least it served me.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. A 2D artist who is very knowledgeable in anatomy said that you should study reality before studying stylized. So I was thinking that I should do that too, but I think it might also be right to say that artists who create stylized characters like you don't have to make real people first. In fact, I listened to a workshop by a 3D artist who is very famous for his stylized character, who made it important to understand and study the real human body. But in my personal experience, I've only studied stylized characters without an understanding of the real human body, and I've made enough money from them and satisfied companies that work with me. I still don't know what's right, to be honest, So maybe I should try both and find a way that works for me.

You don't have to start with realism, you have to start by studying real life.

Who is right: every master in every art form for the last century *or* some KZfaqr? You don't *HAVE* to do anything, but you're definitely going to hinder your growth by skipping the fundamentals.

@@NoTengoIdeaGueyLet's see: I have not practiced drawing folding on suits, but I have an understanding of 6 types of drapery so I can create suit fold, without practicing one. your point being?

@@JungoFunko yes, actually. You're saying "By practicing and mastering the fundamentals you will enable yourself to tackle more complex problems without having to practice them specifically" is this somehow a bad thing?
