Update: We've now taken this exact set up in temperatures as low as 29F degrees!
Keep in mind, there is three of us sharing the bed, which contributes a good amount of warmth, but I really am surprised how great this setup worked out in below freezing weather! We wore our merino base layers and added warm sweaters, sweatpants and beanies.
I think the Yakima Camp Blanket on the floor really helps provide a nice layer of insulation. Also, the mattress pad you choose has the most significant effect on warmth. The Exped MegaMat does a fantastic job, thanks to its foam insulation. For even more comfort and warmth, Exped also has a luxury version of the MegaMat (MegaMat Max 15). For an extra $80 you get a 6 inch mattress versus a 3.9 inch one and an R-Value (which measures the amount of insulation in a pad) of 10.6 versus 8.1. While I haven't tested the luxury version of the MegaMat, I think its safe to say if you don't mind a slightly heavier and larger mat, I would definitely recommend considering it for the extra warmth and comfort!

I know this is a year old, but your right the exped mattress was a game changer for our car camping. Now I do have a very nice down North Face sleeping bag. But have been looking at Pendleton wool blankets. Because, how beautiful they are, but as through out the ages wool is the best. As I’m going to decorate our permanent Airstream (house for a while) with those blankets. Thank you for the advice. It does make your tent look like home.

Wool blankets are amazing. There’s just something about natural materials like wool, canvas, denim and leather. Natural materials seem to break in, rather than break down. They feel warm, breathable and cozy whereas man made materials can seem clamy and I hate the texture and loudness when you move around. I got a nice new Arcteryx shell one time worth over $500 and I returned it because it was too annoying and I went back to a wool jacket.

I bought a queen sized 90x90" Yosemite National Park Blanket on Black Friday for 25% off then I saw one on craigslist for $100, bought that, and then another one on craigslist a Badlands Park blanket for $100 now I have three! You are right about a wool blanket sleep system for camping....one advantage of wool is that it still insulates if wet. I also got the Mon Chateau faux fur blanket from Costco and it's like sleeping with a fur coat over you.

Those enlightened equipment quilts look really nice as well and would be great for their packability! I really like how they let you dial in your bag to suit your needs. Also, I've been meaning to update the description, or do another update for this video because we've taken the three of them out as low as 25degree F and still stayed warm. However, the down quilts are definitly more versatile as they pack up much smaller! Thank you for watching!

The price for Exped stings, yes, but it is worth every penny. It is as comfortable as my home mattress, it doesn’t produce any annoying sound when you move around, it is insulated, you can set the firmness to your liking, it doesn’t loose air even for days, etc. If you are like me who takes their sleep a priority, Exped will make your camping more enjoyable.

Curious if they feel like the old virgin wool army surplus blankets. Super scratchy and sorta stiff. I love merino and of course cashmere. virgin wool is usually stiff thick scratchy to human skin fabric. Are these like that?

Hey, so we’re using an Exped MegaMat Duo LW and it measures 77in by 52in by 3.9in. It’s a very comfortable mattress and it’s easy to adjust the firmness. It has a thick layer of foam that will keep you warm and also absorb roots, rocks, branches under your tent. I’m a back/combo sleeper, my wife’s a side sleeper and we both find the mattress pretty comfortable. If your a strict side sleeper the MegaMat Max 15 would be a better choice with its extra foam. But other than that this mat is honestly the best for a comfortable nights rest out there. At first deflating these mats can feel a bit overwhelming, just watch the exped videos and it will help simplify the process. You basically fold the mat in half and lay down on it to get out the air as opposed to wrestling it. We use a set of Sijo Eucalyptus sheets (queen size) with some queen size Pendleton blankets on top as opposed to sleeping bags and it’s very cozy.

@@rtmadaniThis quilt is perfect for family sleeping. I have a 40 degree for warmer months, a 20 degree for winter months. I like fresh air, so I sleep with windows open. You can still take your wool blanket for a little less warmth. The nice thing about the itasca is that it is baffle box, meaning the seams are not sewn through from back to front leaving cold spot along the seams. Google baffle box quilts.

You might consider checking out places like Costco where you can get a pair of Coleman sleeping bags very cheap and you can zip the two singles together to make a double. In fact you could do that with almost any matching set of sleeping bags if the zippers are the same. Then you can add a few extra blankets or comforters to layer up. Two sleeping bags up together makes about a perfect double…
@rtmadani
@rtmadani 2 жыл бұрын
That definitely should do the trick to make a double! Finding a low temperature rated double bag is pretty hard, but zipping two bags together like you mentioned would definitely simplify the search and allow you to customize your bag! Honestly, we’re really happy with our Pendleton blankets and probably won’t be switching back for our car camping needs. Thank you for sharing the tips!

@@rtmadani Well hopefully somebody that enjoyed your video would like this idea in conjunction with a couple of nice blankets I myself do not buy the really expensive low temperature rated sleeping bags. They cost too much money and can at times be too hot so I would rather take a lightweight sleeping bag put it inside a midweight sleeping bag and if necessary throw a wool and or down blanket on top. I also find a simple dollar store mylar emergency blanket underneath my summer weight air mattress for increased warmth in the winter. Again I layer my sleeping pad I’ll use a piece of tarp or Tyvek under the pad a closed cell foam pad on top of that then I’ll put my light weight air mattress inside my sleeping bag with the mylar reflector underneath it and I’ve camped out in -30° temperatures that’s -30 Celsius

@rtmadani
@rtmadani 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great deal for that temperature rating! What sleeping bag are you using? We didn't dig too deep into sleeping bags, but most of the major brands were pretty expensive for individual bags, some Nemo Bags are even like $500 for 0 degree ratings. I also couldn't find a double sleeping bag with a low enough temperature rating, so that's how we ended up with the Pendleton Blankets. They are definitely expensive and large to pack, but I think they will outlast sleeping bags in terms of wear and tear, which is one of the reasons we decided to give them a try. I'm pretty confident I'll be having these blankets around for a long time, so the cost should turn into savings for not having to replace or repair sleeping bags!

@@rtmadani I have a Marmot bag that I put a Pendleton blanket over when it's chilly. It ups the R value a ton and is very snuggly. As a solo sleeper, I love the Pendleton I bought from the Glacier Natl Park store that's in honor of the Red Buses. It's perfect for one person, much better than a twin as it's a little bigger, sized to fit the bus seats. I also use Pendletons for my dogs (the washable ones, blankets not dogs) and have several queen park blankets. They're expensive at first, but they last forever and look gorgeous. Sleeping bags actually cost as much or more and wear out. Very nice setup and nicely done vid. You have a great eye for quality in many forms.

They come out great, cold water wash, fluff dry (no heat). I have one for each of my two dogs and they love them. I've washed them a dozen or more times each and they start to take on a more uniform texture where the wool fuzzes a little, i.e., the wool threads aren't as obvious and the blanket is softer.
